A Cap To Cover An Open End Of A Conduit In A Pump

Abstract: A cap 110 to cover an open end 204 of the conduit 102 in the pump 100 is provided. The cap 110 comprising a vent 112. The vent 112 enables evacuation of air from the conduit 102 while covering the cap 110 over the open end 204 of the conduit 102. The vent 112 is referred to as first vent 112. The cap 110 provides easy assembly and disassembly. The design of the cap 110 prevents any self-loosening around the conduit 102. Further, the air lock between the cap 110 and the conduit 102 is eliminated.

, Description:Complete Specification:
The following specification describes and ascertains the nature of this invention and the manner in which it is to be performed:

Field of the invention:
[0001] The present invention relates to a cap to cover an open end of a conduit in a pump.

Background of the invention:
[0002] A pump such as a three-cylinder radial plunger high pressure pump is offered for 1600 to 1800 bar application. The pump comprises interfaces like an inlet conduit, a High Pressure (HP) connector, a backflow conduit, ZME, etc. which need to be covered by a protection cap while it is transported/shipped to a customer end. The protection caps avoids the entry of foreign particles and water inside the pumps through the interfaces. The protection cap also prevents damage of interface surface during transportation. The protection cap is applicable to all other variants of pumps.
[0003] The existing protection caps fail to avoid entry of foreign particles and water into the pump components. The protection caps offer difficulty in assembling and disassembling due to vacuum effect.

Brief description of the accompanying drawings:
[0004] An embodiment of the disclosure is described with reference to the following accompanying drawing,
[0005] Fig. 1 illustrates a pump with open conduit covered with a cap, according to an embodiment of the present invention, and
[0006] Fig. 2 illustrates the cap with a first vent, according to an embodiment of the present invention, and
[0007] Fig. 3 illustrates the cap with a second vent, according to an embodiment of the present invention;

Detailed description of the embodiments:
Fig. 1 illustrates a pump with open conduit covered with a cap, according to an embodiment of the present invention. The pump 100 is shown as an example and must not be limited thereto. The pump 100 comprises many open conduits 102 such as an inlet conduit 106, a High Pressure (HP) connector (not shown), a backflow conduit 108, etc. A shaft 104 is shown. A cap 110 to cover an open end 204 (shown in Fig. 2) of the conduit 102 in the pump 100 is provided. The cap 110 comprises a vent. The vent enables evacuation of air from the conduit 102 while covering the cap 110 over the open end 204 of the conduit 102. The conduit 102 is also referred to as connector which connects to other interfaces such as fuel tank, reservoir, common rail, etc. The cap is 110 is applicable for the shaft 104 as well.

[0008] Fig. 2 illustrates the cap with a first vent, according to an embodiment of the present invention. In the Fig. 2, the pump 100 is omitted, and only the conduit 102 is shown for clarity. Also, Fig. 2 shows a side cut-section view 210 and a perspective view 220 for the assembled cap 110. The vent in Fig. 2 is referred to as a first vent. The first vent is a hole 202 provided on the cap 110. The hole 202 is proximal to a close end of the cap 110.

[0009] Fig. 3 illustrates the cap with a second vent, according to an embodiment of the present invention. The Fig. 3 shows a side cut-section view 310 of the assembled cap 110 and a perspective view 320 of the cap 110. The vent in Fig. 3 is referred to as a second vent, which is a groove 302 running axially along an inner surface of the cap 110. The groove 302 starts from a close end of the cap 110 to the open end of the cap 110.

[0010] Further, a projection 206 is provided inside the cap 110 on the close end of the cap 110. The projection 206 plugs the open end 204 of the conduit 102. While, the cap 110 is being fit over the open end 204 of the conduit 102, air gets trapped inside and between the conduit 102 and the cap 110. The vent enables the evacuation of air, which is provided in the cap 110.

[0011] In an embodiment, the cap 110 comprises protrusions (not shown) on inner side surface 206. The protrusions makes contact with the outer surface of the conduit 102 and grips the open end 204 of the conduit 102. The protrusions are provided in proximity to the open end of the cap 110. The cap 110 is made of plastic. In another embodiment, other material (ex: flexible material) is used to manufacture the cap 110.

[0012] According to an embodiment of the present invention, the present invention mitigates vacuum problem at the open end 204 of the conduit 102. Self-loosening of caps 110 is avoided, which eliminates handling/transportation issue. Also, the design of the cap 110 eliminates a sound generated while disassembling process. Further, due to the cap 110, the open end 204 of the conduit 102 is prevented from getting damaged due to greater disassembly force in some cases, therefore in general reduces the greater assembly and disassembly force.

[0013] It should be understood that embodiments explained in the description above are only illustrative and do not limit the scope of this invention. Many such embodiments and other modifications and changes in the embodiment explained in the description are envisaged. The scope of the invention is only limited by the scope of the claims.
