“A Split Metallic Casing For A Lithium Ion Battery Pack Enabling Non Destructive Serviceability And Reusability”

Abstract: A split metallic casing for a lithium-ion battery pack is disclosed, comprising diagonally separable base sections and a removable top cover secured using countersunk screws. The configuration enables non-destructive disassembly and removal of a battery cell pack encapsulated with silicone based potting material. The design improves serviceability, safety, and reusability of the battery enclosure while eliminating the need for mechanical cutting.

Specification

Description:10.1 Overall Structure
3-part casing:
Base Part 1
Base Part 2 (diagonal split)
Top cover
Material: Mild steel / GI / alternatives
10.2 Diagonal Split Configuration
Provides:
Full accessibility to potting interface
Uniform separation force
Better manufacturability
> Unlike horizontal or vertical splits, the diagonal configuration enables external access to all bonding
interfaces.
10.3 Fastening System
M4 countersunk screws
Length: ~7 mm
Advantages:
Adequate strength
No internal interference
Flush surface
10.4 Flange Design
15 mm flange width
Ensures:
Proper sealing
Structural strength
10.5 Sealing Mechanism
Silicone sealant instead of gasket
Why better:
No size increase
Better gap filling
Continuous sealing
10.6 Disassembly & Serviceability Process
1. Remove screws
2. Separate top
3. Insert separating sheet
4. Detach potting + cell pack
5. Remove casing
6. Clean potting manually
10.7 Testing & Validation
IP test (1 meter, 30 min)
Electrical tests (ACIR, DCIR)
Road testing
10.8 Advantages
No cutting required
Reusable casing
Reduced service time (hours → minutes)
Improved safety
Cost reduction , Claims:Claim 1 (Independent)
A split metallic casing for a battery pack comprising:
at least two base portions joined along a diagonal interface;
a removable top cover;
fastening means comprising countersunk screws;
wherein the casing is configured to enable non-destructive disassembly and removal of an
encapsulated battery cell pack.
Claim 2
The casing as claimed in claim 1, wherein the diagonal split provides access to all bonding interfaces
between potting material and casing.
Claim 3
The casing as claimed in claim 1, wherein M4 countersunk screws of approximately 7 mm length are
used.
Claim 4
The casing as claimed in claim 1, wherein sealing is achieved using silicone sealant.
Claim 5
The casing as claimed in claim 1, wherein the casing is reusable after disassembly.
Claim 6
The casing as claimed in claim 1, wherein flange width is approximately 15 mm.
