The following specification particularly describes and ascertains the nature of this invention and the manner in which it is to be performed.

Field of Invention

[001] The present invention is related to a tool for facilitating assembly of an automotive multi-plate wet clutch outside of factory settings. It also pertains to the method of assembly using such a tool outside of factory settings. The tool and its method of utilization enables quicker field trials of different automotive multi-plate wet clutches.

Background of the Invention

[002] A typical two/three wheeler multi-plate wet clutch is assembled directly on the vehicle’s transmission shaft during vehicle’s production or maintenance. This manner of assembling a clutch makes it hard to ensure proper alignment of sub-components if vehicle testing has to be carried out in rapid succession during field trials or even during proto clutch testing. That is because assembly line tools and implements are not easily accessible in such instances. The primary issue here being that even slight misalignments of individual sub-components during assembly can add up so as to magnify judder and rattle issues even if the sub-components have otherwise been manufactured within tolerance limits. This can lead to their increased rejection during field trials/proto clutch testing, and add to both monetary cost and time delays in implementation of beneficial changes on the clutches. This can cumulatively reduce customer satisfaction due to unresolved technical issues which may eventually translate into economic loss due to reduced sales.

[003] The proper on field assembly of multi-plate wet clutches is therefore a problem of great technical and economic significance that has to be addressed if faster and more economic development of multi-plate wet clutches has to be achieved. It is therefore an objective of the present invention to provide an assembly tool and a method of its utilization thereof to facilitate proper and faster assembly of multi-plate wet clutches outside the factories and on the field.

[004] It is yet another objective of the present invention to reduce the rejections that happen during field trials due to improper assembly of the multi-plate wet clutches.

[005] It is still another objective of the present invention to reduce cost and time associated with development and deployment of new multi-plate wet clutches.

[006] It is another objective of the present invention to reduce occurrence of judder and rattling issues due to improper assembly of multi-plate wet clutches.

Detailed Description of the Present Invention

[0018] The invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings which must not be viewed as restricting the scope and ambit of the invention. Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the assembly tool (100A) for implementing the method for proper on field assembly of multi-plate wet clutches, in accordance with the first preferred embodiment of the present invention, comprises of a bush (10A), and a body (20A).

[0019] The bush (10A) (refer fig. 2) is configured to have an internal profile matching the external profile of the shaft portion (20AS) of the body (20A) thereby allowing a perfect fit between said bush (10A) and the shaft portion (20AS). The bush (10A) additionally has an external profile conforming with the internal profile of the central opening given in the base of the housing assembly (1). The shaft portion (20AS) of the body (20A) is centrally located over the base (20AB) of the body (20A) thereby allowing the body (20A) to be conveniently held and utilized for applying an aligning force during the assembly of multi-plate wet clutches. The shaft portion (20AS) is perpendicular to the base (20AB).

[0020] The method for proper on field assembly of multi-plate wet clutches comprising a housing assembly (1), a wheel clutch (2), friction and clutch plate stack (3), a hub clutch (4), compression spring (5), a clutch holder (6), and bolts (7) through utilisation of the assembly tool (100A), has the following steps-
- as a first step for assembly utilizing the assembly tool (100A), a bush (10A) having an external profile conforming with the internal profile of the central opening given in the base of the housing assembly (1) is fitted in said central opening in the base of the housing assembly (1); here the internal profile of this bush (10A) also conforms with the external profile of a shaft portion (20AS) of the assembly tool (100A);
- as a second step, a plate clutch assembly formed by the friction and clutch plate stack (3), a hub clutch (4), a clutch holder (6), compression spring (5) and bolts (7) is positioned within the housing assembly (1) in a manner so as to roughly align the central opening of said plate clutch assembly with the corresponding central opening of the housing assembly (1);
- as a third step, the assembly tool (100A) is held along its base (20AB) and its shaft portion (20AS) is passed through the central opening of said plate clutch assembly, particularly its clutch holder (6), and the bush (10A) so as to bring the plate clutch assembly including its clutch holder (6) and the housing assembly (1) in alignment with each other with application of an aligning force; and
- as a fourth step, the bolts (7) of the plate clutch assembly are now tightened with the assembly tool (100A) in place to hold and fix the alignment of the plate clutch assembly, including its clutch holder (6), and the housing assembly (1) in perfect alignment with respect to each other.

[0021] It must be noted that a multi-plate wet clutch can have additional sub-components and a varied internal arrangement to accommodate the additional sub-components, but the tool and the method as disclosed above remains utilizable as long as there is a central opening in the housing assembly (1) that can accommodate the bush (10A), and also central opening(s) in other essential sub-components that allows for the passage of the shaft portion (20AS) and their alignment through application of an aligning force utilizing the assembly tool (100A).

[0022] Referring to Fig. 3, the assembly tool (100B) for implementing the method for proper on field assembly of multi-plate wet clutches, in accordance with the second preferred embodiment of the present invention, comprises of a body (20B). A shaft portion (20BS) of the body (20B) is centrally located over an upper base portion (20BB2). The shaft portion (20BS) is perpendicular to the base portions (20BB1 and 20BB2). The upper base portion (20BB2) is itself centrally located over the lower base portion (20BB1) of the body (20B) thereby allowing the body (20B) to conveniently function as an axis for guiding the alignment of different sub-components during the assembly of a multi-plate wet clutches. The assembly tool (100B), so described, forms the first variant of the assembly tool (100B).

[0023] The first variant of the assembly tool (100B) is to be ordinarily utilized along with the guiding element (10B) when assembling the multi-plate wet clutch in accordance with the disclosed method in this specification. This guiding element (10B), so ordinarily utilized, has an internal profile matching the external profile of the shaft portion (20BS) of the body (20B) thereby allowing a perfect fit between said guiding element (10B) and the shaft portion (20BS). The guiding element (10B) can be a washer or a bearing cup guide that is so constructed so as to have a hollow cylindrical shaped with two different external diameter portions.

[0024] In a second variant of the second preferred embodiment of the assembly tool (100B) (refer Figs 4a and 4b), the body (20B) is configured to have an additional upper base portion (20BB3) between the upper base portion (20BB2) and the shaft portion (20BS) to allow for better alignment in a multi-plate wet clutch provided with an additional different internal diameter portion in its axial construction. This variant of the second preferred embodiment of the assembly tool can be utilized for assembling multi-plate wet clutches without the accompanying guiding element (10B). The shaft portion (20BS) is perpendicular to the base portion (20BB3) as well. The other features of the second variant can be stated to be the same as the first variant of the assembly tool (100B).

[0025] The method for proper on field assembly of multi-plate wet clutches comprising a housing assembly (1), a wheel clutch (2), friction and clutch plate stack (3), a hub clutch (4), compression spring (5), a clutch holder (6), and bolts (7) through utilisation of the assembly tool (100B), has the following steps-
- as a first step, for assembly utilizing assembly tool (100B), a shaft portion (20BS) is inserted into the central opening provided in the base of the housing clutch assembly (1) until said central opening of the housing clutch assembly (1) comes into alignment with the upper base portion (20BB2) and the outside surface of the base of the housing clutch assembly (1) comes to rest against the lower base portion (20BB1) of the assembly tool (100B);
- as a second step, a plate clutch assembly formed by the friction and clutch plate stack (3), a hub clutch (4), a clutch holder (6), compression spring (5) and bolts (7) is positioned within the housing assembly (1) in a manner so as to align the central opening of said plate clutch assembly with the shaft portion (20BS), and the upper base portion (20BB2), and thereby also the central opening of the housing assembly (1); if the second variant of the assembly tool (100B) is utilized for executing this method, during the execution of the second step, the plate clutch assembly formed by the friction and clutch plate stack (3), a hub clutch (4), a clutch holder (6), compression spring (5) and bolts (7) is positioned within the housing assembly (1) in a manner so as to align the central opening of said plate clutch assembly with an upper base portion (20BB3) as well in addition to the shaft portion (20BS) and the upper base portion (20BB2); and
- as a third step, the bolts (7) are now tightened to fix the alignment of the plate clutch assembly with the housing clutch assembly. If the first variant of the assembly tool (100B) is utilized for executing this method, a guiding element (10B) is inserted on top of the shaft portion (20BS) of the assembly tool (100B) before the execution of this step to assist in maintaining the alignment of the plate clutch assembly and the housing assembly (1). No guiding element (10B) is required during execution of this step if the second variant of the assembly tool (100B) is utilized for executing this method.

[0026] It must be noted that a multi-plate wet clutch can have additional sub-components and a varied internal arrangement to accommodate the additional sub-components, but the tool and the method as disclosed above remains utilizable as long as there is a central opening in the housing assembly (1) that can receive and align with the upper base portion (20BB2), central opening(s) in other sub-component(s) that allows them to be guided into alignment by the shaft portion (20BS) (and also the upper base portion (20BB3) if the second variant of the assembly tool (100B) has to be utilized), and dimensions that permit the optional utilization of guiding element (10B) (this last condition is optional, i.e. only if the first variant of the assembly tool ((100B) has to be utilized) to facilitate the holding of the attained alignment while the provided bolts are tightened.
[0027] The technical advantages, as provided by the assembly tool (100A, 100B) and their method of utilization for the proper on field assembly of multi-plate wet clutches are: -
- It facilitates proper and faster assembly of multi-plate wet clutches outside the factories and on the field.
- It reduces the rejections that happen during field trials due to improper assembly of the multi-plate wet clutches.
- It reduces cost and time associated with development and deployment of new multi-plate wet clutches.
- It reduces the occurrence of judder and rattling issues due to improper assembly of multi-plate wet clutches.
- It facilitates easy field repairs on a multi-plate wet clutch.
- It limits/maintains run out to less than 0.2 mm, thereby helping in ensuring coaxiality of essential sub-components of the multi-plate wet clutch even though they have been assembled in field conditions.

[0028] The invention and its method of utilization has been described with reference to construction of a typical multi-plate wet clutch assembly. It must be noted that general construction of a multi-plate wet clutch assembly can be different while still allowing the disclosed assembly tools and methods to be utilized for their assembly in field conditions with insubstantial alterations. The differences in the construction of the multi-plate wet clutch assembly alone therefore does not render the resulting variants outside the scope of the claims of this invention. , Claims:We Claim
