Abstract: ABSTRACT BANKNOTE HANDLING APPARATUS Provided is a banknote handling apparatus performing a plurality of types of banknote handling processes in which a banknote is transported via different transport routes inside the apparatus. The apparatus includes: a feeding unit configured to feed a banknote to a transport path inside the apparatus; a recognition unit configured to recognize a first orientation of the banknote being transported along the transport path; a storage unit configured to store the banknote having been transported along the transport path such that an orientation of the banknote is aligned to a second orientation; and a control unit configured to determine whether or not the banknote recognized by the recognition unit is to be stored in the storage unit, based on the first orientation, the second orientation, and the type of a banknote handling process being currently performed.
1. A banknote handling apparatus capable of
performing a plurality of types of banknote handling
5 processes in which a banknote is transported via
different transport routes, the banknote handling
apparatus comprising:
a feeding unit configured to feed a banknote
to be subjected to the banknote handling processes, to
10 a transport path inside the banknote handling apparatus;
a recognition unit configured to recognize a
first orientation of the banknote being transported
along the transport path;
a storage unit configured to store therein the
15 banknote having been transported along the transport
path such that an orientation of the banknote is aligned
to a second orientation; and
a control unit configured to determine whether
or not the banknote recognized by the recognition unit
20 is to be stored in the storage unit, based on the first
orientation, the second orientation, and the type of the
banknote handling process being currently performed.
2. The banknote handling apparatus according
25 to claim 1, wherein
the control unit is configured to
determine that the banknote in the first
orientation is storable in the storage unit in a case
where the orientation of the banknote after being stored
30 in the storage unit will become the second orientation
if the banknote is transported to the storage unit via
a transport route corresponding to the type of the

banknote handling process and is stored in the storage
unit, and
determine that the banknote in the first
orientation is not storable in the storage unit in a
5 case where the orientation of the banknote after being
stored in the storage unit will become an orientation
different from the second orientation if the banknote is
transported to the storage unit via the transport route
corresponding to the type of the banknote handling
10 process and is stored in the storage unit.
3. The banknote handling apparatus according
to claim 1 or 2, further comprising
a temporary storage unit configured to
15 temporarily store therein the banknote recognized by the
recognition unit, before the banknote is stored in the
storage unit, wherein
the plurality of types of banknote handling
processes include:
20 a first banknote handling process of storing
the banknote recognized by the recognition unit directly
into the storage unit; and
a second banknote handling process of storing
the banknote into the storage unit after the banknote
25 recognized by the recognition unit has been temporarily
stored in the temporary storage unit and fed out from
the temporary storage unit.
4. The banknote handling apparatus according
30 to claim 3, wherein
the first banknote handling process is a direct
deposit process of feeding a banknote to be deposited,

from the feeding unit to the transport path, and storing
the banknote into the storage unit with the orientation
of the banknote being aligned.
5 5. The banknote handling apparatus according
to claim 3 or 4, wherein
the first banknote handling process is a
replenishment process of feeding a banknote for
replenishment from the feeding unit to the transport
10 path, and storing the banknote into the storage unit
with the orientation of the banknote being aligned.
6. The banknote handling apparatus according
to any one of claims 3 to 5, wherein
15 the second banknote handling process is an
indirect deposit process of feeding a banknote to be
deposited, from the feeding unit to the transport path,
temporarily storing the banknote in the temporary
storage unit, and storing the banknote fed out from the
20 temporary storage unit into the storage unit with the
orientation of the banknote being aligned.
7. The banknote handling apparatus according
to any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein
25 the plurality of types of banknote handling
processes include:
a third banknote handling process in which the
banknote, which has been recognized by the recognition
unit and transported via the transport route
30 corresponding to the banknote handling process, is
stored into the storage unit in the same orientation as
the first orientation; and

a fourth banknote handling process in which
the banknote, which has been recognized by the
recognition unit and transported via the transport route
corresponding to the banknote handling process, is
5 stored into the storage unit in an orientation different
from the first orientation.
8. The banknote handling apparatus according
to any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein
10 the banknote handling apparatus has a
plurality of the storage unit including:
a first storage unit in which the banknote,
which has been recognized by the recognition unit and
transported via the transport route corresponding to the
15 banknote handling process, is stored in the same
orientation as the first orientation; and
a second storage unit in which the banknote,
which has been recognized by the recognition unit and
transported via the transport route corresponding to the
20 banknote handling process, is stored in an orientation
different from the first orientation, and
the control unit is configured to determine
whether or not the banknote is storable, based on whether
the banknote recognized by the recognition unit is to be
25 stored in the first storage unit or the second storage
unit, in addition to the first orientation, the second
orientation, and the type of the banknote handling
process being currently performed.
30 9. The banknote handling apparatus according
to any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein
the control unit is configured to transport a

reject note, which has been determined to be not storable
in the storage unit for a reason that the orientations
of banknotes stored in the storage unit will become nonuniform if the reject note is stored in the storage unit,
5 to a transport destination different from the storage
unit.
10. The banknote handling apparatus according
to any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein
10 the control unit is configured to transport
the reject note, which has been determined to be not
storable in the storage unit for the reason that the
orientations of banknotes stored in the storage unit
will become non-uniform if the reject note is stored in
15 the storage unit, to a transport destination
corresponding to the orientation of the reject note among
a plurality of transport destinations different from the
storage unit
