Thus, a conventional two-piece flip-top closure converts to a single-piece, plug-less flip-top closure assembly for sealing as well as for dispensing the content from the container (85).
DESC:FIELD OF THE INVENTION:
[0001] The present invention generally relates to a closure assembly for containers. Particularly, the present invention relates to a flip-top leakage-proof closure assembly for glass containers. More particularly, the present invention relates to a one-piece, plug-less flip-top leakage-proof closure assembly for containers, like glass containers.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
[0002] Glass bottles are sealed with different types of closure assembly at the top opening of the bottle, to ensure safety of filled contents and to prevent tampering or spillage. These closure assemblies may further include a pour spout for controlled dispensing of filled contents. The different types of closure assembly include cork, screw caps, crown cap, plug, flip-top caps, and swing-top caps. Nevertheless, due to the neck of glass bottles being inconsistent, the contents inside the bottle are prone to leakage.
[0003] Conventional caps are prone to leakages and improper dispense overtime can be messy.
[0004] Further, a conventional two-piece flip top cap requires a plug which is inserted inside the flip top cap for sealing the container for preventing spillages/ leakages as well as for dispensing the content from the containers.
[0005] Non-patent literature titled “Flip top closures: the convenient and sustainable packaging solution for today’s market” by Efficient Innovations discloses parts of a conventional commercial flip-top caps used in a packaging industry.
[0006] WO1997035773A2 discloses a snap-on, twist off container closure assembly which includes a sealing web, sealing plug, sealing wad along with locking elements.
[0007] However, the prior arts lack to provide a simple leakage-proof closure assembly to prevent messy dispensing and leakage and/or spillage of the contents.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION:
[0008] The present invention provides a simple and economical, container closure assembly to ensure safety and prevent leakage (or spillage) of filled product. To achieve so, the present invention discloses an enhanced flip top closure assembly which eradicates the need of the plug and overcomes the aforementioned challenges.
[0009] It is an object of the present invention to replace plug (or conventional plugs) of a container closure assembly with a sealing wad for incorporating the feature of an in-built plug.
[0010] It is an object of the present invention to prevent leakage (or spillage) and provide controlled dispensing of liquid by incorporating a sealing wad.
[0011] It is yet another object of the present invention to provide a one-piece flip-top closure assembly with an inbuilt location for sealing wad, to ease the operation.
[0012] It is yet another object of the present invention to provide a one-piece flip-top closure assembly incorporated with a sealing wad, to tightly seal the inconsistent neck portion of the container and prevent leakage and/or spillage.

[0031] The term “flip-top type closure” and “flip-top type closure assembly” may be interpreted synonymously.
[0032] The term “hollow cavity” and “cavity” may be interpreted synonymously.
[0033] The term “flip-top closure” may be read for “single-piece flip-top closure”, “one-piece flip-top closure” and “single-piece, plug-less flip-top closure” and said terms may be interpreted synonymously and used interchangeably.
[0034] The term “one-piece” and “single piece” may be interpreted synonymously and used interchangeably.
[0035] The present invention provides a simple and economical container closure assembly to ensure safety and prevent leakage and/or spillage of filled product. The said closure assembly provides a one-piece flip-top type closure assembly which prevents leakage and/or spillage and eliminates the use of a conventional plug for the closure assembly.
[0036] As a traditional practice, a plug (as shown in Figure 4a), which is generally an external component to the conventional flip top closure (as shown in Figure 4b), is used to dispense the product from the container (85). The plug is generally inserted into the conventional flip top closure assembly and then the said combined closure assembly (plug with conventional flip top closure assembly as shown in Figure 4b) is fitted onto the neck (80) of the container (85) for avoiding spillages/ leakages and for dispensing the product. Such insertion of plug reduces the diameter of the opening of the spout which in turn reduces the chances of leakages/ spillages from said opening and the same plug is then used to dispense the content from the container. Such plug along with the flip top cap (or the combined closure assembly) constitutes to a conventional two-piece flip top closure assembly (as shown in Figure 4c and as discussed in the background). The present invention, however, eliminates such requirement of plug by introducing a sealing wad in the conventional flip top closure itself. By incorporating such sealing wad, the conventional two-piece flip top closure assembly reduces and/or converts into a single-piece flip top closure for sealing the container (85) and for preventing leakages/ spillages and simultaneously the same flip top closure assembly is leveraged for dispensing the contents from the container (85). Thus, a single-piece, plug-less flip top closure assembly is envisaged in the present invention.
[0037] By reducing the traditional two-piece flip top closure assembly into a single-piece closure assembly in the present invention, the present flip top closure assembly offers elimination of an external plug (as discussed above) and provides a single closure assembly. Also, a user need not insert any external part (like the plug) to the flip top closure assembly which makes a cost effective, easy to operate and an effective solution for the present closure assembly.
[0038] Further, the flip top closure assembly of the present invention offers an-inbuilt plug-like functionality with the help of the existing components viz the sealing wad fitted into a seal collar.
[0039] In an embodiment, a single-piece plug-less flip top closure assembly flip-top closure for a container is provided. The said flip-top closure may comprise of a body, a spout, a lid, a top deck portion, a seal collar and a sealing wad. The body is configured to secure onto a neck of the container and may have a lid. A spout may be formed on the top deck portion and may be configured to dispense contents of the container, wherein the top deck portion may be coupled to the body. A seal collar may be formed below the top deck portion and may be configured to provide a cavity for fitting a sealing wad. The seal collar along with the sealing wad may contact and securely fit inside the inner diameter of the neck of the container thus providing a leak-proof seal between the body and the container. The sealing wad may aid in preventing leakages and/or spillages from the container. Further, the sealing wad is configured to adapt to the inner diameter of the neck of said container such a way that the sealing wad accommodates and seals irregular surface of the inner diameter of the neck of said container. Further, the seal collar formed below the top deck portion along with the sealing wad is configured to provide an in-built plug-like functionality for sealing the inner diameter of the neck of container.
[0040] In an embodiment, the sealing wad may be a ring-shaped structure made from a soft material and which fits in the cavity provided by the seal collar. Further, the sealing wad may be detachably attached or fixed permanently inside said cavity.
[0041] In an embodiment, the irregular surface of the inner diameter of the neck of said container are structural deformities like cracks, uneven surface, crevices, improper concentric shape or any other manufacturing defect in the said neck portion of the container.
[0042] In a further embodiment, the single-piece, plug-less flip top closure assembly flip-top closure may also comprise of a peripheral skirt, a cylindrical rim, a spud and a finger recess area. The peripheral skirt may be on an outer edge of the top deck portion for securing the lid. Specifically, the cylindrical rim present on the periphery of the lid may be secured with the peripheral skirt of the body. Further, a spud may be formed beneath the lid for closing the spout, once the lid is closed. Further, a finger recess area may be formed on the body for flipping the cap or for opening the lid. Further, the lid may be attached to the body of the said flip-top closure via a hinge and the lid may be attached to the body via a hinge.
[0043] In a further embodiment, a method for affixing a single-piece, plug-less flip top closure assembly to a container is disclosed. The method comprises steps of attaching a sealing wad into a cavity formed by a seal collar at a top deck portion of the said flip top closure assembly, mounting the seal collar along with the sealing wad onto a neck portion of the container such a way that the sealing wad accommodates and seals irregular surface of an inner diameter of the neck of said container and rotating said flip top closure assembly for securing said closure assembly onto the neck portion of the container for preventing leakage and/ or spillage and for dispensing contents from the container.
[0044] In an embodiment, the container is any container made from metal, alloy, glass, porcelain, ceramic, clay, terracotta, plastic, etc. and which dispenses liquid content.
[0045] Figure 1A illustrates a single-piece, plug-less flip-top closure assembly (100), according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. Figure 1B illustrates a portion of a container (85) (like glass container) showing the inner diameter (Fd) of the neck (80) of the container (85).
[0046] In a preferred embodiment according to the present invention, the single-piece flip-top closure assembly (100) for a glass container (85) of Figure 1A comprises a body (10), a lid (15), a hinge (20), a top-deck portion (25), a spout (30), a seal collar (35), a sealing wad (40), a finger recess area (45), a peripheral skirt (50), a cylindrical rim (55), a spud (60), an opening (65) and a cavity (70).
[0047] The body (10) may be curved and configured to secure onto a neck (80) of said container (85) (where a portion of the container (85) is shown in Figure 1A for viewing the neck (80)). Further, the top deck portion (25) may be coupled to the body (10) as well as to the lid (15). The top-deck portion (25) may comprise the spout (30). The spout (30) may encircle an opening (65) for dispensing the contents from the container (85). Further, the lid (15) may be attached to the body (10) with the hinge (20) and configured to engage with the top deck portion (25). Further, a spud (60) may be attached beneath the lid (15) and may be caused to enter the spout (30) when the lid (15) is closed.
[0048] In a same preferred embodiment according to the present invention, said closure assembly (100) may comprise a finger recess area (45) on the curved surface of the body (10) for easy flipping of the lid (15). The finger recess area (45) may be a depressed area for keeping a finger of a user for opening or flipping the lid (15). Alternately, the finger recess area (45) may have a plurality of grooves or groove lines for preventing the finger of the user from sliding and for bringing a grip while opening or flipping the lid (15).
[0049] In the same preferred embodiment according to the present invention, said body (10) may comprise a peripheral skirt (50) on the outer edge of the top deck portion (25) to secure the lid (15).
[0050] In the same preferred embodiment according to the present invention, said lid (15) may comprise a cylindrical rim (55) to engage with the peripheral skirt (50) on the body (10), when the lid (15) is closed.
[0051] In the same preferred embodiment according to the present invention, said seal collar (35) with sealing wad (40) may ensure secure sealing to prevent leakage.
[0052] In the same preferred embodiment according to the present invention, the sealing wad (40) may be attached permanently to the cavity (70) by an adhesive for preventing leakages and/ or spillages. In an alternate embodiment, the sealing wad (40) may also be detachably attached to the cavity (70) of the flip-top closure (100). In other words, the existing inserted sealing wad (40) may be removed from the cavity (70) and replaced with another sealing wad.
[0053] In an embodiment, the container (85) may be any container (85) that dispenses liquid. The aforesaid liquid may be any hair care product, body care product, oil, health care product, medicine, water, beverage, etc.
[0054] Figure 2 illustrates a bottom view of the single-piece, plug-less flip-top closure assembly (100), according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention. Particularly, Figure 2 illustrates the bottom view of the single-piece flip-top closure assembly (100) when the lid (15) is closed or when the spud (60) is engaged with the spout (30) of the top-deck portion (25).
[0055] The single-piece flip-top closure assembly (100) may also further comprise a seal collar (35) and a sealing wad (40) as shown in Figure 2. The seal collar (35) may protrude outwards from the bottom portion of the top-deck portion (25) and may have internal threads. The seal collar (35) may have a circular or a ring shape structure. The seal collar (35) may be configured to provide a cavity (70) for fitting a sealing wad (40). The seal collar (35) along with the sealing wad (40) may contact and securely fit inside the inner diameter (Fd) of the neck (80) of said container (85) which provides a leak-proof and/or spill-proof seal between the body (10) and the container (85).
[0056] In the same preferred embodiment according to the present invention, said sealing wad (40) may be a ring-shaped structure to fit within said seal collar (35). For instance, the sealing wad (40) may be a doughnut shaped-concentric ring which may fit within the seal collar (35) and spud (60) as shown in Figure 2, once the lid (15) is closed.
[0057] In the same preferred embodiment according to the present invention, said sealing wad (40) may have different colours and may be made in different sizes and thickness.
[0058] The sealing wad (40) may be made from any material like plastic, silicon, metal, rubber and the like. In the same preferred embodiment of the present invention, the sealing wad (40) may be made from a soft material which adapts to the neck (80) portion due to the unevenness or any other structural deformities (or inconsistencies) present on the container (85), particularly at the neck (80) portion of the container (85). The structural deformities may be uneven surface, cracks, crevices, improper concentric shape of the said neck (80) portion, etc. while manufacturing the container (85). In other words, the sealing wad (40) is configured to adapt to the inner diameter (Fd) of the neck (80) of said container (85) such a way that the sealing wad (40) accommodates and seals irregular surface of the inner diameter (Fd) of the neck (80) of said container (85).
[0059] Such soft material of the sealing wad (40) may be foam, silicone, rubber and the like.
[0060] Other than uneven surface and improper concentric shape of the said neck (80) portion, the other structural deformity or irregularity may be distorted inner diameter’s shape, internal crevices (or cracks), etc.
[0061] Figure 3 illustrates a hollow cavity of the single-piece, plug-less flip-top closure assembly, according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention.
[0062] The bottom side of the top-deck portion (25) shows a seal collar (35) which surrounds the hollow cavity (70). The hollow cavity (70) is highlighted in soft green colour for viewing. The sealing wad (40) is then fixed into the hollow cavity (70) and the seal collar (35) then encircles the sealing wad (40). The seal collar (35) along with the sealing wad (40) is mounted onto a neck (80) portion of the container (85) such a way that the sealing wad (40) seals the neck (80)-portion of the container (85). The bottom side of the top-deck portion (25) mimics like the traditional plug (as discussed in the foregoing paragraphs) as the top-deck portion (25) houses both the sealing wad (40) within the seal collar (35) for fitting onto the neck (80) of the container (85) for avoiding spillages/ leakages. This, in turn, reveals the feature of inbuilt plug-like functionality in the present flip-top closure assembly (as discussed above). In other words, the seal collar (35) formed below the top deck portion (25) along with the sealing wad (40) mimics like an in-built plug for sealing the container (85) as well as for dispensing the content from the container (85).
[0063] The method for affixing the present single-piece flip-top closure (100) is described in the subsequent paragraph.
[0064] The sealing wad (40) may be inserted into the cavity (70) formed by the seal collar (35) such a way that the seal collar (35) of the top-deck portion (25) encompasses the sealing wad (40). Such insertion of the sealing wad (40) into the seal collar (35) reduces the effective diameter (which a conventional plug does) once the closure assembly (100) comes in contact or fitted onto the container (85). The seal collar (35) along with the sealing wad (40) may then be placed or mounted onto a neck (80) portion of the container (85) such a way that the sealing wad (40) seals the neck (80)-portion of the container (85) including that the sealing wad (40) accommodates and seals irregular surface of an inner diameter (Fd) of the neck (80) of said container (85). The single-piece flip-top closure assembly (100) may then be rotated for securing said closure assembly (100) in an inner diameter (Fd) of the neck (80) of said container (85) for providing a leak-proof and/or a spill-proof seal between the body (10) and the container (85) and for dispensing contents from the container (85). For instance, the flip-top closure assembly (100) may be rotated clockwise for sealing the container (85). For accessing the content from the container (85), the single-piece flip-top closure assembly (100) may be rotated anti-clockwise (or counter clockwise) for accessing the content from the container (85) or for opening the container (85). Alternately, the lid (15) of the flip-top closure assembly (100) may be flipped or opened by a user by keeping his/her finger on the finger recess area (45).
[0065] It is understood that the present single-piece flip-top closure assembly (100) makes the container (85) leak-proof as well as spill-proof by arresting the flow of the liquid from the body (10) due to the sealing wad (40) once the flip-top closure assembly (100) is engaged with the container (85).
[0066] Though the present invention envisages a ring-shape structure for a sealing wad (40) and seal collar (35), it is understood that the shape of the sealing wad (40) and seal collar (35) may vary depending on the shape of the neck (80) of the container (85). The aforesaid shapes may be oval, rectangle, square, and the like. Also, the shape of the seal collar (35) and/or hollow cavity (70) may decide the shape of the sealing wad (40).
[0067] Though the present invention relates to the single-piece flip top leakage-proof dispensing closure assembly (100) specially designed for glass containers, the aforesaid closure assembly (100) may also be used in any brittle containers or containers made from materials like porcelain, plastic, ceramic, clay, terracotta and the like for holding liquid matter. Further, the aforesaid closure assembly (100) may also be used for any other container(s) made from any metal (like aluminium, copper and the like) and alloys (like steel, brass and the like).
Advantages:
[0068] The said closure assembly (100) according to the present invention provides a simple, economical, and user-friendly solution, for securing and sealing the contents in a container without leakage and/or spillage.
[0069] The said closure assembly (100) according to the present invention provides a single-piece, plug-less flip-top closure over the conventional two-piece flip top closure assembly which requires an external plug for insertion. In other words, the present closure assembly (100) eliminates the requirement of plug which makes fixing of the said closure assembly (100) easy.
[0070] The said closure assembly (100) is simple, easy to use for sealing the containers and is cost-effective.
[0071] The foregoing descriptions are merely specific embodiments of the present invention, but are not intended to limit the protection scope of the present invention. Any variation or replacement readily figured out by a person skilled in the art within the technical scope disclosed in the present invention shall fall within the protection scope of the present invention. Therefore, the protection scope of the present invention shall be subject to the protection scope of the claims.
