Surface Treated Steel Material

Abstract: This surface-treated steel material includes a steel material and a plating layer formed on at least part of the surface of the steel material. The plating layer is a Zn-based plating layer containing 0.3-12.5 mass% of Mg. One or more compounds from among MgO, Mg(OH)2, MgCO3, Mg4Al2(OH)12CO3?3H2O, Mg6Al2(OH)16CO3?4H2O, Mg-containing Zn6Al2(OH)16CO3?4H2O, 4MgCO3?Mg(OH)2?5H2O, Mg-containing Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6, Mg-containing Zn5(OH)8Cl2?H2O, and Mg-containing NaZn4(SO4)Cl(OH)6?6H2O is present on least part of a non-plated section, where the non-plated section is a portion of the surface of the steel material where the plating layer is not formed.
