Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for producing a target compound, in which method a feed mixture (A) containing at least one starting compound is formed, distributed over parallel reaction tubes (10) of one or more shell-and-tube reactors (100), and subjected to an oxidative catalytic reaction in the reaction tubes (10). According to the invention, water vapour is added to the feed mixture in such an amount that a water vapour proportion of the feed mixture is 5 to 95 vol.%, oxygen in the form of a fluid containing at least 95 vol.% oxygen is added to the feed mixture, and the oxidative catalytic reaction is performed using one or more catalysts containing the metals molybdenum, vanadium, niobium and optionally tellurium. The invention further relates to a corresponding system.
