A Novel Process For Isolation Of Active Components From Terminalia Arjuna Bark

Abstract: Plants and plant derived phytochemicals is widely used for the treatment of human ailments from ancient days on wards. There are many such phytochemicals gaining much importance nowadays. The number of patients suffering from cardio vascular diseases has increased extensively. Long time consumption of synthetic medicines will have adverse toxic effects. Our present invention relates development of phyto chemicals from the bark of Terminalia Arjuna tree, which has got potential health benefits. The novel extraction method allows enrichment of the active components to its highest purity.

1. FIELD OF THE INVENTION

A NOVEL PROCESS FOR ISOLATION OF ACTIVE COMPONENTS FROM TERMINAL!A ARJUNA BARK

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

There are different diseases associated with the heart, generally referred as cardio vascular diseases. Cardio vascular diseases are the leading cause of death all over the world. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a class of disease that involves the heart or blood vessels. Cardiovascular disease includes coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction (commonly known as a heart attack). N There are many synthetic drugs available for the treatment of cardio vascular diseases. But long time consumption of these can lead to many other chronic illness. The trend for nutraceuticals which can cure heart diseases is gaining much importance. But many of them lack clinical evidences. Our present invention relates the development of a phytochemical derived from the bark of Terminalia Arjuna tree. The novel extraction method allows the recovery of active components.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Terminalia active constituents include tannins, triterpenoid saponins (arjunic acid, arjunolic acid, arjungenin, and arjunglycosides), flavonoids (arjunone, arjunolone, luteolin), gallic acid, ellagic acid, oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), phytosterols and minerals. Phytochemical analysis reveals that it contains triterpenes (like arjunic acid ) , arjunolic acid , arjuiiolitin , and arjungenin , tannins like arjunin, catechin, gallocatechin, epicatechin, epigallocatechin , glycosides like arjunglucoside-I-IV arjunetoside , terminolitin deoxyarjunolitin oleane derivatives ) , arjunetoside , arjunaphthanoloside-1 and very high amounts of flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol, luteolin, and pellargonidin), ellagic acids and phytosterols as well as minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, and copper. Termianlia arjuna is a rich source of natural antioxidant Coenzyme Q10. The possible mechanism underlying the medicinal benefits of Terminalia arjuna can be described as Improvement of cardiac muscle function and subsequent improved pumping activity of the heart seems to be the primary benefit of Terminalia. It is thought the saponin glycosides might be responsible for inotropic effects of Terminalia, while the flavonoids and OPCs provide free radical antioxidant activity and vascular strengthening. A dose-dependent decrease in heart rate and blood pressure was noted. The present invention relates the extraction of active components to ensure the pharmacological property of Terminalia Arjuna.
