Abstract: The present invention relates to a battery pack (100). The battery pack (100) includes a sealed container (101) having an interior space (S). A plurality of 5 battery cells (120) are disposed inside a first portion (S1) of the interior space (S) and spaced apart from each other. The first portion(S1) being adapted to receive a cooling material (C) encapsulating each of the plurality of battery cells (120). The battery pack (100) includes a battery management system (150) for controlling operation of the plurality of battery 10 cells (120). One of components of the battery management system (150) is disposed in a second portion (S2) of the interior space (S) of the sealed container (101). The second portion (S2) being adapted to receive a filler material (F) being configured to prevent entry of the cooling material (C) inside the second portion (S2).

Specification

[001] The present invention relates to a battery pack and more particularly
to a battery pack having an efficient cooling and thermal management
system which enhances the safety and performance characteristics of the
battery pack.
[007] In an aspect of the present invention, a battery pack is disclosed. The
battery pack includes a sealed container having an interior space. The
battery pack includes a plurality of battery cells disposed inside a first
5 portion of the interior space of the sealed container and spaced apart from
each other. The first portion is adapted to receive a cooling material
encapsulating each of the plurality of battery cells. The battery pack includes
a battery management system for controlling operation of the plurality of
battery cells whereby at least one of components of the battery
10 management system is disposed in a second portion of the interior space of
the sealed container. The second portion is adapted to receive a filler
material and the filler material is configured to prevent entry of the cooling
material inside the second portion.
[008] In an embodiment, the cooling material is a phase change material.
15 The phase change material is configured to absorb and dissipate heat
generated by the plurality of battery cells.
[009] In an embodiment, at least one of components of the battery
management system is a circuit board. The circuit board is disposed
adjacent to one of the plurality of the battery cells.
20 [010] In an embodiment, the at least one of the components of the battery
management system being oriented parallel to a longitudinal axis of one of
the plurality of battery cells.
[011] In an embodiment, the filler material is a lightweight foam.
We Claim:
1. A battery pack (100) comprising:
a sealed container (101) having an interior space (S);
a plurality of battery cells (120) disposed inside a first portion (S1) of
5 the interior space (S) of the sealed container (101) and spaced apart
from each other, the first portion(S1) being adapted to receive a
cooling material (C) encapsulating each of the plurality of battery cells
(120); and
a battery management system (150) for controlling operation of the
10 plurality of battery cells (120) whereby at least one of components of
the battery management system (150) being disposed in a second
portion (S2) of the interior space (S) of the sealed container (101),
the second portion (S2) being adapted to receive a filler material (F)
and the filler material (F) is configured to prevent entry of the cooling
15 material (C) inside the second portion (S2).
2. The battery pack (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the cooling
material (C) being a phase change material, the phase change material
being configured to absorb and dissipate heat generated by the plurality
20 of battery cells (120).

3. The battery pack (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein at least one of
components of the battery management system (150) being a circuit
board (152).
5 4. The battery pack (100) as claimed in claim 3, wherein the circuit board
(152) being disposed adjacent to one of the plurality of the battery cells
(120).
5. The battery pack (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the at least one of
10 the components of the battery management system (150) being oriented
parallel to a longitudinal axis of one of the plurality of battery cells (120).
6. The battery pack (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the filler material
(F) being a lightweight foam
