TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present subject matter described herein, relates to a brake lever for fitment of a brake cable. More particularly, the present subject matter described herein relates to a brake lever for connecting a brake cable having a stopper to a drum brake of a vehicle which ensures the correct fitment of the brake cable.
BACKGROUND
[0002] Background description includes information that may be useful in understanding the present invention. It is not an admission that any of the information provided herein is prior art or relevant to the presently claimed invention, or that any publication specifically or implicitly referenced is prior art.
[0003] As a conventional brake cable connecting apparatus for a drum brake, a forward-pull type parking brake apparatus is well-known in the art and consists of a brake lever pivotally supported on a brake shoe at a base portion thereof and a brake cable connected on a free end of the brake lever through a stopper at the tip end.
[0004] Referring to Fig. 1, a U-shaped cable-receiving groove is formed at a free end of the brake lever. One end of the cable is connected to a parking brake operating means such as a parking brake lever in the cabin, and the other or a tip end of the cable penetrates through a back plate of drum brake and is received in the cable-receiving groove of the brake lever. A stopper is securely fixed on the tip end of the cable and is engaged with the cable receiving groove of the brake lever, thereby preventing the cable from coming off from the cable receiving groove. Actuating the parking brake operating means such as the parking brake lever for remotely pulling the cable causes rotation of the brake lever and urges the brake shoes to separate apart from each other to effect the parking braking.

[0005] One idea of a brake cable connecting apparatus, displaying a function of inserting a cable from outside into a drum brake and precisely receiving that cable in a brake cable-receiving groove and further snapping a cable end automatically on an edge surface of the groove at the side of the cable releasing direction, is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 5,002,159.
[0006] However, the above-described prior art of the brake cable connecting apparatus presents the possibility that the cable end happens to be disengaged from the brake lever if the cable slacks or returns to the initial position earlier than the brake lever when the parking brake is released. Also, one of the major drawbacks of the existing brake lever (brake cable connecting apparatus) is that due to the U shape, it becomes very difficult to manually fit the brake cable in the insertion groove. Since the insertion groove is open from the top, which is inside the drum brake assembly, it leaves very less space for insertion of the brake cable in the insertion groove. This may also result in improper insertion of the brake cable due to which the brake cable may come out of the insertion groove when the brake lever is pulled by actuating the parking brake lever in the cabin.
[0007] The brake levers as disclosed in the prior arts do not have a resting position for the stopper, which makes the brake cable susceptible to get disengaged from the brake lever. This may result in the parking brake failure.
[0008] Further, the brake lever in the prior arts, do not involve any provision of inspecting the fitment of the brake cable. Although, an inspecting hole is provided on brake shoe, it becomes visually very difficult to determine whether stopper of the brake cable has been fitted perfectly or not. If the fitment of the brake cable is incorrect or it becomes loose due to disengagement of the brake cable, it may result in the brake failure and may cause an accident.
[0009] Hence, there is a need for a brake lever for connecting a brake cable with stopper to a drum brake, which provides a resting place for the stopper of the brake cable and the provisions for the inspection post assembly.

[0041] The main objective of the present invention is to provide a brake lever for connecting a brake cable with stopper to a drum brake.
[0042] The brake lever for connecting a brake cable with a stopper to a drum brake includes a top end and a bottom end. The brake lever engages the parking brake when the hand brake of the vehicle is pulled. One end of the brake cable is connected with the hand brake and the other end is inserted into the insertion groove provided at the bottom end of the brake lever. To ensure a proper fitment of the brake cable, a brake lever according to the present invention is disclosed.
[0043] Referring to Fig. 2, 3 and 4, a brake lever (200) for connecting a brake cable (400) with a stopper (401) to a drum brake, according to the present

invention is disclosed. The brake lever (200) comprises of two ends, a top end
(201) and a bottom end (202). The top end (201) is mounted on the drum brake assembly and the bottom end (202), having an inverted "U" shaped structure (203), houses the brake cable (400) in an insertion groove (204) which is provided at the bottom of the inverted "U" shaped structure (203). Further, the bottom end
(202) defines a stopper resting surface (302).
[0044] The bottom end (202) further comprises of inward tapered edges on top side (303) and right side (304) (shown in fig. 4a) and left side (305). The inward tapered edges (303a, 304a and 305a) are provided to guide the stopper (401) towards the stopper resting surface (302). The bottom end (202) of the brake lever (200) comprises of the insertion groove (204) wherein the brake cable (400) is inserted.
[0045] Further, the end points of the sides (304 and 305) of the inverted "U" shaped structure (203) project towards each other to define an entry (405) for the brake cable. These projections form bottom side (306) of the bottom end (202) and also make a part of the resting surface (302).
[0046] According to one embodiment of the present invention, the resting surface (302) is formed by inner surfaces of the right side (304), the left side (305) and the bottom side (306) of the bottom end (202).
[0047] Referring to Fig. 4a, 5 and 6, the assembly process of the brake cable
(400) with the stopper (401) in the brake lever (200) is disclosed. After the brake cable (400) is inserted to the bottom end of the brake lever, the brake cable is pulled such that the stopper (401) moves in the direction of pull and the stopper
(401) slides towards the resting surface (302). The inward tapered edges (303a, 304a & 305a) guides the stopper (401) towards the stopper resting surface (302) in such a way that the stopper (401) is automatically centralized in its position. The projections of the end points of the sides (304 & 305) ensures that the stopper (401) fits perfectly on the resting surface (302).

[0048] Further, the bottom end (202) of the brake lever (200) comprises of a hole (205a) on left side (305) to ensure the proper fitment of the brake cable (400) during the assembly and during the inspection.
[0049] It will be understood by those within the art that, in general, terms used herein, and especially in the appended claims (e.g., bodies of the appended claims) are generally intended as "open" terms (e.g., the term "including" should be interpreted as "including but not limited to," the term "having" should be interpreted as "having at least," the term "includes" should be interpreted as "includes but is not limited to," etc.). It will be further understood by those within the art that if a specific number of an introduced claim recitation is intended, such an intent will be explicitly recited in the claim, and in the absence of such recitation no such intent is present. For example, as an aid to understanding, the following appended claims may contain usage of the introductory phrases "at least one" and "one or more" to introduce claim recitations. However, the use of such phrases should not be construed to imply that the introduction of a claim recitation by the indefinite articles "a" or "an" limits any particular claim containing such introduced claim recitation to inventions containing only one such recitation, even when the same claim includes the introductory phrases "one or more" or "at least one" and indefinite articles such as "a" or "an" (e.g., "a" and/or "an" should typically be interpreted to mean "at least one" or "one or more"); the same holds true for the use of definite articles used to introduce claim recitations. In addition, even if a specific number of an introduced claim recitation is explicitly recited, those skilled in the art will recognize that such recitation should typically be interpreted to mean at least the recited number (e.g., the bare recitation of "two recitations," without other modifiers, typically means at least two recitations, or two or more recitations). Furthermore, in those instances where a convention analogous to "at least one of A, B, and C, etc." is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention (e.g., "a system having at least one of A, B, and C" would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and/or A, B, and C together, etc.).

In those instances where a convention analogous to "at least one of A, B, or C, etc." is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention (e.g., "a system having at least one of A, B, or C" would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and/or A, B, and C together, etc.). It will be further understood by those within the art that virtually any disjunctive word and/or phrase presenting two or more alternative terms, whether in the description, claims, or drawings, should be understood to contemplate the possibilities of including one of the terms, either of the terms, or both terms. For example, the phrase "A or B" will be understood to include the possibilities of "A" or "B" or "A and B."
[0050] While the foregoing describes various embodiments of the invention, other and further embodiments of the invention may be devised without departing from the basic scope thereof. The scope of the invention is determined by the claims that follow. The invention is not limited to the described embodiments, versions or examples, which are included to enable a person having ordinary skill in the art to make and use the invention when combined with information and knowledge available to the person having ordinary skill in the art.
