Specification

Description:AN A-PILLAR AND SIDE SILL JOINERY STRUCTURE
[0001] The present subject matter, in general, relates to an A-pillar of a vehicle, in particular, the present subject matter relates to an A-pillar and side sill joinery structure.

BACKGROUND
[0002] In existing vehicles in the market, side sill is joined to front door hinge pillar at vertical lower most point of front door hinge pillar. In this type of construction, a joinery area includes four parts (dash side, side sill inner, strength side sill and front pillar). For consistent spot weld quality, 4-ply welding shall be avoided. Hence welding is done between any three parts only at a point in such construction, leading to high spot pitch on load carrying members in general, which is not favourable for crash performance.
[0003] Fig. 1a and 1b illustrate line diagrams 100a and 100b depicting an A-pillar and side sill joinery 102, in accordance with an existing prior art. The line diagrams 100a and 100b depict a dash side 104, a side sill 106, strength side sill 108, and a front hinge pillar 110 in a joinery area.
[0004] Fig. 2 illustrates a line diagram 200 depicting a side view of the A-pillar and side sill joinery 102, in accordance with an existing prior art.
[0005] There is no provision available in the market that decreases the spot pitch in the joinery area in case of three-ply joints.
[0006] Thus, there is a need for a solution to overcome the above-mentioned drawbacks.

OBJECTS OF THE DISCLOSURE
[0007] Some of the objects of the present disclosure, which at least one embodiment herein satisfy, are listed below.
[0008] It is a general or primary object of the present subject matter to improve the crash performance of the vehicle in joinery area of side sill and A-pillar.
[0009] It is another object of the present subject matter to provide a single layered one-piece A-pillar and side sill joinery structure.
[0010] It is another object of the present subject matter to provide the A-pillar and side sill joinery structure allowing a reduction in a spot pitch.
[0011] These and other objects and advantages will become more apparent when reference is made to the following description and accompanying drawings.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0026] The following is a detailed description of embodiments of the disclosure depicted in the accompanying drawings. The embodiments are in such detail as to clearly communicate the disclosure. However, the amount of detail offered is not intended to limit the anticipated variations of embodiments; on the contrary, the intention is to cover all modifications, equivalents, and alternatives falling within the scope of the present disclosure as defined by the appended claims.
[0027] As used in the description herein and throughout the claims that follow, the meaning of “a,” “an,” and “the” includes plural reference unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. Also, as used in the description herein, the meaning of “in” includes “in” and “on” unless the context clearly dictates otherwise.
[0028] Fig. 3 illustrates a line diagram 300 depicting an A-pillar and side sill joinery structure 302, in accordance with an embodiment of the present subject matter. The A-pillar and side sill joinery structure 302 may be present near a front door mounting area in a vehicle. The A-pillar and side sill joinery structure 302 may be a single layered structure casted in one piece and may further be configured to assist in reducing a spot pitch in a joinery area of an A-pillar and a side sill joinery. The A-pillar and side sill joinery structure 302 may be extending in a vehicle longitudinal direction to a side sill for reducing a number of panels at a corner joinery and to improve an overall strength in case of an event of crash or collision. Further, the spot pitch may be reduced based on a decrease in the number of panels at the joinery area.
[0029] Continuing with the above embodiment, the A-pillar and side sill joinery structure 302 may include an A-pillar structure 304, a side sill outer structure 306, a side sill inner structure 308, a dash panel side structure 310, and a strength side sill 312. The A-pillar and side sill joinery structure 302 may further include a number of joinery areas including a first joinery 314 area, and a second joinery 316 area. The first joinery 314 area may be joining the dash panel side structure 310, and the side sill inner structure 308 as one-piece, and the side sill outer structure 306, and the A-pillar structure 304 as the one-piece. To that understanding, the second joinery 316 may be joining the side sill inner structure 308 and the strength side sill 312. The first joinery 314 and the second joinery 316 may be located at opposite ends of the A-pillar and side sill joinery structure 302 so as to keep the A-pillar and side sill joinery structure 302 intact as a single layered structure cast in one-piece.
[0030] Moving forward, the A-pillar structure 304 may include an upper portion 304a and a lower portion 304b. The upper portion 304a may be attached to a vehicle roof, extending towards the strength side sill 312 and the lower portion 304b of the A-pillar structure 304 may be attached on to the strength side sill 312 of the vehicle such that the upper portion 304a runs throughout to the strength side sill 312 and may further provide a resting to a windshield and a mounting to a front door. The side sill outer structure 306 may be laid over the A-pillar structure 304 at the upper portion 304a of the A-pillar structure 304. The side sill outer structure 306 may be extending in a downwards direction. The side sill outer structure 306 may be permanently attached to the A-pillar structure 304 in order to form a single layered structure to reduce the number of panels and the spot pitch.
[0031] Furthermore, the side sill inner structure 308 may include a first end 308a, a second end 308b, and a front end 308c. The second end 308b may be extending away from the first end 308a of the side sill inner structure 308. The dash panel side structure 310 may be laid over the side sill inner structure 308 at the first end 308a and may further be extending in the downwards direction. The dash panel side structure 310 may also be permanently attached to the dash panel side structure 310 in a similar way as the side sill outer structure 306 is permanently attached to the A-pillar for forming the A-pillar and side sill joinery structure 302 as a single layered structure cast in one piece. The number of panels in the present arrangement may be three and may further be assisting in reducing the spot pitch. Forming the A-pillar and side sill joinery structure 302 as a single layered component cast in one-piece may allow the reduction in the spot pitch.
[0032] To that understanding, the side sill outer structure 306 may further include a front portion 306a that may permanently be attached to the lower portion 304b of the A-pillar structure 304. Further, the dash panel side structure 310 may also include a top portion 310a, and a bottom portion 310b that may permanently be attached to the front end 308c of the side sill inner structure 308. In a preferred embodiment of the present subject matter, the first joinery 314 may include the upper portion 304a of the A-pillar, and a top end of the side sill outer structure 306 as the one-piece, the top portion 310a of the dash panel side structure 310, and the first end 308a of the side sill inner structure 308 as the one piece, and the second joinery 316 may include the second end 308b of the side sill inner structure 308, and the strength side sill 312.
[0033] Fig. 4 illustrates a line diagram 400 depicting a side view of the A-pillar and side sill joinery structure 302 implemented in a vehicle door area. The A-pillar and side sill joinery structure 302 may be extending in a vehicle longitudinal direction to a side sill for reducing a number of panels at a corner joinery and to improve an overall strength in case of an event of crash or collision. The number of panels may be reduced from four to three. The spot pitch may be reduced, based on decrease in the number of panels at the joinery area. Further, to strengthen the overall part and to transfer loads more efficiently, with no spots and reduced spot pitch, a reinforcement corner part is in connection with the number of panels. Components of the A-pillar and side sill joinery structure 302 may be altered with different material and thickness combinations with low cost and weight impact due to being small in size.
[0034] While the detailed description describes various embodiments of the invention, other and further embodiments of the invention may be devised without departing from the basic scope thereof. The scope of the invention is determined by the claims that follow. The invention is not limited to the described embodiments, versions, or examples, which are included to enable a person having ordinary skill in the art to make and use the invention when combined with information and knowledge available to the person having ordinary skill in the art.
