Abstract: Provided is an austenitic stainless steel material having excellent strength and excellent hydrogen embrittlement resistance under a high-pressure hydrogen gas environment. The austenitic stainless steel material according to the present disclosure has a chemical composition as described in the description, satisfies the requirements represented by formulae (1), (2) and (3), and has a crystal grain size number of 8.5 or more, wherein, given that the mass percentage of the chemical composition is 100% by mass, the total content of Nb, V, Cr, N and C in a residue obtained by an extraction residue method is 0.090 to 0.425% by mass and the content of Cr is 0.180% by mass or less. (1): 2N+C > 0.40 (2): -7.1+2.7Ni+0.49Cr+2.0Mo-2.0Si+0.75Mn-5.7C-24N = 24.0 (3): Nb+V = 0.15 Herein, to each element symbol in formulae (1) to (3), the content, in % by mass, of a corresponding element in the chemical composition is assigned. When an element is not contained, 0 is assigned to the corresponding element symbol.
