TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present subject matter relates to a seat assembly and a control system for a seat assembly. More particularly but not exclusively, the present subject matter relates to a seat assembly which can be controlled via a controller to adjust the dimensions of the seat assembly.
BACKGROUND
[0002] Seating assemblies have various different applications such as in a vehicle, theatre, stadium, offices, homes, and other public spaces, and the user of the seat assembly is required to be seated in these seats for various periods of time which sometimes become very uncomfortable for a user of such seat assembly. The seat assemblies are generally made of a fixed seating height from a ground level designed to suit an average user of average height due to which another user of the seating assembly may get uncomfortable due to improper seating height of the seat assembly and due to lack of foam thickness on seats. The user might be of a smaller height or a bigger height due to which the fixed seating height of the seat assembly becomes an impediment causing serious discomfort. In case of vehicle or locomotives or other earth movers or seating for commercial equipment, such discomfort can not only seriously hamper efficiency of the user and machine but also may lead to health issues due to improper posture of the user or in rare cases, accidents due to extreme fatigue of the user. Thus, seating height is an important aspect in various sectors and is required to be adjusted according to the needs of the user in conventional seating assemblies. This problem was being addressed to some extent by known art which used a hydraulic lifting mechanism to control the seating height of the seating assembly. However, this solution required a hydraulic cylinder and valves which were manually operated by the user to control the seating height of the seating assembly. The hydraulic cylinder being disposed vertically or in inclined manner takes up a lot of space and also limits the seating assembly from lowering below the hydraulic cylinder. The hydraulic lifting mechanism had many drawbacks in terms of limited range of low seating height, additional space, leakage of hydraulics, higher maintenance, increased weight, increased cost, and larger number of parts etc. Additionally, the hydraulic lifting mechanism when configured to be attached to a vehicle, consumed a lot of space, which is already a constraint in a vehicle and hence is considered undesirable and unreliable for universal usage.
[0003] Further, known solutions included usage of pneumatic height adjustment system for airbag suspension damping which was provided below the lower frame of the seat. This was being adjusted in order to change the seating height from the ground, the mechanism used an airbag between the upper and lower bracket assembly weldments for adjusting the seating height. However, this solution was too complex, and increased the weight, and overall seating height of the vehicle due to addition of the frame for seating height adjustment. This solution also had low reliability and increased cost due to additional parts. Further this solution only resulted in adjustment of one parameter being height of the seat from ground. Another known solution was usage of airbags in the backrest to adjust the seat according to the shape of the back of the user, which again was only able to adjust the lumbar support and lower back support to be adjustable with the help of airbags in lateral directions. This solution was unable to provide accessibility and was unable to be customised as per the needs of short user as it failed to adjust seating height.
[0004] Further, in conventional seating assemblies of the vehicle only one parameter was able to be adjusted due to which the seating assembly was not able to provide comfort and accessibility at the same time and the user had to compromise. Another known solution was using a separate aftermarket seat cushion for further comfort, this solution was again not viable for users with short height and was unreliable, increased cost, increased number of parts, and is also deemed undesirable due to aesthetics.
[0005] Thus, conventional seating assemblies which are known in the art are complex and economically disadvantageous, uncomfortable for users with short and long heights, not customisable, bulky, able to adjust only one parameter being seat height and are undesirable.
[0006] Hence, there exists a need to develop a seat assembly which is adjustable as per the needs and requirements of the user and overcome all of the abovementioned problems and other problems known in the art.

[0044] The embodiments of the present invention will now be described in detail with reference to an embodiment in a seat assembly along with the accompanying drawings. However, the disclosed invention is not limited to the present embodiments.
[0045] Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of a seating assembly (200) as per one embodiment of the present invention. The present invention has a seat base (201) on which at least one inflatable member (202) has been disposed which is connected to a pressure regulating means (203, 204) via a passage (205) which controls the pressure of the medium flowing inside the at least one inflatable member (202). The medium can be air, liquid, gas or a combination thereof. The pressure regulating means may comprise at least one pumping means (203) and at least one pressure relief valve (204). The at least one pumping means (203) and the pressure relief valve (204) can be used to inflate the inflatable member (202) on directions or command given by the user. The pressure relief valve (204) may be configured to deflate the inflatable member (202) in case the pressure therein rises above the predetermined limit. The inflatable member (202) can be used to adjust the seating position of the user and can be used to alter the comfort of the seat assembly (200) by altering at least one parameter of the inflatable member (202). The at least one parameter of the inflatable member may be height, length, shape, width, pressure, etc. of the at least one inflatable member (202). The seat assembly (200) may comprise a plurality of inflatable member (202) which may be disposed on a top side, a left side, and a right side of the seat base (201). The plurality of inflatable members (202) may be inflated and deflated individually as per the needs and requirements of the user of the seat assembly (200).
[0046] Figure 2 and Figure 3 are taken together for discussion. Figure 2 illustrates a top view of the seat assembly (200), along with a longitudinal plane A-A in middle. Figure 3 illustrates a cut sectional view of the seat assembly (200) across the plane A-A. The seat assembly (200) as shown relates to a seat assembly (200) of a vehicle, however, such configuration is able to be adapted to different kind of seat assemblies and is not limited to a seat assembly (200) of a vehicle. When the seat assembly (200) is configured to be installed on a vehicle, the seat assembly (200) is configured to adjust the at least one parameter of the inflatable member (202) and adjusting the seat assembly (200) as per the comfort and needs of the user of the vehicle. In one embodiment, the parameter to be adjusted can be the height of the seat by adjusting the pressure of the inflatable member (202). Upon inflation of the inflatable member (202), the height of the seat can be raised. It is also possible to configure the inflatable member (202) in such a manner that the inflation may not only alter the seat height but also width of the seat assembly. This can be achieved by placing the inflatable member substantially along a lateral side of the seat base (201). The user can achieve the desired seating position of the vehicle by altering the at least one parameters of the seat assembly (200) of the vehicle. In one embodiment, the seat assembly (200) is provided with a seat cover member to provide cover to the at least one inflatable member (202). The seat base (201) is further divided into two parts namely an upper base (201a) and a lower base (201b). The upper base (201a) being made from a foam type material which provides cushioning to the user of the seat assembly. The lower base (201b) being made of a hard material which helps in providing structural support to the seat assembly. The at least one inflatable member (202) being attached on the seat base (201). In one embodiment, the at least one inflatable member (202) may be disposed directly on the lower base (201b), and in another embodiment, the at least one inflatable member (202) being disposed between the upper base (201a) and the lower base (201b). The present invention further includes a controller (301) which controls the functioning of the one or more pressure regulating means (203, 204) which in turns controls the pressure of the medium inside the at least one inflatable member (202) which results in change in dimensions of the seat assembly (200). The controller (301) is a part of a control system (not shown) being configured to adjust the at least one parameter of the at least one inflatable member (202). The controller (301) is configured to receive an input from the user and based on that input the controller (301) accordingly inflates or deflates the at least one inflatable member (202) using the one or more pressure regulating means (203,204) to change at least one parameter of the at least one inflatable member (202). The at least one parameter of the seating assembly can be the height, width, length, shape, and pressure of the at least one inflatable member (202). The controller (301) controls the one or more pressure regulating means (203, 204) and alters the at least one parameter, and alteration in the at least one parameter of the at least one inflatable member (202) results in change in dimensions of the seating assembly (200). This configuration also enables dampening of the vibrations when the seat assembly is installed in a vehicle or a locomotive or other moving equipment. Further this configuration allows better control of the pressure regulating means and allows the controller to be controlled electronically. In one embodiment, the controller is a smart controller being able to actuate the one or more pressure regulating means (203, 204) on detection of a vehicle operating condition being sensed by a vehicle condition sensor. Due to this control function, the controller is able to sense the vehicle operating conditions like speed, RPM, ignition on/off condition, ambient temperature, etc. of the vehicle, and due to this input, the controller may detect when the vehicle operating conditions, for example if the vehicle is in running condition and the controller may alter the at least one parameter of the seat assembly (200) like height and width of the seat assembly. If the vehicle is in Ignition off condition, then the controller (301) will not allow the pressure regulating means to be operated, in cases of high ambient temperature the controller (301) will limit the pressure inside the at least one inflatable member (202). This above-mentioned configuration is helpful specially for users with short height which have difficulty in placing their feet on the ground. The seat assembly (200) can be adjusted or optimised for accessibility at lower speeds for comfort for long journey and help the user to sit comfortably while riding at higher speeds. The at least one inflatable member (202) will be inflated in this condition when user is riding at high speeds and provide better comfort to the user. The controller may also be configured to deflate the at least one inflatable member (202) at lower speeds on sensing the vehicle operating condition. This deflation of the seat assembly (200) would result in lowering the seating height of the vehicle from the ground and the user with shorter height and new riders also would feel more comfortable while placing their feet on the road at low speeds and increase the confidence of the user. Further, this configuration also increases the safety of the user with short height as they were not able to balance their feet comfortably in conventional seat assemblies.
[0047] The control system (not shown) and the pressure regulating means (203, 204) being integrally attached with the seat base (201). The at least one inflatable member (202) being an airbag having thickness from 0 to 3 millimetres in a fully deflated state and a thickness from 4 to 50 millimetres in a fully inflated state. The at least one inflatable member (202) being configured to increase a height of the seat assembly up to 4 inches when fully inflated by the one or more pressure regulating means (203, 204). The at least one inflatable member (202) may be made from different material which may include silicon, high density polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, low density polyethylene, polypropylene and may also be a combination of these materials. The at least one inflatable member (202) may be made by using similar materials. In an embodiment, the control system controls the entire process of inflating and deflating the at least one inflatable member (202) based on the predetermined range of lower speeds. In another embodiment, the user of the seat assembly is provided control to inflate and deflate the at least one inflatable member (202) as per their riding comfort, and the control is given on an instrument cluster of the vehicle.
[0048] Figure 4 illustrates a rear view of the handle bar assembly (101) as per another embodiment of the present invention. The handle bar assembly (101) as per Figure 4 is shown to be a handle bar assembly of a vehicle and is only an embodiment of a present invention and does not limit the scope of the invention to the seat assembly of a vehicle. An interface (302) such as a switch, touch screen (not shown) etc., may be attached to the handle bar assembly (101) to receive plurality of inputs and/or commands from the user. The interface (302) may be disposed on the steering means (101) in one embodiment for increased comfort of the user and enabling control while riding the vehicle. The interface (302) may be electrically coupled to the controller (301) and the inflatable member (201).
[0049] Figure 5 illustrates a perspective view of a segmented inflatable member (206) as per one embodiment of the present invention. As per one embodiment, a segmented inflatable member is disposed on the lower base (201b) of the seat base (201) directly and is attached fixedly. The said configuration will allow the user of the seat assembly (200) to be able to be seated for longer duration due to increased comfort of the seat assembly (200). The pneumatic seats are more preferable to certain user due to greater comfort while riding. The seat assembly (200) may be configured to be in one or more predefined shapes and sizes. The controller (301) may be configured to adjust the at least one inflatable member (202) in one embodiment where the controller (301) is configured to only adjust a particular area of the segmented inflatable member (206) to conform to the shape as per the input of the user.
[0050] Thus, as per present subject matter the seat assembly (200) is provided comprising a seat base (201) on which at least one inflatable member (202) is being disposed, the at least one inflatable member (202) is configured to support a seating position of a user of the seat assembly. One or more pressure regulating means (203, 204) has been provided to inflate and deflate the at least one inflatable member (202) due to which the dimensions of the seat assembly (200) are altered. A control system has also been provided which controls the one or more pressure regulating means (203, 204) and alters the at least one parameter of the at least one inflatable member (202). The seat assembly (200) can be adjusted by the user using the control system and can adjust the seat assembly (200) as per the comfort and requirements of the user of the seat assembly (200).
