Development Of Innovative Rail Profile (78 Kg/M) By Adopting Modified Roll Pass Design And Selective Rolling Scheme Methodology

Abstract: ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION In current and future rail infrastructure, there are significant requirements for upgrading the track to accommodate heavy axle loads and high-speed fleet. Indian Railways has been gradually increasing the permissible axle loads and working towards improving rail infrastructure in various ways to meet the requirements of heavy freight traffic. In response to these requirements, JSPL has come up with the solution of heavy section rail profile on the reference profile of 60 kg/m rail. This new rail profile increases the allowable limit of wear and decreases outer fibre stresses in the rail foot. The newly developed rail profile increases rigidity and stiffness, allowing rail networks to increase load-bearing capacity and withstand higher rail speeds. The initial designing challenges were to produce such heavy section rail in the existing manufacturing facility. The aim of this research was to develop manufacturing processes capable of producing this innovative rail profile by adopting selective rolling schemes at intermediate stands and finishing stands. JSPL team worked a'n d innovated rail roll pass design and rolling reduction schedule according to the requirement of production of new profile. This innovative heavy section of rail is capable to meet all needs for .rail infrastructure upgrades to accommodate heavy axle loads and high-speed rail transit. The implication of this research is process design of rail manufacturing to invent new rail profile that can extend the life of rail tracks and reduce maintenance costs.

Specification

1. Field of Invention:
The present invention related to production of the unique rail profile by adoption of new roll
pass design. The present invention is directed to designing and developing unique rail profile
to provide significant impact on the overall performance and sustainability of railway
networks.
2. Background of Invention:
Conventional rolling of rails in any rail rolling mill is done by either using tongue and groove
pass design or diagonal rolling method. The most recent process introduces universal rail
design in which all the elements e.g., head, foot and flange are worked upon independently
by rolls. The rails are being rolled using nine passes rolling at roughing stand and five
passes at the intermediate and three passes in tandem mill. Thus, a total of 17 passes are
required to produce the finish rail section from bloom.
Indian Railways has been gradually increasing the permissible axle loads and working
towards improving rail infrastructure in various ways to meet the requirements of heavy
freight traffic. In response to these demands, JSPL develops a special heavy section rail
profile to meet the demand for increased stiffness and to extend the life.span of rail track.
This invention is about significant modification of flat bottom rail section and aims to produce
a unique rail profile by adopting the new process design.
3. Objective of the Invention:
The basic object of the present invention is to produce a unique heavy section through
designing and developing a method for production by utilizing infrastructure in a costeffective
manner. The innovation involves the design and engineering of roll pass designs,
as well. as the machining of roll geometric configuration and modification of straightening
rings to ensure the proper dimensional accuracy and proper straightness in Finished Rails
