Specification

Description:Field of Invention:
The current invention is in field of Hair Colouring compositions. More particularly, the current invention relates to a single composition self oxidative hair colouring product containing an auto-oxidising molecule without having to mix an oxidant such as hydrogen peroxide as a separate ‘developer’ composition.

Background of Invention:
The natural colour of the hair is due to a pigment called melanin. The colour of the hair is not only determined by the amount of Melanin but also on which type of melanin is higher than the other. Melanin is of 2 kinds Eumelanin which is predominant in black or brunette hair and Pheomelanin which is predominant in blond or red hair.

Hair colouring is an age-old craft that entails treating hair with different chemicals. Plants were the source of dyes in the past. Henna (Lawsonia inermis), indigo dye, Cassia obovata, senna, turmeric, and amla are a few of the most well-known. Leeks, black walnut hulls, red ochre, and katam (Buxus dioica) are some further examples.

The 1860s saw the discovery of para-phenylenediamine (PPD)'s reactivity with air, which led to the invention of artificial hair colours. 1907 saw the invention of the first synthetic hair colour by L’Oreal founder Eugene Schuler. The original "Poly Colour" home colour product was introduced in 1947 by the German cosmetics company Schwarzkopf.

Both synthetic and plant-based dyes are used in the multimillion-dollar hair colouring market today.

Modern day hair colours are typically classified as Natural, Temporary, Semi Permanent, Permanent, and Demi Permanent. Natural hair colours have been used since ancient times to colour the hair. The most common used material for colouring is Henna. Temporary hair colours only coat the cuticle and do not penetrate the hair shaft. These typically last only a single hair wash. Semi-permanent hair dyes are small molecules which are able to penetrate the hair shaft. These last longer than temporary hair dyes but not more than 5-8 washes. On darker hair these semi permanent hair dyes need pre-lightening to make the colour more visible. Permanent Hair Colours which are based on oxidative dyes contain (1) A dye precursor, (2) a coupling agent, (3) an oxidant / developer. Most of the cream/gel based oxidative hair colour products in market today are two composition systems i.e. colorant and a developer which require mixing just prior to application. Demi permanent colours are similar to Permanent colours but with low peroxide and no ammonia.

There are three phases in the oxidation dye mechanism: 1) Oxidation of the quinone state from the 1,4-diaminobenzene derivatives 2) reaction of diimine with a coupler chemical and 3) The final dye is produced by oxidising the resultant chemical. Ammonia/Monoethanolamine is the alkaline chemical that opens the cuticle and allows the hair colour to penetrate the cortex of the hair. It also acts as a catalyst when the permanent hair colour comes together with the peroxide. Peroxide is used as the developer or oxidizing agent. The developer removes pre-existing colour, breaks the chemical bonds in the hair, releasing sulphur. As the melanin is decolorized, a new permanent colour bonds to the hair cortex thereby giving the colour to the hair.

As obvious from the name of this Specification, the objective of this invention is to provide a self oxidative single composition hair colour which requires only one composition and one step to give colour to hair. The main advantage of single step/single composition hair colour is the convenience of use and time required for getting desired result.

One such option has been provided in US10952946 filed in Nov 2019. The disclosure of US ‘946 relates to self-oxidative dye having a structure containing at least three oxidizable groups directly connected to a benzene ring, or benzenetriol, which absorbs oxygen in the air to cause oxidation in order to solve the problem of defective or insufficient dyeing occurring due to shortage of oxygen. The composition of US ‘946 requires a very strong alkaline environment to maintain the stability of the dye.

The US ‘946 claims in a ‘limited’ way the use of self-oxidative dye at 0.5 to 4 wt% along with the use of alkaline buffer (0.5 to 6 wt% of ammonium salts) and antioxidant (0.1 to 1 wt% or less than 3 wt%). It does not claim any specific format and the example described in the prior art is a simple aqueous composition thickened using cellulose & Acrylate copolymer. Also, US ‘946 does not teach the optimal concentration of of auto-oxidising molecule when it has to oxidise the precursors and coupling agents in the composition, more so when these are present along with other ingredients especially surfactants, thickners, emollients etc. The self-oxidative molecule can behave as pro-oxidant or anti-oxidant depending on its concentration and the presence of other ingredeints which can catalyse or inhibit the oxidation chemistry.

Objects of Invention:
Therefore, in view of above it is an objective of current invention to provide a self-oxidative single composition hair colouring product which is safer and effective.

It is yet another object of the invention to provide such composition in a aqueous gel, liquid, cream, shampoo or foam format offering the sensorial benefits and convenience of these formats.

It is yet another object of the invention to provide such composition in a multiuse container that is air-tight or does not suck back air after dispensing the product each time. These air tight multi-use containers could be Pump bottle, diaphragm pump bottle, Bag in valve container, aerosol container, or a tube. When used in these. Conatiners / dispensing devices that do not allow air to get in, this single composition self-oxidative hair colour can be used without the presence of antioxidants.

Summary of Invention:
In view of above object, in main aspect the invention provides self-oxidative single composition hair colour.

Optimal concentration of self-oxidative molecule e.g. 3,4,5-Trihydroxybenzoic acid (gallic acid) leads to the desired shade (intensity and coverage) within an intended duration of treatment. Gallic acid auto oxidises in the presence of air and alkaline pH further enabling oxidation of precursors and couplers (oxidative dyes) present in the composition leading to shade delivery on the hair.

It is known that gallic acid can behave both as an anti-oxidant or pro-oxidant depending on its concentration.

The hair colouring composition of the invention contains judicious amount of surfactant which enhances spreadability and also does not significantly interfere with the oxidation chemistry.

The Hair colouring composition of the invention contains a thickening agent to enable ease of application.

The hair colouring composition of the invention is further fortified with effective amounts of cationic conditioners, silicone conditioning agents, emollients, and humectants which prevent possible hair damage caused by dyeing, thereby making hair smooth and shiny.

The composition of the invention can be dispensed as viscous liquid or gel or cream or shampoo or foam.

Accordingly the invention can be dispensed from a tube, sachet, bottle, Bag in valve device, aerosol can or tube, airless device, Pump bottle etc.

One of the aspects of the invention is that the single composition of self-oxidative dye does not require mixing of dye with hydrogen peroxide (“developer”). That is, the formulation is a single-step single composition hair colouring product.

In one of the aspects the dye composition of the invention gives a long lasting colour.

Detailed Description of the Invention:
The invention will now be described in detail in connection with certain preferred and optional embodiments, so that various aspects thereof may be more fully understood and appreciated. However, any skilled person will appreciate the extent to which such embodiments could be extrapolated in practice.

Unless specified otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art, to which this invention belongs. Although any methods and materials similar or equivalent to those described herein can be used in the practice or testing of the present invention, the preferred methods and materials are described.

Unless stated to the contrary, any of the words “contains”, “containing”, “including,” “includes,” “comprising,” and “comprises” mean “including without limitation” and shall not be construed to limit any general statement that it follows to the specific or similar items or matters immediately following it. Embodiments of the invention are not mutually exclusive but may be implemented in various combinations. The described embodiments of the invention and the disclosed examples are given for the purpose of illustration rather than limitation of the invention.

Further, words like “a”, “an”, “at least” and “the” should be construed to not only cover singular quantities but also plural quantities of the elements immediately following them.

The current invention describes a novel single-step self-oxidative (without the requirement to use hydrogen peroxide) hair colouring composition with no mixing which effectively conditions and moisturises hair and spreads uniformly and quickly. Further, the said composition gives long lasting colour to hair. Whereby, there is no need to mix the dye and developer (hydrogen peroxide) before application of the composition of the invention. It is well known that use of hydrogen peroxide during hair colouring leads to collateral damages.

The hair colouring composition of the invention can be formulated as a viscous liquid, shampoo, cream, gel or foam that can be easily applied to hair, from roots to tips.

More even hair colouring is achieved by the improved spreadability of the hair colouring composition of the invention, which is achieved by the inclusion of the surfactants and the thickener or rheology modifier.

Furthermore, the colouring composition of the invention is enriched by the addition of conditioners, moisturisers, and smoothening agents.

Furthermore, as the oxidant is generated in situ, during the colouring process, interacting with air, which is slower than the fast kinetics of hydrogen peroxide, in forming oxidising species such as, superoxide anion or nascent oxygen or oxidising radical species, the single composition self-oxidative hair colouring composition does not require any mixing prior to application. Also, there is no need to use two different packs as is the case with current oxidative colouring composition and developer composition, and thus this invention saves use of more packaging materials and thus is more environmentally sustainable option.

Furthermore, advantageously, when applied in a shampoo or foam format the composition of the invention does not stain the skin, during the short duration when the hair colour is taken on hand or lathered between the palms before applying onto hair.

Added benefit of single composition of self-oxidative dye is, reduced decolouration of melanin of any non-grey hair, compared to the two compositions where hydrogen peroxide is used in one of the compositions as a Developer. This can be attributed to slow kinetics of oxidising species generated during use and the competition between oxidisation of the dye and decoloration of the hair melanin.

The hair colouring composition in accordance with the above embodiment can be in an aqueous composition (visocus liquid, gel, cream, shampoo, foam)
