Optical Fiber Drop Cable

Abstract: The present disclosure provides an optical fiber cable (10), which is a drop cable suitable for both indoor and outdoor application, and is resistant to damage due to harsh environmental conditions and other external conditions. The cable (10) comprises a cable subunit (12) comprising an optical fiber (14), and at least a primary strength member (18) encased in a sheath (16). The subunit (12) is enclosed within an outer jacket (20) comprising at least a secondary strength member (22) embedded within the outer jacket (20). The cable (10) also comprises at least a first layer partially or completely enclosing the sheath (16), whereby the first layer can comprise at least a yarn member (24) or tape (26) located in the space between the sheath (16) and the inner wall out of the outer jacket (18). The cable (10) construction allows for reduced materials cost, imparts high strength for aerial suspension, resistance to slashes/cuts caused due to strings/wires etc. in the external environment, while at the same time providing flexibility and compactness desirable for indoor usage.
