A Battery Cell And A Battery Module

Abstract: A BATTERY CELL AND A BATTERY MODULE A battery cell (101) is elucidated. The battery cell includes an enclosure (1011), a support member (1013) disposed at a substantially central portion of the enclosure and being adapted to support an electrode jelly roll (1012) being windable around the support member. A tubular member (1014) is integrated at a pre-defined portion of the support member and is made of a phase change material. The phase change material is structured to change phase when temperature of the battery cell exceeds a pre-defined temperature. A flame-retardant material (1015) is disposed in a cavity defined in the tubular member and being configured to be discharged into the electrode jelly roll to control thermal propagation when the temperature of the battery exceeds the pre-defined temperature. Fig. 1 is a representative figure.

Specification

1. A battery cell (101) comprising:
an enclosure (1011);
a support member (1013) disposed at a substantially central portion of the enclosure
(1011), the support member (1013) being adapted to support an electrode jelly roll (1012) being
windable around the support member (1013);
a tubular member (1014) integrated at a pre-defined portion of the support member
(1013), wherein the tubular member (1014) is made of a phase change material and is structured
to change phase when temperature of the battery cell (101) exceeds a pre-defined temperature;
and
a flame-retardant material (1015) disposed in a cavity defined in the tubular member
(1014) and being configured to be discharged into the electrode jelly roll (1012) to control
thermal propagation when the temperature of the battery cell (101) exceeds the pre-defined
temperature.
2. The battery cell (101) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the support member (1013) is a mandrel.
3. The battery cell (101) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the phase change material is at least one of
wax, salt hydrates, and paraffin.
4. The battery cell (101) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the flame-retardant material (1015) is
inorganic phosphates including at least one of ammonium phosphate, triphenyl phosphate and
polyphosphate.
5. The battery cell (101) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the support member (1013) and the tubular
member (1014) is a unitary structure.
6. The battery cell (101) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the tubular member (1014) is sandwich at a
pre-defined portion between one or more segments of the support member (1013).
7. The battery cell (101) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pre-defined temperature ranges from
about 45°C to about 60°C.
8. A battery module (100) comprising:

a plurality of battery cells (101) stacked together in a defined orientation, each of the
plurality of battery cells (101) comprises:
an enclosure (1011);
a support member (1013) disposed at a substantially central portion of the
enclosure (1011), the support member (1013) being adapted to support an electrode jelly
roll (1012) being windable around the support member (1013);
a tubular member (1014) integrated at a pre-defined portion of the support
member (1013), wherein the tubular member (1014) is made of a phase change material
and is structured to change phase when temperature of the battery cell (101) exceeds a
pre-defined temperature; and
a flame-retardant material (1015) disposed in a cavity defined in the tubular
member (1014) and being configured to be discharged into the electrode jelly roll (1012)
to control thermal propagation when the temperature of the battery cell (101) exceeds
the pre-defined temperature.
9. The battery module (100) as claimed in claim 8, wherein wherein the phase change material is at
least one of wax, salt hydrates, and paraffin, the flame-retardant material (1015) is at least one
