Description:FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention relates to a convertible audio headset for wired and wireless use that provides an audio solution to a user that allows a user to use the headset in a wired or wireless mode and also provides a means for accommodating a pair of wireless earbud into the headset in view of allowing the user to listen audio independently via the earbuds or by putting the earbuds into the headset.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Listening to audio, such as music, podcasts, or audiobooks, provides entertainment, relaxation, and productivity benefits, whether for personal enjoyment or focus enhancement. The choice between wired and wireless connectivity depends on user preferences and circumstances. Wired connectivity is preferred when stable, uninterrupted sound quality is essential, such as during professional audio editing or high-fidelity listening. Wireless connectivity offers freedom of movement, ideal for activities like exercising, commuting, or casual use where convenience is prioritized. Headphones are more suitable for long-duration listening and scenarios requiring superior sound quality and comfort, such as working from home or gaming. Earbuds are ideal for portability and discreet use, making them perfect for travel, workouts, and on-the-go situations. Choosing between them depends on the need for sound quality, comfort, and convenience.
[0003] Traditionally, people listen to audio using wired headphones or speakers connected to devices like smartphones, MP3 players, or computers through 3.5mm audio jacks or USB ports. This setup provides a stable connection but limits movement due to the physical cables. Transitioning from wired to wireless listening traditionally involves switching from a wired headphone or speaker setup to a Bluetooth-enabled device. This requires users to disconnect the cable, power on Bluetooth headphones or earbuds, and pair them with the audio source. While effective to some extent, these traditional methods have several drawbacks. Transitioning from wired to wireless mode is often cumbersome, requiring users to disconnect cables, power on wireless equipment’s, and pair them, which interrupts the listening experience. Connectivity issues or pairing failures also occur. Noise interference, especially in crowded areas or with poor signal strength, disrupt audio quality, causing interruptions and reducing clarity. Hence, an equipment is needed to be developed that address these drawbacks by providing an efficient option for listening audio in wired or wireless mode by smoothly switching between them.
[0004] US20110111621A1 discloses a headset having an integrated data connector (e.g., a USB female connector). The headset may include an electronic device interfacing portion that may include a USB male connector and a 3.5 mm jack for engaging an electronic device. The headset may also include an acoustic portion that may include at least acoustic element (e.g., speaker) and a USB female connector. To connect the electronic device to a host device (e.g., to transfer music files or recharge the electronic device's battery), the USB connector of the electronic device interfacing portion can engage the host device. To provide audio to a user, the USB connector of the acoustic portion can engage the electronic device interfacing portion, which provides a path from the electronic device to the acoustic element for audio signals. This approach allows a user to use a single cable for connecting the electronic device to both the host device and the acoustic element. Although, US’621 discloses about an invention that relates to a headset having an integrated data connector. However, the cited invention lacks in accommodating a pair of earbuds along with them and fails in providing a 4-in-1 audio listening option to a user.
[0005] US5095382A discloses about a wireless headphone in which an infra-red light signal transmitted from a transmitting apparatus is received and reproduced as an audible sound by a headphone unit portion. A first light receiving element is provided on a top portion of a head band portion of the headphone so that, when a listener wears the wireless headphone, a light receiving surface included in the first light receiving element is directed rearward. Second and third light receiving elements are provided on the pair of headphone unit portions so that, when the listener wears the wireless headphone light receiving surfaces included in the second and third light receiving elements are directed forward. Though, US’382 discloses about an invention that relates to a wireless headphone. However, the cited invention lacks in providing a wired option for listening audio without connecting the headphone to the Bluetooth.
[0006] Conventionally, many headsets have been developed that are capable of providing an audio listening means to a user. However, these headsets are incapable of accommodating a pair of earbuds and fails in providing a 4-in-1 audio listening option to a user by combining wireless earbuds, wired headset, and Bluetooth headset all into one single headset. Additionally, these existing headsets also lack in charging the earbuds and fails in enabling mono and stereo sound mode of the earbuds, based on the number of earbuds in use.
[0007] In order to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks, there exists a need in the art to develop a headset that requires to be capable of providing a 4-in-1 audio listening means to a user by using a wireless earbud, wireless headset, or by connecting the headset with an audio source via a retractable aux cable that is capable of retracting to its original position when the cable is not in use. In addition, the developed headset also needs to be equipped with a means for charging the earbuds during the time for which the buds are docked and requires to amplify the audio from the buds for in view of providing a seamless and adaptable listening experience.

These ear cups 103 are integral part of the body 101 for providing a secure fit over the user’s ears. The design of the ear cups 103 ensures proper placement and alignment for optimal audio delivery. Together, the headband 102 and the ear cups 103 mimic the traditional headphone profile for ensuring user familiarity and providing ergonomic comfort to the user.
[0025] These ear cups 103 are fitted with soft cushioning materials to enhance user comfort during extended use and house audio components capable of delivering high-quality sound. The outer surface of each ear cup 103 is equipped with a hollow socket 201 that is accessed by the user to securely accommodate a pair of earbuds 204 within the socket 201 by using magnets provided within the hollow sockets 201. The magnetic attachment allows the earbuds 204 to be easily docked and held in place, preventing them from slipping or falling out during storage or transport. This design also facilitates effortless detachment when the user wishes to use the earbuds 204 for providing a seamless transition between wired and wireless audio modes.
[0026] The sockets 201 on the ear cups 103 are configured to align with an internal amplification circuitry integrated within each socket 201. This circuitry is responsible for processing audio signals, ensuring optimal sound quality when the earbuds 204 are in use. This circuitry includes components such as operational amplifiers, signal processors, and voltage regulators that works together to boost audio signals to the appropriate level for listening. The circuitry receives audio signals from the earbuds 204 through a set of audio signal transfer pins 203 provided within the sockets 201 and also enables transfer of power from the ear cups 103 to the earbuds 204 through a set of charging pins 202 provided within the sockets 201, for charging the earbuds 204 when they are docked in the socket 201.
[0027] A retractable aux cable 104 is integrated into the right side of the body 101. This cable 104 is designed to be extended when a wired audio connection is required by the user. When needed, the user is required to manually extend the cable 104 by pulling out the cable 104 to the desired length for connecting to an external audio sources, such as smartphones, tablets, or computers. This provides flexibility to the users to switch between wireless and wired modes seamlessly. The cable 104 is designed to be automatically retractable into the body 101 after use.
[0028] Upon connecting the aux cable 104 to the external audio source, the user is required to manually activate the headset by pressing a power switch 205 arranged on left side of the body 101. The power switch 205 functions as the main control for powering the headset on and off. When the user presses the power switch 205, the switch 205 sends a signal to the inbuilt processing unit, which activates the necessary circuits within the headset. The processing unit is programmed to activate and manage operations of the body 101 by controlling transition between either wireless or wired modes. Additionally, the processing unit administers the charging of the earbuds 204 when the battery of the buds is depleted for ensuring that the buds are recharged in order to keep the earbuds 204 ready for use.
[0029] Referring to Figure 3, an internal view of an ear cup 103 associated with the proposed device is illustrated, comprising a pulley mechanism 301 configured within the ear cup 103.
[0030] The extendable aux cable 104 is designed to be automatically retractable into the body 101 using a pulley mechanism 301. The pulley mechanism 301 allows the cable 104 to extend smoothly when needed for wired audio connections and retracts with ease when the cable 104 is no longer required, maintaining a clean and organized appearance. The pulley mechanism 301 used herein consists of a spring-loaded spool, a tension-adjusting spring, and guiding rollers. The aux cable 104 is wound around the spring-loaded spool inside the body 101 of the headset.
[0031] When the cable 104 is pulled outward manually by a user for use, the spring within the spool uncoils, allowing the cable 104 to extend smoothly to the desired length. The tension-adjusting spring ensures controlled movement, preventing abrupt unwinding. When the user releases the cable 104, the spring mechanism recoils for pulling the cable 104 back onto the spool. Guiding rollers align the cable 104 during retraction in order to ensure the cable 104 is stored neatly and without tangles and allowing the body 101 to function both in wireless and wired modes.
[0032] In wireless mode, the processing unit activates a wireless module which includes but not limited to a Bluetooth module, for establishing a wireless connection with the external audio source. In wired mode, the processing unit disables the wireless function and enables the aux cable 104 for a direct audio connection. When activated, the Bluetooth module scans for nearby Bluetooth-enabled audio source and pairs with the selected source through a secure pairing process.
[0033] The module uses radio frequency (RF) signals to transmit audio data wirelessly, converting digital audio signals into sound signals that is played through the earbuds 204. The Bluetooth module also manages data compression and ensures a stable connection for high-quality audio streaming. Once paired, the module maintains a continuous, reliable connection for allowing users to enjoy wireless audio playback.
[0034] The processing unit incorporates an integrated digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The DAC converts incoming digital audio signals from wired/ wirelessly connected audio source, into analog signals that is further processed by the speaker drivers within the earbuds 204. The conversion ensures that the audio is transmitted with optimized sound quality, providing clear and precise sound output.
[0035] Also, the processing unit utilizes digital noise cancellation to reduce unwanted external sounds for enhancing the listening experience. This noise cancellation works by analyzing the incoming audio signal and generating an anti-noise signal that counteracts ambient noise. As a result, the user is able to enjoy a more immersive and high-fidelity audio experience, whether in wired or wireless mode.
[0036] As the audio starts to play, the processing unit activates multiple in-built microphones (ranging from 2 to 4 in numbers) equipped with the body 101 to detect ambient noise in the surroundings. The microphones used herein consist of a diaphragm that vibrates in response to sound waves, which are then converted into electrical signals by a transducer inside the microphone. The processing unit receives these signals, which are used for active noise cancellation (ANC) by generating anti-noise signals to cancel out unwanted background noise for creating a quieter listening environment. This allows users to focus more on their audio content without being disturbed by external sounds.
[0037] Additionally, the body 101 includes passive noise cancellation (PNC) feature that uses the design of the ear cups 103 and padding to physically block out sound for adding another layer of noise reduction. The combination of ANC and PNC ensures that the headset effectively isolates external sounds and delivers an immersive audio experience.
[0038] A pair of control buttons 205 located on right side of the body 101, that allows the user to seamlessly adjust the headset's frequency ranges, including bass, mids, and treble. This feature enables real-time customization of the sound profile, ensuring an optimal audio experience tailored to the user’s preferences and listening.
[0039] The earbuds 204 in the headset are designed to function independently, offering versatile audio usage options. When a single earbud is used, the processing unit directs the buds to operate in mono mode, allowing the user to hear sound from one earbud, which is ideal for situations where awareness of the surrounding environment is necessary or when only one earbud is preferred.
[0040] When both earbuds 204 are used simultaneously, the processing unit directs the buds to provide a stereo surround sound experience, delivering a rich and immersive audio output with full channel separation for an enhanced listening experience. The body 101 is equipped with built-in audio amplification, ensuring that the audio signal is properly boosted and optimized regardless of whether one or both earbuds 204 are in use. This allows seamless transitions between mono and stereo modes while maintaining consistent sound quality.
[0041] At a specific length along the aux cable 104, there is a disconnecting point 107. This point 107 is accessed by the user to detach the cable from that point and connect the cable to the earbuds via a 0.75mm pin configured at the disconnecting point 107, for switching between wired and wireless audio via the earbuds. The 0.75mm pin serves as the interface through which the audio signal and charging are transferred between the headset and the earbuds. The 0.75 mm pin is a small and compact connector that fits into the designated port or socket on the earbuds, to establish a secure and reliable connection for audio signals, ensuring high-quality sound without interruption.
[0042] The body 101 is installed with an internal battery, wherein if the user desire to charge the headset, the user is required to access a charging port 106 incorporated in left side of the body 101 for recharging the internal battery as well as the earbuds 204. This charging port 106 allows for convenient and efficient recharging of both the headset and the detachable earbuds 204 with compatible charging units, such as USB-C or micro-USB cables, provided with the headset. When connected, the charging units supply power to the internal battery and to the earbuds 204, maintaining their charge levels for prolonged and consistent performance.
[0043] The hollow socket 201 within the ear cups 103 of the headset contains two charging pins 202 that align with corresponding pins on the earbuds 204 when they are inserted into the sockets 201. This allows the headset to charge the earbuds 204 along with the internal battery, without the need for separate charging. When the earbuds 204 are docked, the charging pins 202 create an electrical connection for transferring power from the body’s 101 internal battery to the earbuds 204. This allows seamless, uninterrupted operation of the earbuds 204, enabling them to function wirelessly while being recharged.
[0044] While the headset is in use or during the charging of the headset, the processing unit activates a LED (Light Emitting Diode) indicator 206 located on the body 101 to visually show power status of the headset using different colors for easy user recognition. The red LED light signals that the headset has low power, alerting the user to recharge the headset soon. When the headset is fully charged, the LED light turns green, indicating that the battery is at optimal power. During the charging process, the LED light displays blue, showing that the headset is actively charging. This color-coded indicator 206 allows the user to quickly assess the power level and charging status of the headset.
[0045] Further, a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) is integrated within the body 101, which serves as the central hub for connecting and coordinating key components such as the internal battery, which supplies power to the headset, audio drivers, which convert electrical signals into sound for delivering high-quality audio output to the user. The micro-fan cooling unit integrated into the body 101, is controlled by the PCB to regulate temperature and prevent overheating, thus enhancing the headset’s longevity and comfort.
[0046] Additionally, the PCB supports the active frequency modulation (AFM) module, which is responsible for bass boosting and noise cancellation to create an immersive and clear audio experience. Connecting wires routed through the PCB ensure seamless communication between all components, facilitating optimal performance of the headset in both wired and wireless modes.
[0047] A protective cap 207 is attached to the outer surface of the ear cups 103 by means of motorized hinges 208, wherein if the earbuds 204 are not in use and are docked in the socket 201, the processing unit actuates the motorized hinges 208 to cover the hollow socket 201 with the cap 207. The cap 207 serves as a barrier against external elements such as dust, moisture, and debris, for preventing potential damage or contamination of the earbuds 204 and charging pins 202, when the earbuds 204 are not in use.
[0048] The motorized hinge integrates an electric motor with a traditional hinge mechanism to enable controlled, automated rotational movement of the cap 207 around a fixed axis. The hinges 208 comprise of a pair of leaf that are screwed with the surface of the ear cups 103 and the cap 207. The leafs are connected with each other by means of a cylindrical member integrated with a shaft coupled with a DC (Direct Current) motor to provide required movement to the hinge. The rotation of the shaft in clockwise and anti-clockwise direction provides required tilting movement to the hinges 208, that in turn tilt the cap 207 for covering the hollow socket 201 along with the earbuds 204, when the earbuds 204 are not in use.
[0049] A method for operating the headset (as shown in figure 4 and 5) consists of a series of systematic steps, developed to operate the headset effectively, as follows:
A. Attaching earbuds to the body via hollow sockets
The earbuds 204 are securely inserted into the hollow sockets 201 located on the outer surface of the ear cups 103. This enables the audio playback functionality of the headset.
B. Securing earbuds using magnets
Magnets within the ear cups 103 ensure the earbuds 204 remain securely attached, facilitating seamless switching between wired and wireless modes without dislodging during use.
C. Extending the retractable aux cable
The retractable aux cable 104 integrated on the right side of the headset body 101 is extended to establish a wired audio connection when required.
D. Detaching the aux cable
The aux cable 104 is able to be detached from the headset unit for separate use or convenient storage when not in operation.
E. Charging earbuds via the body
When the earbud battery is depleted, inserting the earbuds 204 into the hollow sockets 201 allows the body 101 to charge them via integrated charging pins 202, ensuring they remain operational.
F. Enabling mono or stereo sound
Mono sound is activated when one earbud is in use, while stereo sound is enabled when both earbuds 204 are inserted into the sockets 201, providing adaptable audio output.
G. Controlling audio profile
The frequency of the audio sound is controlled using dedicated control buttons 205 located on the left side of the headset body 101, allowing easy adjustments by the user.
H. Activating noise cancellation
Active and passive noise cancellation features are activated to minimize ambient noise, thereby improving audio clarity during playback.
I. Transmitting audio content
Audio content from an external electronic source is transmitted to the headset body 101, allowing playback through the earbuds 204 for a high-quality listening experience.
[0050] The present invention works best in the following manner, where the body 101 as disclosed in the invention mimics profile of the traditional headphone, constructed with the headband 102 encircled around head and the ear cup 103 provided on free-ends of the headband 102. The ear cups 103 are having the hollow socket 201 on outer surface that is designed to securely accommodate the pair of earbuds 204 using magnets provided within the hollow sockets 201. The internal amplification circuitry integrated within the sockets 201 receive audio signals and charging through the audio signal transfer pins 203 and the set of charging pins 202 provided within the sockets 201. The hollow socket 201 contains two charging pins 202 that connect with corresponding pins on the earbuds 204 when the earbuds 204 are inserted for allowing the body 101 to charge the earbuds 204 during use. The user is able to access the retractable aux cable 104 for wired audio connection. When not in use, the extendable aux cable 104 automatically retracts into the body 101 using the pulley mechanism 301 for ensuring neat storage and allowing the body 101 to function both in wireless and wired modes. Further, the user accesses the power switch 205 to activate and manage operations of the body 101.
