Low Cost Polyimide And Composite Polyimide Coatings For Improved Corrosion Resistance And Mechanical Properties

Abstract: ABSTRACT “LOW-COST POLYIMIDE AND COMPOSITE POLYIMIDE COATINGS FOR IMPROVED CORROSION RESISTANCE AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES” The present disclosure provides a low-cost pure polyimide/polyetherimide coating as well as composite polyimide/polyetherimide coating comprising a reinforcing filler selected from 5 polyaniline coated ceria particles, short glass fibers or a combination thereof. The present disclosure provides a coating composition that comprises a polyamic acid that is composed of more cost effective pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) as one of the dianhydride monomers that replaces at least part of 4,4′-(4,4′-Isopropylidenediphenoxy) bis (phthalic anhydride) (BPADA) as a dianhydride monomer and two diamine monomers. The coatings of the present disclosure 10 show corrosion resistance that is similar or improved compared to polyimide/polyetherimide coatings prepared with more costly dianhydride monomer such as BPADA. The present disclosure also provides methods of preparing the coating composition, methods of preparing steel substrates coated with low-cost pure polyimide/polyetherimide coating, and substrates comprising the coatings. 15 Figure 1
