Dense Photonic Integrated Circuit Optical Edge Coupling

Abstract: An optical interconnect component (8) for use in transmitting light between a photonic integrated circuit (4) and one or more optical fibres (6) attached to an optical fibre connector ferrule (10) is disclosed. The optical interconnect component comprises (8) a step (30) formed at an edge of the optical interconnect component (8), the step including a ledge (32) and a facet (34), one or more optical beam management elements (40) formed in a surface of the optical interconnect component, and a plurality of integrated optical waveguides (36). Each of two or more of the integrated optical waveguides (36) extends from the facet (34) so as to define a plurality of optical ports (38) at the facet (34), and each of the one or more optical beam management elements (40) is aligned with, but separated from, an end of a corresponding one of the plurality of integrated optical waveguides (36). Also disclosed are an optical fibre connector ferrule (10), an optical interconnect assembly (2) comprising the optical interconnect component (8) and the optical fibre connector ferrule (10), and an optical system comprising the optical interconnect assembly (2), a photonic integrated circuit (4), and one or more optical fibres (6).
