Specification

Description:A CASING FOR COVERING A VENT HOLE OF AN EGR UNIT OF AN AUTOMOBILE

TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present subject matter in general relates to an exhaust gas circulation (EGR) unit that is mounted on a vehicle and circulates exhaust gas (fluid) to an intake passage. In particular, the present subject matter provides a casing for covering a vent hole that in turn restricts the entry of foreign particles in the EGR unit.

BACKGROUND
[0002] Automotive industry in India is one of the main pillars of the economy. With strong backward and forward linkages, it is a key driver of growth. In addition, automotive industry has always been known to be very competitive as far as its design and material usage are concerned. Therefore, the automotive industry is always facing greater market pressure to develop high quality products more quickly with different variants of a particular vehicle model in order to cater different segments of end users.
[0003] An exhaust gas recirculation unit, or EGR unit in short, is one of the main components of the vehicle’s engine management system. It recirculates finely metered quantities of exhaust gas to the engine intake system for increased engine efficiency, reduced fuel consumption and lower NOx emissions.
[0004] With growing pressures to reduce emissions, the EGR unit will play an increasingly important role in moving forward.
[0005] Nowadays, nearly 80 percent of the air we breathe is nitrogen. However, when it is exposed to the extremely high temperatures in the combustion chamber, plus 1370°C, the normally inert gas becomes reactive, creating harmful oxides of nitrogen or NOx, which are then passed through the exhaust system into the atmosphere.
[0006] In order to minimize this, the EGR unit allows a precise quantity of exhaust gas to re-enter the intake of the system, effectively changing the chemical makeup of the air entering the engine. With less oxygen, the now diluted mixture burns slower, lowering temperatures in the combustion chamber by almost 150°C, and reducing NOx production for a cleaner, more efficient exhaust.
[0007] EGR units in general operate in a hostile environment as there is great chance of entry of foreign particles through a vent hole provided on the EGR unit. This may result in clogging of tubes, exhaust gas channels and eventually the unit’s plunger mechanism, causing it to either stick open or close. This may result in the non-working of the EGR units.
[0008] Due to the non-working of EGR units, lots of problems arises such as
• Engine Performance- If the unit is stuck open, then the vehicle’s air-fuel ratio will be disrupted causing engine performance issues such as reduced power, poor acceleration and rough idle. It may also produce turbo boost pressure leaks, causing the turbo to work harder.
• NOx Emissions- When the EGR unit remains shut, the resultant high temperatures in the combustion chamber will leave a lot of unburned fuel in the exhaust, leading to increased NOx emissions and reduced fuel efficiency.
• Engine knock- the higher temperatures and NOx may also result in increased detonation or knock, heard as knocking noises in the engine.
[0009] In order to overcome these problems, there is a need of a casing that helps in covering a vent hole provided on the EGR unit.

OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
[0010] The primary objective of the present subject matter is to provide a casing that helps in covering a vent hole provided on the EGR unit.
[0011] It is another objective of the present subject matter is to provide the casing that fits over EGR unit in different variants of a particular vehicle model in order to cater different segments of end users.
[0012] It is yet another objective of the present subject matter is to provide the casing that can be attached or detached with the EGR unit as per the requirements.
