Abstract: Stores are suspended under an aircraft with the help of pylons which act as interface between the aircraft and the external stores. One or more umbilical cables are passed through these pylons for communication between aircraft and stores and meeting power requirements of stores. Through various openings the cables with end connectors reach out and are connected to the stores. When the connectors are not in use, they are required to be secured to restrict the free movement during flight and thus preventing the connector from any damage. The present invention is a connector holder assembly (Figure-1) designed to prevent damage of the end connector by restricting its free movement during a flight. Also, these connector holders are detachable type for easy and quick installation and removal. These can be detached and stored on ground when a store is suspended on pylon under aircraft.
Description:1. Title of the Invention
Holder for securing cable connector in aircraft pylons and racks meant for carrying external stores
2. Field of the Invention
The invention relates to a mechanical holder designed for securing cable connector in suspension equipment (hereafter referred as pylon) such as pylon and racks meant to carry external stores under aircraft wing or inside stores bay. This invention is meant to prevent free movement of the connector during flight, when not in use.
3. Background of the Invention
External stores are suspended under an aircraft or inside stores bay with the help of pylons which act as an interface between the aircraft and the external stores. In order to communicate between aircraft and stores and to meet the power requirements of stores, one or more umbilical cables are passed through these pylons. Through various openings or holes the cable connectors reach out and are connected to the stores. When store is not installed, that is, when connector is not in use, then the connectors are required to be secured to restrict the free movement during flight and thus preventing connector from any damage. The present invention is a connector holder assembly designed to prevent damage of the end connector by restricting the free movement of the connector during flight.
4. Brief Summary of the Invention
In the present invention, a connector holder assembly is designed that comprises of a cover Plate (1), as shown in Figure1, Figure 2 Figure 3 and Figure 4 with Clamp (2) for holding connector, Clip (3) and Lock (5). The end connector is fitted on connector holder assembly after that the connector holder assembly (8) assembled on the pylon structure (9) by pressing and locating the Clip (3) on the Pylon bolt. The lock (5) is also used for fixing the connector holder assembly (8) on the pylon structure (9).
5. Detail Description of the Drawings
The accompanying drawing is included to provide further understanding of the invention, illustrate various embodiments of the invention, and together with the description serve to explain the principles and operation of the invention. In all the drawings each component is identified by a unique numeral. The illustrated embodiment is intended to illustrate, but not to limit the invention.
Figure 1 and Figure 2 are an illustration of “connector holder assembly”. Figure 3 and Figure 4 is an illustration of installation of connector holder assembly on Pylon structure.
Figure 1 and Figure 2 show a Cover plate (1) with a Clamp (2) mounted, a Clip (3) attached to flange (10) with rivets (6), packing (4) installed with rivets (7) at the bottom of clamp (2) & lock (5) to lock the connector holder assembly (8) on Pylon structure (9).
6. Detail Description of the Invention
An umbilical cable is used for providing communication between an aircraft interface adapter and any external payload installed under a pylon structure or a rack of an aircraft. The end connectors of the umbilical cable can freely move inside when not connected with any external payload. So these end connectors need to be protected and secured during flight if they are not in use or kept in stores. During a flight the aircraft structure undergoes huge vibrations, experiencing certain kind of loads, and relative motion between loosely hanging parts. So it is required to protect the hanging end connectors by installing a blanking cover to prevent any possible damage to these end connectors.
For this purpose a detachable type compact connector holder assembly is invented such that during installation it can be easily mounted on and quickly removed from pylon structure without assistance of any loose part. The connector holder is mounted on a blanking cover which is essentially required to cover the pylon or rack openings thus preventing entrance of any foreign bodies as well as to protect the end connectors and internal components from any deliberate damage in flight or when stationed at ground.
In the present invention, a compact Cover plate (1) is proposed with flanges and holes (10) to accommodate for Clamp (2), Clip (3) & lock (5). The cover plate (1) is having bigger holes and two side flange smaller holes to mount lock (5) and clip (3) respectively. The cover plate (1) is designed in such a way that it can withstands the adverse environmental conditions and is given protective surface treatment to overcome such conditions. The Clamp (2) is having rubber lining along the length of part and packing (4) at bottom to provide the cushion for end connector. The rubber lining and packing (4) is fixed by the glue on the clamp (2). The design of clamp (2) is made such that the material used is having elastic properties to grip the connector tightly. The geometrical shape of the clamp (2) can be used in various application. The Clip (3) is made such that it can be pressed easily by hand and also having elliptical holes to locate on pylon special screw. The light weight elastic material is being used to make the Clip (3). The clip (3) and clamp (2) are riveted on Cover Plate (1).
During installation the connector is slid between the metallic leaves of clamp (2) and after that the clip (3) is pressed such that it can be located on pylon special screw. The special screw is mounted on existing bush nut of pylon structure. After that lock (5) will lock the connector holder assembly (8) on Pylon structure (9).
