Travelling Formwork System For Continuous Wall Casting In Buildings And Infrastructure Projects

Abstract: The present invention relates to construction technologies, specifically to a movable or travelling formwork system used for the continuous casting of reinforced concrete walls. The system eliminates repeated dismantling, relocation, and re-erection of conventional shuttering systems and is particularly suited for applications where one side of the wall is highly confined, restricting normal shutter retraction and crane access. The invention comprises a rail-supported travelling formwork system designed for continuous wall casting, especially suited for confined-space environments. The system moves along a predefined alignment using a rail mechanism, similar to a miniature train track, allowing repeated use without dismantling. A key feature of the invention is the controlled shutter retraction mechanism, which allows the shutter on the confined side to retract by as little as 50 mm, sufficient for de-shuttering without requiring additional clearance. After de-shuttering, the entire formwork assembly is shifted as a single unit to the next wall segment. Vertical supporting members provided where the space is less, so the wall shutter can maintain the wall width.

Specification

) Field of the Invention The present invention relates to construction technologies, specifically to a movable or travelling formwork system used for the continuous casting of reinforced concrete walls. The system eliminates repeated dismantling, relocation, and re-erection of conventional shuttering systems and is particularly suited for applications where one side of the wall is highly confined, restricting normal shutter retraction and crane
access.
3) Background of the Invention In projects involving long or continuous walls, such as retaining walls where the space is less, traditional shuttering systems require extensive crane usage, repeated manual handling, and high manpower involvement. This leads to increased cycle time, safety risks, and reduced productivity.
The problem becomes more critical in confined spaces, where: • One side of the wall has very limited clearance. • Conventional shutters cannot be opened or removed due to space constraints.
Existing systems do not effectively address minimal shutter retraction requirements (as low as 50 mm) combined with continuous wall casting. Therefore, there is a need for a travelling formwork system capable of operating in confined conditions,

allowing controlled shutter retraction and movement of the entire system without
dismantling.
4) Purpose of the Invention
The primary purpose of the travelling formwork system is to: • Provide a continuous, obstruction-free shuttering arrangement for casting long and straight concrete walls.
• Enable longitudinal movement of the complete formwork system along the
wall alignment.
• Allow minimal shutter retraction (approximately 50 mm) on one side to accommodate highly confined spaces and reduce crane usage. • Reduce construction cycle time, labor dependency, and overall cost. • Facilitate efficient and repetitive wall casting over long distances or multiple
segments.
• Enable wail construction where one side clearance is severely restricted without compromising quality or safety.

5) Summary of the Invention

Vertical support is provided inside the wall shutter. As much as the lesser 350-400mm gap, on one side this system is very effective to use.
Key Components of the System: 1. Rail Track Assembly
• Fabricated using steel channels or sections placed on leveled ground. • In uneven terrain, a leveling arrangement is provided using cones, brackets, adjustable supports, or base frames. • The rail track is firmly anchored to ensure stability during casting and
movement.
2. Travelling Frame Structure
• Constructed using Aluform/Alufo props, steel bracings, and structural
members.
• Mounted on castor wheels running on the rail track and working platform. • A top-mounted hanging guide roller system supports and aligns the wall
shutters.
• The frame length corresponds to the planned shuttering length (typically
20-30 meters).
• Once positioned, the system is locked using adjustable prop legs for
casting stability.
3. Shuttering Arrangement (Confined Space Optimized) • Wall shutters are suspended using roller-based retractable hanging
supports.
• One side shutter (confined side) is designed to retract only 50 mm, enabling safe de-shuttering in very limited clearance conditions.

. Tie rods, form ties, walers, and alignment support ensure structural
integrity.
• Reinforcement fixing is facilitated by using integrated rebar brackets and
working platforms.
• The system allows segment-wise casting, where shutters are retracted minimally and the entire unit is shifted forward without dismantling.
4. Operational Sequence
1. Rail and travelling formwork systems are installed initially. Reinforcement for the first wall segment is fixed. Shutters are closed, aligned, and locked.
Concrete is poured from the top casting platform. After initial curing, shutters are loosened.
2. The confined-side shutter retracts by only 50 mm. The entire travelling formwork system is shifted to the next segment along the rail. The process is repeated continuously for the full wall length.
6) Advantages of the Invention • Enables continuous wall casting without dismantling shuttering and used in
confined space.
• Highly effective for confined spaces where conventional shutter retraction is
not possible.
• Allows minimal shutter retraction (—50 mm) on congested sides. • Entire system shifts as a single unit, reducing handling time. • Minimal crane dependency after initial installation. • Significant reduction in cycle time compared to traditional methods.

Improved workmen productivity through repetitive and standardized
operations.

The invention is applicable in the construction industry, particularly in projects involving long or repetitive reinforced concrete wall construction in constrained environments. The rail-supported travelling formwork system enables continuous and efficient casting of walls without repeated dismantling and reinstallation of shuttering, thereby improving productivity, safety, and construction quality.
The system is especially suitable for the construction of basement retaining walls, underground structures, shear walls, tunnel approach walls, utility corridors, waterretaining structures, and boundary or compound walls where access is restricted on one side. It can also be applied in metro rail projects, underground stations, high-rise building basements, industrial facilities, sewage and water treatment plants, and infrastructure corridors where conventional crane-assisted shutter movement is
difficult.

1 A rail-supported travelling formwork system for continuous casting of reinforced concrete walls in confined spaces, comprising: o A rail track assembly arranged along a predefined wall alignment. o A travelling frame structure movably mounted on the rail track assembly through wheels or rollers. o A shuttering arrangement supported by the travelling frame structure for forming opposite faces of a reinforced concrete wall. o A controlled shutter retraction mechanism configured to retract at least one shutter by a limited distance sufficient for de-shuttering in restricted
spaces.
wherein the travelling frame structure, together with the shuttering arrangement, is adapted to move as a single integrated unit along the rail track assembly after de-shuttering, thereby enabling continuous or segment-wise casting of reinforced concrete walls without dismantling the formwork system, particularly in locations where access or clearance on one side of the wall is
limited.
