Abstract: Carbon fibres are materials which have high tensile strength. This material has wide range of applications such as in drones, as construction materials, in robotics, tactical ladders, and sporting goods. Generally this material is prepared from the polymers called Polyacrylonitrile (PAN). In our proposed solution, we are generating carbon fibres from chicken feathers which are free of cost using a process called pyrolysis. In this process we use a specially designed chamber in which the feathers will be heated under controlled conditions at inert gas atmosphere in various stages. During this process the keratin present in the centre part of the feather will be converted into carbon material. During this process, a large amount of heat will be released which can be circulated inside the chamber again through the Rankine cycle. Hence much of the energy required for this process is reduced.
Description:The source of our innovative project is the chicken feather waste, which is off free of cost, but the output is a valuable carbon fiber. This carbon fiber holds many interesting characteristics, some of them are High Stiffness, High Tensile Strength (4000 MegaPascals), Low Weight, High Chemical Resistance, High Temperature Tolerance (Melting point is 3657 0C) and Low Thermal Expansion. Due to the above advantages this fiber is a most required raw material in many manufacturing industries starting from lifesafe helmet, Prosthetic Limb, Carbon Fiber table for CT & MRI scan, Carbon Fiber Implants, Sports Footwear to the large level defence aeroplane. Also the usage of steel in the manufacturing sectors is gradually replaced by this carbon fiber.
The experimental setup consists of chamber, which is maintained at 2800 0C under inert gases such as nitrogen, argon atmosphere. The input undergoes Pyrolysis process inside the chamber. After proper working with exhaust oxygen setup, finally we get a output of carbon fiber and electricity production. This project comes under waste to wealth sector. By this implementation sustainable environment is maintained, irresspctive of chicken feather solid waste.
