Abstract: A high pressure fuel pump 10 is described. The high pressure fuel pump 10 comprises a housing 12, and a barrel 14 positioned within the housing 12. A plunger 16 is positioned within the barrel 14, the plunger 16 adapted to reciprocate within the barrel 14 to deliver pressurized fuel from the high pressure fuel pump 10. A bottom spring plate 18 is integrally formed at an end of the plunger 16. The bottom spring plate 18 is adapted to translate from a bottom dead center position to a top dead center position when the plunger 16 translates from the bottom dead center position to the top dead center position.
1. A high pressure fuel pump (10), said high pressure fuel pump (10) comprising:
a housing (12), and a barrel (14) positioned within said housing (12);
a plunger (16) positioned within said barrel (14), said plunger (16) adapted to reciprocate within said barrel (14) to deliver pressurized fuel from said high pressure fuel pump (10); characterized in that
a bottom spring plate (18) integrally formed at an end of said plunger (16), said bottom spring plate (18) adapted to translate from a bottom dead center position to a top dead center position when said plunger (16) translates from the bottom dead center position to the top dead center position.
2. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1 wherein said bottom spring plate (18) comprises a circular through hole (20) partially drilled through a bottom portion of said bottom spring plate (18), said circular through hole (20) adapted to reduce surface area contact between said bottom spring plate (18) and a roller tappet (21) when said bottom spring plate (18) translates to the bottom dead center position.

The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1 wherein a spring member (22) is positioned between said barrel (14) and a top portion of said bottom spring plate (18), said spring member (22) adapted to restore said bottom spring plate (18) to the bottom dead center position after said plunger (16) has delivered pressurized fuel from said high pressure fuel pump (10).

The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 3 further comprising a washer (24) positioned between said spring member (22) and the top portion of said bottom spring plate (18), said washer (24) facilitates preventing erosion of material from the top portion of said bottom spring plate (18) due to abrasive action between said spring member (22) and the top portion of said bottom spring plate (18).

The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 4 wherein said bottom spring plate (18) comprises a first stepped portion (26) and a second stepped portion (28), wherein said washer (24) is positioned between said spring member (22) and the first stepped portion (26) to facilitate preventing erosion of material from the first stepped portion (26) due to abrasive action between said spring member (22) and the first stepped portion (26).
6. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 5 wherein the
second stepped portion (28) of said bottom spring plate (18) is integrally formed at the end of said plunger (16) to constitute a unitary assembly.
