Specification

DESC:TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present subject matter relates generally to a swing arm for a vehicle, more particularly relates to the swing arm for mounting or connecting components of the vehicle.
BACKGROUND
[0002] Typically, in a vehicle, a swing arm is provided to connect a rear wheel to a frame of the vehicle. Further, the swing arm allows the rear wheel to pivot vertically, and it holds a rear axle firmly while allowing movement of the vehicle and to absorb bumps and suspension loads.
[0003] One of the crucial parameters to assemble the swing arm in the vehicle is stiffness of the swing arm. The stiffness of the swing arm significantly impacts the performance and handling of the vehicle. The stiffness of the swing arm depends on the user and vehicle operability such as lateral stiffness prevents the swing arm to remain resilient against bending or twisting force, this helps in maintaining the stability during cornering. Further, torsional stiffness provides resilient against twisting in longitudinal axis, this type of stiffness maintains alignment between the rear wheel and the frame. Similarly longitudinal, vertical stiffness are crucial for the safety and handling of the saddle type vehicle.
[0004] Therefore, in the saddle type vehicle, adequate stiffness of a swingarm is of utmost importance for better riding performance and stability. Good stiffness accounts for lesser vibrations in the swing arm. One of the known solution to increase the stiffness and rigidity is to manufacture the swing arm using carbon fiber, but this increases the overall cost of the vehicle.
[0005] To achieve higher vertical stiffness, conventional materials such as steel and aluminum are used, resulting in swingarms with a vertical cross-sectional width that is significantly greater than the lateral width. To maintain optimal weight, increasing the vertical width necessitates reducing the lateral width. However, this reduction in lateral width compromises the lateral and torsional stiffness of the swingarm, which may fall short of the required values.
[0006] Further, it becomes a challenge for the OEMs and manufacturers to reduce the weight of the swing arm and simultaneously to provide vertical, lateral, and torsional rigidity. In the conventional swingarm structure, it is difficult to customize the vehicle for the user as per their need of weight to stiffness ratio requirement. In addition, it is also observed that the swing arm is prone to get damaged at the time of accident, which needs to be replaced, and customers have to bear the cost of the swing arm.
[0007] Thus, there exists a need for a swing arm that overcomes the limitations of conventional swing arm.
