Abstract: ABSTRACT The present invention provides a computer-implemented system and method for analyzing postcolonial trauma and gendered violence in literary narratives. The system comprises an input module to receive digitized texts with metadata, a preprocessing module performing tokenization, lemmatization, and linguistic feature extraction, and an analysis engine integrating trauma theory lexicons, gendered violence taxonomies, and narrative structure models to identify, classify, and annotate trauma and violence representations. A database module stores processed texts, annotations, and thematic classifications, while an output module generates structured thematic analysis reports and visualizations such as heat maps, network graphs, and timelines for scholarly interpretation. The method includes receiving texts, preprocessing, applying trauma and gendered violence analyses, narrative structure examination, data storage, and output generation. The invention enables structured, scalable, and interdisciplinary analysis, enhancing research, teaching, and comparative studies in postcolonial literature, trauma studies, and gender studies. Description:DESCRIPTION
Technical Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and computational literary analysis. More particularly, it pertains to an AI-based platform configured to analyze fictional narratives for postcolonial identity constructs, ethical dissonance, and underlying cultural themes, thereby facilitating advanced literary criticism, thematic mapping, and social justice research.
Background of the Invention
Postcolonial literary analysis examines how historical and cultural contexts of colonialism and imperialism influence narratives, characters, and identities within literary works. Traditional postcolonial criticism involves qualitative methodologies, requiring scholars to manually read, interpret, and critique texts using theoretical frameworks such as subaltern studies, hybridity, mimicry, and resistance discourse. While effective, such methods are time-consuming, inherently subjective, and limited in scalability when analysing large volumes of literary data.
With advancements in natural language processing (NLP) and computational linguistics, digital humanities tools have emerged to assist literary analysis. However, existing tools are predominantly designed for general text mining tasks such as keyword extraction, frequency counts, topic modelling, and basic sentiment analysis. They do not integrate cultural theory frameworks or possess the analytical depth necessary to identify nuanced postcolonial constructs such as colonial power dynamics, subaltern voices, or ethical dissonance embedded within character arcs and plot structures.
Ethical dissonance, which refers to conflicting moral beliefs and identity struggles experienced by characters in postcolonial contexts, remains particularly underexplored in computational models due to its abstract and multifaceted nature. No existing platforms combine AI-based linguistic analysis with postcolonial theoretical constructs to provide structured, scalable, and objective insights into fictional narratives.
Therefore, there exists a significant gap in automated tools that integrate AI, NLP, and postcolonial theory for advanced literary analysis. Addressing this gap, the present invention provides an AI-based platform specifically designed to analyse postcolonial identity constructs and ethical dissonance within fictional texts. The invention aims to empower researchers, educators, and students by automating complex critical analyses, enhancing efficiency, minimising bias, and facilitating deeper understanding of cultural and ethical themes in literature.

The present invention discloses an AI-based platform designed to perform advanced computational analysis of fictional narratives, focusing specifically on postcolonial identity constructs and ethical dissonance. The platform comprises multiple integrated modules operating synergistically to deliver structured, theory-based literary insights.
The data ingestion module is configured to receive digital literary texts in various formats including .txt, .pdf, .docx, and image-based documents. An integrated optical character recognition (OCR) subsystem converts scanned text images into machine-readable text, ensuring compatibility across diverse literary archives and databases.
The natural language processing (NLP) engine utilizes advanced transformer-based language models, such as BERT or RoBERTa fine-tuned on extensive literary corpora. This engine performs sophisticated computational linguistic tasks including tokenization, lemmatization, named entity recognition to identify characters and settings, coreference resolution to maintain narrative coherence, and semantic role labelling to understand character actions, relationships, and narrative structures within the text.
The postcolonial analysis engine forms the core of the invention. It incorporates computational algorithms based on established postcolonial theoretical frameworks to identify and classify narrative segments reflecting:
• Colonial power dynamics, through detection of hierarchical relationships, subjugation verbs, and colonial lexicon usage.
• Subaltern voices, by analyzing underrepresented or marginalized character perspectives using sentiment polarity combined with semantic contexts.
• Hybridity and mimicry, by detecting code-switching, blended cultural referents, and shifts in character behavior indicating cultural assimilation or resistance.
• Resistance narratives, by identifying defiance verbs, oppositional discourse structures, and assertive speech acts challenging colonial hegemony.
• Ethical dissonance, by examining conflicting moral expressions, cognitive dissonance in character development, and internal monologues revealing cultural guilt, shame, identity fragmentation, or moral struggle. This analysis combines psychological emotion lexicons, moral conflict databases, and narrative arc progression algorithms to detect such dissonance with high specificity.
The thematic mapping module visualises the outputs of the analysis engine, generating interactive graphs and heat maps illustrating relationships among characters, colonial structures, and ethical conflict zones within the narrative.
The user interface module facilitates:
• Input of literary texts.
• Real-time display of analytical results including extracted characters, identified postcolonial constructs, and ethical dissonance markers.
• Interactive thematic graphs to explore character relationships and cultural themes.
• Export of comprehensive analytical reports in multiple formats for academic publication, pedagogy, and critical research.
The platform operates via a backend server hosting AI models, databases for analyzed data storage, and a secure frontend accessible through web browsers. This invention thereby automates complex postcolonial and ethical analyses, enhances research efficiency, reduces subjective biases, and provides structured insights integrating natural language processing, deep learning, and cultural theory within a single computational framework.
