Baffle Plate Based Air Modulator For Odour And Particle Control

Abstract: The present invention provides an air purification device that includes a housing with an inlet and outlet, within which a plurality of charcoal-coated baffle plates are disposed to redirect and agitate entering airflow. The design enhances turbulence and contact time with the adsorptive surfaces and facilitates greater removal of odors, VOCs, aerosols, airborne particles and chemical pollutants. Optional additions are ultraviolet (UV) disinfection and injection of ozone. The system is passive, energy-efficient, and adaptable for continuous operation in commercial, industrial, and public environments with low maintenance needs.

Description:FIELD OF INVENTION
[0001] The present invention relates to a new air modulator system that uses baffle plates coated or embedded with charcoal-based adsorbent materials for effective removal of aerosols, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), odors, and other airborne contaminants. This invention is related to air treatment and purification technology. The invention has wide-ranging applications in commercial, industrial, healthcare, and public settings where long-duration air quality control with minimal maintenance is desired.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters or activated carbon filters are the main methods used by conventional air-filteration systems to control the air quality. Although effective,these require a lot of maintenance and have high running costs in the form of filters that require regular replacement. These systems also have a tendency to develop high airflow resistance, which over time results in increased energy consumption and decreased system efficiency.
[0003] Current technologies are unable to provide long-term Odor,aerosol and particle control with low maintenance burdens, particularly in crowded public venues such as restrooms, hospitals, dining areas, fitness clubs, and manufacturing work areas.
[0004] Therefore, a more effective air modulation and purification system is required to address the aforementioned issues with a passive, modular, and energy-efficient design that is not heavily reliant on consumable HEPA and activated carbon filters, which is present in the current invention .

DEFINITIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS
1. VOC: Volatile Organic Compounds – refers to a group of organic chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature and are commonly found in many products we use daily. These compounds can be emitted from various sources, including building materials, paints, furnishings, and consumer products
2. Baffle Plate: a plate or a series of plates designed to control or redirect the flow of fluids or gases. They work by creating turbulence, changing flow direction, or restricting flow, which can improve mixing, heat transfer, or pressure distribution.
3. Adsorption: This is the process where molecules of a substance (the adsorbate) accumulate on the surface of another substance.
4. Activated Carbon : Is a form of carbon commonly used to filter contaminants from water and air, among many other uses. It is processed to have small, low-volume pores that greatly increase the surface area available for adsorption or chemical reactions.
5. Turbulence: Irregular and unpredictable movements of air or rough air flow patterns.
6. Modular: Separate parts of Units that can be joined or clubbed together.
7. UV Light / UV Irradiation : Refers to the application of ultraviolet (UV) light, typically with wavelengths between 200 and 280 nm known as UVC light,to a substance or area for disinfection, UV-C light damages microbial DNA, leading to inactivation or termination of organic Matter.
8. Ozone Generator : Is a Device or Machine that converts Oxygen in ambient air to Ozone Gas.
9. HEPA : Stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air filter, is a type of pleated mechanical air filter. It is designed to remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles that are 0.3 microns in size, including dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and other harmful particles.
10. Charcoal : Lightweight, black, and porous material primarily composed of carbon. It's produced by heating wood or other organic matter in a low-oxygen environment.
11. Curved Deflector plate : A curved plate used to disrupt laminar flow of air and create toroidal flows which reduces speed and increases the Interaction of Air with Baffle Plate.
OBJECTIVES OF THE INVENTION
[0005] The current invention's main objective is to develop an air purification system that is:
[0006] 1. Low Maintenance: Capable of running for extended periods of time without requiring frequent filter element replacements.
[0007] 2. Cost-effective: employing inexpensive charcoal rather than costly HEPA and activated carbon filters which require frequent replacement.
[0008] 3. Robust and Simple Construction: Invention uses simple baffle plates, which eliminate complicated moving parts along with sturdy construction.
[0009] 4. Energy Efficiency: The current Air Modulator offers consistent performance when compared to HEPA filters where efficiency reduces due blockage of air filters.
[0010] 5. Scalable and Modular: Current Invention is scalable from Tabletop version to Large size depending on the filtration requirement, further it is Modular as UV Light and Ozone can be added to further Improve the performance.
[0011] 6. Eco-friendly: Current Invention does not require Frequent replacement of HEPA and activated carbon filter and hence is Eco- Friendly.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

In one aspect the invention provides an air modulator device that deflects and disrupts the flow of incoming air by using a number of baffle plates placed inside a housing. Charcoal-based materials that adsorb odors, volatile organic compounds, and airborne chemical pollutants are applied to or embedded in these baffle plates. The turbulence and direction changes created by the airflow's path significantly lengthen the air's residence time in the system and increase its contact with the adsorbent surfaces.

In another aspect this configuration eliminates the need for disposable filters by enabling the mechanical collision of air molecules and adsorption of gas-phase pollutants. In the other aspects the present invention provides Modularity to add ultraviolet (UV) irradiation or ozone injection for microbial sterilization.
EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION
[0014] In one embodiment, the Basic Version of Air Modulator is used ensuring the air quality in small, enclosed spaces like offices or homes is vital for health and comfort. A compact air modulator can be an effective solution for maintaining a clean and healthy environment, especially when dealing with closed air ventilation systems. Air modulators can efficiently remove pollutants,VOC, allergens, and odors from the air by absorbing them in charcoal Baffle plates. This is particularly important in small, enclosed environments where air circulation is limited.This Air Modulator is designed to consume minimal electricity, making it cost-effective for continuous use. Further there is no need for regular replacement of HEPA and activated carbon filters. This is more cost effective and beneficial for the environment.
[0015] In the second embodiment of the present invention works with the additional feature of UV Light added to the basic version of Air Modulator. This UV Irradiation helps in destroying Bacteria, virus and other allergens which can cause harmful allergies and diseases.This ensure best benefits of basic version along with addition of UV Irradiation.
[0016] In the Third embodiment of the present invention an addition of Ozone generator is added. This version of the Air modulator is perfect for public lobbies of Hotels, hospitals and public restrooms which are ventilated and air filtration load is very high.In such locations conventional air filters will get choked quickly with the volume and amount of contaminants in the air. However in the case of our invention baffle plate design will provide a solution that will provide effective air quality and filtration without getting choked or clogged. Further the addition of Ozone Generation will help in eliminating Bacteria, Virus and other Organic contaminants generated in public lobbies of Hotels, hospitals and public restrooms.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0017] The present invention provides an air purification system specifically designed to remove odors, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), aerosols and particulate matter from indoor air by utilizing a baffle plate assembly integrated with charcoal-based adsorption surfaces. As shown in Fig 1 which illustrates one of possible embodiments of the invention, the system comprises Housing /Enclosure 1 an enclosed chamber or duct section through which the contaminated air flows. The housing is constructed of corrosion-resistant materials suitable for prolonged exposure to varying humidity and pollutant concentrations. The Housing 1 has a provision to securely mount by means of bolts, screw rivets or any other suitable means a Pre-filter inlet grill 2, the function of grill is to stop large size particles and contaminants from entering the air filter like hair,debris and even small insects like mosquitoes etc. This pre-filter grill 2 can be easily removed and can be washed or vacuumed and does not require regular or cyclic replacement the prefilter Inlet grill 2 is can be made from ABS plastic, Stainless steel or any other suitable inert,non corrosive and non toxic material. The Housing 1 also has a provision to securely mount by means of bolts, screw rivets or any other suitable means deflector plates 5 and baffle plates 3, the deflector plate 5 is used to disrupt laminar flow of the air and create toroidal or spiral flow this causes the air to interact with the baffle plate 3 which contains charcoal/activated carbon 4 that absorbs the VOC, aerosol and other particulate matter present in the air.The Baffle plate 3 is placed in the housing 1 in a manner that moving air has to collide with baffle plate this is further enhanced by addition of deflector plates 5 the turbulence increases particle inertial separation and forces aerosols and gaseous molecules into greater contact with the adsorption surfaces.Baffle Plate 3 Assembly is securely mounted in housing bolts, screw rivets or any other suitable means and in made of ABS plastic, stainless steel or any other suitable inert,non corrosive and non toxic material. Each Baffle plate 3 is embedded with charcoal/activated carbon 4 this arrangement offers passive air modulation and filtration without change of regular or cyclic change of air filters. In different embodiments of the present invention combination of UV Light 6 and Ozone Generator 7 are used to further ensure that organic contaminants like bacteria,viruses etc. are eliminated.

[0018] Both UV light 6 and ozone generator 7 are securely mounted in housing 1 using bolts, screw rivets or any other suitable means. Further a sensor is used to monitor the quality of air and which can be further programmed to create cyclic activation of UV Light 6 and Ozone generator 7, a controlled release of ozone gas from ozone generator 7 within safe concentration limits is controlled to neutralize biological contaminants and enhance overall sterilization performance. These active enhancements provide an additional layer of microbial control while maintaining the system’s primary use of Baffle plate 3 for filtration. Air flow in the housing 1 is done by Fans 8 selection which can be done based on size and configuration of Embodiment of the Invention.

[0019] Operation Principle: As contaminated air enters the inlet, it encounters the first set deflector and baffle plates, which deflect the airflow and begin the process of turbulence generation. Successive plates continue redirecting and slowing portions of the air stream, maximizing surface contact with the charcoal/activated carbon in the baffle plate. This repeated interaction enables adsorption of gaseous pollutants while assisting in the aggregation or capture of aerosols through mechanical impaction.
[0020] The combination of baffle-induced turbulence and prolonged residence time enhances the efficiency of odor and gas removal. Unlike conventional systems that rely on passive straight-through flow across flat filters, this design exploits the physical movement of air to optimize interaction with the adsorption media.

[0021] Advantages Over Existing Systems
● Low Maintenance:
The charcoal-coated baffles provide extended functional life, reducing the frequency of filter replacements compared to conventional activated carbon panels or chemical scrubbers.

● Cost Efficiency:

The use of low-cost charcoal materials and simple mechanical construction lowers manufacturing and operational costs.

● Energy Efficiency:

The system introduces minimal airflow resistance, ensuring efficient operation even when integrated into existing HVAC or ventilation systems.

● Simplicity and Scalability:
The design allows for easy scaling to various airflow volumes by adjusting the number and arrangement of baffle plates. The system can be adapted for both standalone units and inline ventilation applications.
, Claims:We claim:
1. An air purification system for removing odors, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), aerosols, and particulate matter from an air , comprising:
a) a housing having an air inlet and an air outlet defining an airflow path;
b) a plurality of baffle and deflector plates positioned within said housing along the airflow path, wherein said baffle plates are arranged to create multiple directional changes and turbulence in the airflow;
c) wherein at least a portion of the surface area of said baffle plates comprises a charcoal-based adsorption material configured to adsorb Odor molecules, VOCs, and gaseous pollutants from the air stream during contact;
d) wherein said arrangement of baffle and deflector plates increases the residence time and contact between the air stream and the charcoal-based adsorption surfaces.
2. The air purification system of as claimed in claim 1, wherein the charcoal-based adsorption material comprises activated charcoal or impregnated carbonaceous material applied as a coating, panel, or embedded layer on the baffle plates and not as filter.
3. The air purification system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said baffle plates are modular and replaceable to allow for periodic maintenance or replacement of the adsorption surfaces.
4. The air purification system of claim 1, wherein the system further includes one or more ultraviolet (UV) light sources positioned within the housing to irradiate the air stream and internal surfaces for microbial disinfection.
6. The air purification system of claim 1, wherein the system further includes an ozone generation module configured to introduce controlled concentrations of ozone into the airflow for enhanced microbial or odour control.
7. The air purification system of claim 1, wherein the housing and baffle plate assembly are configured to Increase air flow path while maintaining energy-efficient operation.
