The following specification particularly describes and ascertains the nature of this invention and the way it is to be performed.
Field of Invention
[001] The invention relates to joints provided between components of a pneumatic braking system of a commercial vehicle. It more particularly relates to components capable of restricting rotational movement of joints provided in a pneumatic braking system.
Background of the Invention
[002] Commercial vehicles are commonly provided with pneumatic braking system that use pressurised air as a medium to cause application of brakes. Joints provided within such a braking system have to be easy to assemble while also being capable of handling operating loads that will experience during vehicle’s operation. Ordinarily, V-connectors utilised in pneumatic braking systems, that are attached either directly to an air tank or to a Double Check Valve (DCV), are only press fitted at the outlet port of the air tank/DCV to improve the ease of assembly of components within the pneumatic braking system.
[003] Though the press fitted joints allow for ease of assembly, they are not by themselves capable of restricting rotational movement of the V-connectors. As rotation after assembly can cause unwanted twisting and damage components of the pneumatic braking system of the V-connectors, they are normally tied, using ties, to nearest stationery object on the vehicle. This make-shift solution can come undone in time due to normal wear and tear experienced during vehicle operation, thereby leaving the V-connectors and its components vulnerable to damage due to unwanted twisting. Therefore, it is an objective of this invention to provide an inexpensive component capable of restricting rotation of the press-fitted V-connectors, and that can be provided on pre-existing DCV or air tank without necessitating any major changes in the outlet ports.
[004] It is another objective of the present invention to enhance the safety and reliability of the pneumatic braking system by preventing damage to the pneumatic and electrical components on the V-connector.
[005] It is still another objective of the present invention to provide a component that has a longer useful life than ties that are currently in use in its place to perform the same function.
Summary of the Invention
[006] The invention achieving the stated objective, i.e. the rotation inhibitor for restricting rotation of v-connectors provided in pneumatic braking system comprises of a collar, a collar base, hex nut head, and a cap sleeve. The collar of the rotation inhibitor is the topmost portion of said component that has an arc shaped horizontal cross section and a height extending above the collar base. The collar base has a hexagonal opening in its centre forming the hex nut head. The cap sleeve extends from below the collar base and has an internal diameter greater than or equal to the outer diameter of the collar base.
[007] Typically, the rotation inhibitor is fitted on the DCV's projecting outlet port, with the hex nut head interfering with the hexagonal-shaped projection provided on the end of said projecting outlet port.
[008] Typically, the cap sleeve that extends below the collar base interferes with the outer surface of the DCV's projecting outlet port.
[009] Typically, the V-connector has a lower cylindrical portion that is pushed into the central opening of the projecting outlet port of the DCV to press fit it into its position.
[0010] Typically, the two hollow cylindrical arms of the V-connector provided in a V-shaped configuration, receiving the pneumatic and electrical components respectively, have side outer surfaces that that are restricted by the side outer surfaces of the collar of the rotation inhibitor.
Brief Description of Drawings
[0011] The present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings that indicate its various parts and the method of operation of the system. The description of the present invention would, therefore, be better understood with reference to accompanying diagrams, wherein
[0012] Figure 1 discloses the rotation inhibitor in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention as fitted on the DCV.
[0013] Figure 2 discloses a DCV on which the rotation inhibitor is fitted.
[0014] Figure 3 discloses the V-connector that is fitted onto the DCV.
[0015] Figure 4a and 4b disclose isometric views of the rotation inhibitor in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention.
[0016] Figure 5 discloses a cut-section of the rotation inhibitor in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Detailed Description of the Invention
[0017] Referring to the set of figures 4a and 4b, a rotation inhibitor for restricting rotation of v-connectors provided in pneumatic braking system (100) in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the proposed invention comprises of a collar (5), a collar base (10), hex nut head (15) and a cap sleeve (20).
[0018] The collar (5) (refer Figs 4a and 4b) of the rotation inhibitor (100) is the topmost portion of the component that has an arc shaped horizontal cross section and a height extending above the collar base (10). The collar base (10) has a hexagonal opening in its centre forming the hex nut head (15). The cap sleeve (20) extends from below the collar base (10) and has an internal diameter greater than or equal to the outer diameter of the collar base (10) (refer Fig. 5).
[0019] The rotation inhibitor (100) is fitted on the projecting outlet port of the DCV (110) (refer Fig. 2) with the hex nut head (15) interfering with the hexagonal shaped projection provided on the end of said projecting outlet port. The cap sleeve (20) that extends below the collar base (10) interferes with the outer surface of the projecting outlet port of the DCV (110). The V-connector (120) (refer Fig 3) has a lower cylindrical portion that is pushed into the central opening of the projecting outlet port of the DCV (110) to press fit it into its position. The two hollow cylindrical arms of the V-connector (120) provided in a V-shaped configuration, receiving the pneumatic and electrical components respectively, have side outer surfaces that are restricted by the side outer surfaces (5a, 5b) of the collar (5) of the rotation inhibitor (100).
[0020] After the rotation inhibitor (100) is positioned on the projecting outlet port of the DCV (110) and the V-connector (120) press fitted in the central opening of the projecting outlet port (refer Fig. 1), the collar (5) of the rotational inhibitor functions to prevent the V-connector (120) from rotating beyond the limits enforced by the interaction between the side outer surfaces of the V-connector (120) and the side outer surfaces (5a, 5b) of the collar (5) of the rotation inhibitor (100). The rotation inhibitor (100) replaces ties that may otherwise be used to prevent rotation of the rotation of the V-connector (120) on the DCV (110).
[0021] Technical advantages offered by the invention i.e., rotation inhibitor for restricting rotation of v-connectors provided in pneumatic braking system (100), are-
- It is an inexpensive component capable of restricting rotation of the press-fitted V-connectors that can be provided on pre-existing DCV or air tank without necessitating any major changes in the outlet ports.

- It has a longer useful life than ties that are currently in use in its place to perform the same function.
[0022] It is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology employed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation. Therefore, while the present invention has been herein described in terms of its preferred embodiment, those skilled in the art will recognize that the preferred embodiment herein disclosed, can be practiced with modifications within the scope of the invention herein described.
