Method Of Preparing Graphene Oxide Cathode From Used Li Ion Batteries And Aqueous Zinc Battery Therewith

Abstract: A high performance Graphene oxide (GO) cathode active material, synthesized from spent graphite of End of Life (EoL) lithium ion batteries (LIB) and a method(200) thereof is disclosed. The GO nanosheets has BET specific surface area of 30 m2 g-1 or greater (or) exhibits a broad peaks in XRD at 12.9° corresponding to a lattice spacing of 0.42 nm. An electrode(300) incorporating the GO as cathode active material exhibits high charge capacity of 250 mAh g-1 at a current density of 0.1 A g-1 and 70% capacity retention at the end of 1000 cycle and low charge transfer resistance of 348.5 Ω. An aqueous zinc ion battery (AZIB) (400) having zinc anode (401) and GO blended with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MW-CNT) as the cathode(300) exhibits charge capacity of 250 mAh g-1 at a current density of 0.1 A g-1 and good retention over 1000 cycles.

Specification

Description:METHOD OF PREPARING GRAPHENE OXIDE CATHODE FROM USED LI-ION BATTERIES AND AQUEOUS ZINC BATTERY THEREWITH

CROSS-REFERENCES TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0001] None.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0002] The present invention generally relates to the lithium-ion battery (LIB) recovery technology field. Particularly the cathode material is synthesized from graphite of End-of-life (EoL) LIB. Further, the present invention relates to a method for the preparation of the said cathode material.
BACKGROUND OF THE RELATED ART
[0003] The exponentially increasing production rates of electric vehicles and smart grids have created a waste stream of spent LIBs. The piling up of battery wastes has aroused a research interest in recycling the battery constituents, thereby preventing environmental pollution. LIBs majorly consist of four parts; anode, cathode, electrolyte (lithium salts dissolved in high-purity organic solvents), and separator, with the cathode and anode materials coated on current collectors such as aluminium or copper f , Claims:We claim:
1. A method (100) for extraction of spent graphite (SG) from end-of-life (EoL) lithium ion battery (LIB), the method comprising:
sonicating (102) spent graphite electrode on copper foil of EoL LIB with de-ionized water (DI) water to retrieve SG from the copper foil;
centrifuging (103) SG with N-methyl 2- pyrrolidone (NMP) thrice followed by a single wash with DI to remove the binder impurities; and
heating SG (104) at a rate of 1-20 K/min under an argon atmosphere with temperature ranging from 773 to 1273 K and subjecting (105) to thermal annealing for a total duration of 1 – 12 hours.

2. A method (200) for the preparation of GO from SG of EoL LIB, the method comprising:
providing (201) SG extracted from EoL LIB;
mixing (202) SG with NaNO3 and H2SO4 continuously in an ice bath condition for 2 hours to form the suspension;
adding (203) KMnO4 to the suspension and raising (204) the temperature from 303 to 328 K within 2 hours until the suspension becomes pasty brownish;
adding (205) DI water to th
