Specification

Description:TECHNICAL FIELD
[001] The present invention relates generally to a covering unit for handheld devices.
BACKGROUND
[002] Conventional mobile phone covers are passive accessories to mobile phones. They can have static designs and can offer some measure of protection for the mobile phone. Most families today possess several mobile devices, such as cellular telephones, laptop computers, MP3 players, portable organizers, and the like. In fact, one family often possesses several of a single type of mobile device. For example, each member of a five member family may own a cellular telephone. Typically, these cellular telephones have similar if not identical appearances, which may make it difficult for any one member of the family to quickly identify their personal cellular telephone. As a result, the appearance similarities often lead to confusion. For example, the father may pick up the wrong cellular telephone on his way out the door. Further, a daughter may answer her brother's phone by accident. Protective cases have been introduced to protect such portable electronic devices and have become increasingly popular for protecting electronic devices such as mobile phones, smart phones, and tablet computers.
[003] In addition, the size and shape of modern mobile phones are getting smaller and smaller, and the protective case is becoming smaller. Thus, adding storage space for personal items such as credit cards tends to make the protective case unnecessarily bulky or heavy.
[004] Therefore, there is a need of a system which overcomes the aforementioned problems.

Alternatively, the cover may provide an alternative interface between the display and the communication module. The display may optionally provide itself or the module with information on its capabilities via the standardized display interface.
[0033] In an embodiment, a flexible protective case for covering an electronic device installed therein; A rigid protective frame detachably mounted on a lower surface side of the soft protective case; and a cover. The flexible protective case includes a back panel for covering the back portion of the electronic device. The back panel has an upper surface and a lower surface facing the electronic device. The flexible protective case is provided with a protruded wall formed on the lower surface of the back panel to form the storage space and a protruded wall formed along the edge of the back panel and a sidewall extending from the top surface of the back panel. The flexible protective case substantially covers the rear portion of the electronic device with the upper surface of the back panel and the side surface of the flexible protective case. The rigid protective frame further includes an opening for surrounding the protruding wall of the flexible protective case. The opening is preferably snuggly fitting to the outer surface of the protruding wall of the soft protective case. Items that can be stored in the storage space 60 may include a credit card, a debit card, an identification card (driver's license, membership card, etc.), a business card, a gift card, and the like.
[0034] Figure 2 illustrates a block diagram of a mobile communication device having a communication module and an exchangeable cover interconnected via a standardizes bus.
[0035] In an embodiment, the phone module 22 comprises at least a controller 24 that can (at least partially) control the bus 10 traffic and is further configured to control the radio interface module 28 and the memory 30. The radio interface module 28 is a mobile communication transceiver, a phone engine or a phone modem (or the respective packet radio devices modules (GPRS and the like)) e.g., of the GSM, UMTS or one of the future mobile phone standards. The controller 24 can control the access to the bus and operates with cover-specific software. The present invention does not describe the specific way the cover specific software can be uploaded into the phone module. a controller 15 controlling different modules such as a GPS 14 module, a MP3 player 18 module, a Bluetooth 16 module, a camera module incl. software for handling images, or a Serial I/F-, an USB— (Universal Serial Bus), a Firewire-, Memory card reader and interface module, or an Infrared interface 19 module. These modules are connected via a controller 15 to the bus 10. The modules 14,16,18, 19 can individually be assigned to the cover of the phone module of an additional plug-in or plug-on module may be provided that can deliver a desired functionality. Thus, if one of the additional modules is implemented in the cover of the phone module, the processor 8 or controller 24 can implement the functionality of the controller 15 respectively. Where exactly the dividing line(s) between the cover 2 and the mobile phone module is drawn is not important for the present invention.
[0036] In an embodiment, the additional feature module may be a GPS 14 module, an MP3 player 18 module, a Bluetooth 16 module, or a Serial I/F-, an USB— (Universal Serial Bus), a Firewire- or an Infrared interface 19 module. Therefore, it may be a preferred solution to also provide a power pack module. A power module many also exchange information with at least one of the controllers 8, 15 or 24 to control the actual power consumption in dependence of the power that can actually be provided.
[0037] The manufacturer can provide different communication modules and different cover modules having different abilities and different features. Therefore, it may happen that a cover module and communication module comprise a similar or even an equal implementation of a certain feature.
[0038] Figure 3 illustrates another exemplary embodiment of a mobile device according to the present invention.
[0039] In an embodiment, multiple light sources 134 may be positioned proximate different sections of transmissive cover 132 or proximate different openings 136 of transmissive cover 132 to provide different colors, and therefore different light patterns, to different regions of the transmissive cover 132. Similarly, different colors may be provided to different light guides in soft cover 132. To change the light pattern, the appearance controller controls the light source 134 responsive to user input. The controller may control one or more light sources 134 to create a polka-dot pattern on the mobile device 100. Alternatively, light source 134 may include one or more selectable filters 135 that provide a desired light pattern to the transmissive cover 132. Projector 134 may be any light or image projection device known in the art, such as a liquid crystal projector or a thin film transistor projector. In any event, to provide a desired appearance to the mobile device 100, appearance controller controls projector 134 to project the desired appearance onto the transmissive cover 134.
[0040] Figure 4 illustrates a plan view of a rigid protective frame according to the present invention mounted on a soft protective case.

The side wall of the soft protective case is provided with a plurality of concave surfaces, and the rigid protective frame may have a corresponding structure accommodated in the concave surface. The rigid protective frame and the cover each include two side walls, and the pair of rails and the pair of rail guides may be formed on the two side walls. The two side walls may be inclined in whole or in part. the protruding wall of the soft protective case may be formed to fit the opening of the rigid protective frame. The rigid protective frame and the cover may be formed of polycarbonate. The rigid protective frame 30 is detachably mounted on the lower surface side of the flexible protective case 20 and includes a rail guide portion 70. The cover 40 is formed to fit into the rail guide portion 70 and is slidable on the rail guide portion 70 so that the cover 40 can slide along the rail guide portion 70 to open and close the storage space 60. [ And a rail 80 that is installed to be installed. The rail guide portion 70 may be formed in a vertical direction as shown in, or alternatively may be formed in a horizontal direction. The rail guide portion 70 may be formed of a groove having a concave groove shape or an elongated slit shaped opening. In this embodiment, the rail guide portion 70 is formed as an elongated slit-shaped opening.
[0042] In an embodiment, the rigid protective frame 30 and the flexible protective case 20 in which the rigid protective frame 30 is mounted on the flexible protective case 20, respectively. The rail guide portion 70 is preferably formed on the opposite side wall 31 of the rigid protective frame 30. The number of rails 80 is also two, and the rails 80 are formed on the opposite side walls 41 of the cover 40.
