TITLE OF THE INVENTION
An adapter for auxiliary terminal boxes for motor housings
APPLICANTS:
Crompton Greaves Limited, CG House, Dr Annie Besant Road, Worli, Mumbai 400 030, Maharashtra, India, an Indian Company
INVENTOR (S):
Mishra Neetendra of Crompton Greaves Ltd, Machines (M7) Division, D-5, Industrial Area, MPAKVN, Mandideep - 462046, Madhya Pradesh, India, An Indian national.
PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION:
The following specification particularly describes the nature of this invention and the manner in which it is to be performed:

Field of the Invention:
This invention relates to the field of motors.
Particularly, this invention relates to terminal boxes for motors.
Still particularly, this invention relates to an adapter for auxiliary terminal boxes for motor frames.
Background of the Invention:
A motor for electrical purposes, i.e. an electric motor, is a device which converts electrical energy to mechanical energy. For industrial use, the ratings of motor may typically be very high. They may be placed in housings and are hence called totally enclosed motors.
The term 'TEFC motors' relates to Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled motors. It may be fitted or have provisions for terminal boxes on two opposite sides across the length of the housing.
A motor, typically, has a driving side and a non driving side. Each side may be fitted with a terminal box such as a main terminal box and a star terminal box. These boxes occupy the operative front side and the operative back side of the motor.

Sometimes, there is a need for an auxiliary terminal box. These auxiliary boxes may include RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) terminal boxes, heater terminal boxes or the like.
In the existing design, it was not possible to mount big Terminal Box on small length motors.
Hence, in the previous design, it was needed to change the complete Terminal Box assembly and take certification for the same for electrical and mechanical safety compliance, which was a very tedious and expensive task. Even if auxiliary terminal boxes are placed, these were not certified equipment.
Prior Art:
The prior art reveals non-certified, all-in-one, terminal boxes for High Tension motors which are being used.
DE19754694 discloses an adapter plate for fastening terminal boxes to extruded housings for electric motors.
JP 10257708 discloses a motor with built-in inverter.
US 5192888 discloses a motor terminal box.
JP 57078346 discloses a terminal box attaching structure for electric machine.

None of the above patent document refers to auxiliary devices or components or equipment being mounted onto a motor housing.
There is a need for an adapter which efficiently mounts auxiliary devices or components or equipment in compliance with electrical and mechanical standards of safety.
Objects of the Invention:
An object of the invention is to provide an adapter adapted to include relatively larger terminal boxes with relatively smaller motor housing or frames.
Another object of the invention is to provide a stable terminal box adapter adapted to be fitted with a range of sizes of motor housings.
Yet another object of the invention is to reduce the expense caused in the prior art assembly due to refitting of a terminal box and adhering to electrical and mechanical safety compliance by means of testing.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a certified terminal box.
Summary of the Invention:
According to this invention, there is provided an adapter for auxiliary terminal boxes for motor housing, said adapter comprises:
a. a first frame divided into a first portion and a second portion; and

b. second frame adapted to map over said second portion of said first frame.
Preferably, said first frame is a rectangular frame.
Preferably, said second frame is a square frame.
Typically, said first frame includes peripheral bolting holes for mounting purposes.
Typically, said second frame includes peripheral bolting holes for mounting purposes.
According to this invention, there is provided an adapter for auxiliary terminal boxes for motor housing, said adapter comprises:
a. a first frame divided into a first portion and a second portion, said first frame
adapted to be fitted onto a side of a motor housing in a manner such that a
first portion adheres to the motor housing while said second portion
extending from said first portion extends away from said motor housing; and
b. a second frame adapted to map over said second portion of said first frame,
said second frame adapted to receive an auxiliary device for mounting
purposes and said second frame (and second portion) extending beyond the
perimeter of said motor housing.
According to this invention, there is provided a motor with a motor housing having an auxiliary terminal box adapter attached, said motor housing comprises:
a. a first frame divided into a first portion and a second portion, said first frame adapted to be fitted onto a side of a motor housing in a manner such that a

first portion adheres to the motor housing while said second portion extending from said first portion extends away from said motor housing; and b. a second frame adapted to map over said second portion of said first frame, said second frame adapted to receive an auxiliary device for mounting purposes and said second frame (and second portion) extending beyond the perimeter of said motor housing.
Brief Description of the Accompanying Drawings:
Figure 1a illustrates a schematic of a side view of a motor housing with auxiliary terminal box attached thereto.
Figure lb illustrates a schematic of a front view of Figure la.
The invention will now be described in relation to the accompanying drawings, in
which:
Figure 2 illustrates an isometric view of an adapter for auxiliary terminal boxes for
motor housing;
Figure 3 a illustrates a front view of the adapter of Figure 2;
Figure 3b illustrates a side view of the adapter of Figure 2;
Figure 3 c illustrates a bottom view of the adapter of Figure 2;
Figure 4a illustrates a schematic of a side view of a motor housing with auxiliary
terminal box attached onto an adapter of Figures 2, 3 a, 3b, and 3c.
Figure 4b illustrates a schematic of a front view of Figure 4a.
Detailed Description of the Accompanying Drawings:

Figure la illustrates a schematic of a side view of a motor housing with auxiliary
terminal box attached thereto.
Figure lb illustrates a schematic of a front view of Figure la.
A motor frame (12) includes an auxiliary device such as a RTD box / heater box (14) located onto it. A terminal box (16) is mounted onto the motor frame (12). It is noted, here, that there is fouling caused due to the auxiliary devices and the terminal box.
According to this invention, there is provided an adapter for auxiliary terminal boxes for motor housings.
Figure 2 illustrates an isometric view of an adapter (100) for auxiliary terminal boxes for motor housing;
Figure 3a illustrates a front view of the adapter of Figure 2. Figure 3b illustrates a side view of the adapter of Figure 2. Figure 3c illustrates a bottom view of the adapter of Figure 2.
Figure 4a illustrates a schematic of a side view of a motor housing with auxiliary terminal box attached onto an adapter of Figures 2, 3a, 3b, and 3c. Figure 4b illustrates a schematic of a front view of Figure 4a.
In accordance with an embodiment of this invention, there is provided a first frame (26) adapted to be fitted onto a side of the motor (12) housing in a manner such

that a first portion (22) adheres to the motor housing (12) while the second portion (24) extending from the first portion extends away from the motor housing (12) (as shown in Figure 4b of the accompanying drawings).
Typically, the first frame is a rectangular frame.
In accordance with another embodiment of this invention, there is provided a second frame (28) adapted to map over said second portion of said first frame. Said second frame (28) is adapted to receive an auxiliary device for mounting purposes. This second frame (and second portion) extends beyond the perimeter of the motor housing and hence, does not interfere (or foul) with any or associated equipment of the motor housing.
Typically, the first frame is a square frame.
Bolting holes are provides on both the first frame and the second frame for mounting purposes.
While this detailed description has disclosed certain specific embodiments of the present invention for illustrative purposes, various modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the following claims, and it is to be distinctly understood that the foregoing descriptive matter is to be interpreted merely as illustrative of the invention and not as a limitation.
