The present invention provides a process for the preparation of cis(+/-)-2-[(dimethylamino)-methyl]-l-(3-methoxyphenyl) cyclohexanol hydrochloride using the stable nitrate salt as an intermediate to give a product containing less than 0.2% of the undesired "Trans" diastereomer.
