Abstract: A method to produce bitumen in a BBU (100) with reduction in viscosity and viscosity ratio during RTFOT is disclosed here. The BBU (100) comprises a Vacuum Distillation Unit (VDU) 102 which is a part of the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) 158, heat exchangers (110 and 112) that are in series with the VDU (102) and the CDU (158). Firstly, vacuum slop (VS) from the VDU (102) is cooled using the heat exchangers (110 and 112), to get a required feed temperature in the BBU (100). Secondly, the VS from the VDU (102) is blended with cold vacuum residue (VR) rundown line to off-site as feed for the BBU, this innovative scheme is executed without shutting down the CDU (158) and the VDU (102). In a third step, a predefined VR: VS ratio is maintained to generate the required bitumen product specification using a ratio controller (160).
