Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for preparing a positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery, and a positive electrode active material prepared thereby. The preparation method comprises: a first step of preparing lithium transition metal oxide by mixing and sintering a transition metal precursor, comprising 70 mole% or greater of nickel relative to the total number of moles of transition metal, and a lithium raw material; and a second step of washing the lithium transition metal oxide with hot water at higher than 90?. An EELS analysis result with respect to the particle surface of the lithium transition metal oxide after the second step satisfies formula 1.
