TITLE OF THE INVENTION
A clamp and an end shield fitted with said clamp
APPLICANTS :
Crompton Greaves Limited, CG House, Dr Annie Besant Road, Worli, Mumbai 400 030, Maharashtra, India, an Indian Company
INVENTOR (S):
Mettem Navadeep of Crompton Greaves Limited, FHP Commercial Motors
Division, 196-198, Kundaim, Goa - 403115, India; an Indian National.
PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION:
The following specification particularly describes the nature of this invention and the manner in which it is to be performed:

Field of the Invention:
This invention relates to mechanical assemblies.
Particularly, this invention relates to a clamp adapted to be fitted onto an end shield for receiving an Open Current (OC) switch and an end shield fitted with said clamp, thereby.
Background of the Invention:
Motors are assemblies which convert electrical energy to mechanical energy.
Figure 1 illustrates a schematic motor.
The inside air of the motor is circulated from inside of motor to the space (or shell) which houses tubes. The heat of inside air is transferred to the tubes by conduction process the outside air is forced through these tubes by fans (12) mounted on outside portion of the motor. The transfer of heat through these tubes is by process of convection. A stator (14) and rotor (16) is located about a shaft (11) in a motor housing (20).
The two internal fans (18) circulate the internal between rotor and wound stator, while external fan (12) takes surrounding outside air and pushes through the cooling tubes housed in the motor housing. Air guides (24) are provided near the internal fans (18). The external fan (12) is mounted over a fan mounting plate (15) supported by an external fan hub (17). The external fan (12) is located in the fan

casing (17) on the non drive-end and forces the open-circuit air through the cooling tubes of the stator (14) frame. Reference numeral 29 refers to an end ring.
An end shield (26, 27) placed over a bearing (28) forms the lateral enclosure for the motor. The end shields (26, 27) are designed for fitting the bearing assembly (28) and take care for transmitting the static and dynamic load. Depending on the design and the operating conditions, the motors are fitted with grease lubricated rolling element bearings (28). Reference numeral 26 refers to an end shield of the non drive end. Reference numeral 27 refers to a other drive end shield (ODE shield).
There is also provided a flange (30) adapted to allow fixation of the motor with any external customer equipment.
An OC switch needs to be mounted on the ODE shield. According to the prior art, OC switch is being mounted on lugs precasted in end shield. For the ODE to hold OC switch, the entire die for manufacturing such end shields will have to be remade at huge costs.
Therefore, there is a need for a clamping assembly for clamping OC switch on ODE shield.
Objects of the Invention:
An object of the invention is to avoid re-modification of end shield design and end shield die manufacturing.
Another object of the invention is to provide clamping of switch on an end shield.

Summary of the Invention:
According to this invention, there is provided a damp adapted to be fitted onto an end shield for receiving an OC switch, said clamp being a metal plate with its end portions bent to form stepped portions at either end of said metal plate.
According to this invention, there is also provided an end shield with a clamp for receiving an OC switch, said end shield comprises:
a clamp adapted to be fitted onto an end shield for receiving an OC switch, said clamp being a metal plate with its end portions bent to form stepped portions at either end of said metal plate, said clamp fitted in a manner such that the highest pedestal of the metal plate rests onto a portion of the end shield with the steps ascending therefrom on either lateral sides and the lowermost pedestals on said either lateral sides serving as a platform for receiving said switch to be installed on said clamp fitted onto said end shield.
Typically, each of said stepped portions is a two-stepped end portion.
Brief Description of the Accompanying Drawings:
Figure 1 illustrates a schematic of the motor; and
Figure 2 illustrates an end shield with clamping according to the prior art.

The invention will now be described in relation to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 3 illustrates a clamp;
Figure 4 illustrates an ODE shield with the clamp of Figure 3' and
Figure 5 illustrates an ODE shield with the clamp of Figure 3 and a switch mounted on the clamp of Figure 3.
Detailed Description of the Accompanying Drawings:
Figure 1 illustrates a schematic of the motor.
Figure 2 illustrates an end shield with clamping according to the prior art.
An shield is shown by reference numeral 40. The end shield is provide with lugs (42) which are pre-casted and fitted onto the end shield (40) for receiving an OC switch (45). This mounting position is not a conducive mounting position as it projects out of the end shield.
According to this invention, there is provided a clamp adapted to be fitted onto an end shield for receiving an OC switch. According to another embodiment of this invention, there is provided an end shield with a clamp for receiving a switch.
Figure 3 illustrates a clamp (50). Figure 4 illustrates an ODE shield (51) with the clamp (50) of Figure 3. Figure 5 illustrates an ODE shileld (51) with the clamp (50) of Figure 3 and a switch (45) mounted on the clamp (50) of Figure 3.

In accordance with an embodiment of this invention, there is provided a metal plate with its end portions bent to form stepped portions at either end of the metal plate. Typically, two bends of the metal plate are performed to form a two-stepped end portion on either side. This clamp is used in a manner such that the highest pedestal of the metal plate rests onto a portion of the end shield with the steps ascending therefrom on either lateral sides. The lowermost pedestals on both sides serve as a platform for receiving the switch to be installed on the clamp fitted onto the end shield.
The use of multiple stepped end portions is necessary to provide a longer support platform for the switch which is to be mounted as well as to scale the depth of the end shield from where the clamp is mounted.
While this detailed description has disclosed certain specific embodiments of the present invention for illustrative purposes, various modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the following claims, and it is to be distinctly understood that the foregoing descriptive matter is to be interpreted merely as illustrative of the invention and not as a limitation.

We claim,
1. A clamp adapted to be fitted onto an end shield for receiving an OC switch, said clamp being a metal plate with its end portions bent to form stepped portions at either end of said metal plate.
2. A clamp as claimed in claim 1 wherein, each of said stepped portions is a two-stepped end portion.
3. An end shield with a clamp for receiving a switch, said end shield comprising:
a clamp adapted to be fitted onto an end shield for receiving an OC switch, said clamp being a metal plate with its end portions bent to form stepped portions at either end of said metal plate, said clamp fitted in a manner such that the highest pedestal of the metal plate rests onto a portion of the end shield with the steps ascending therefrom on either lateral sides and the lowermost pedestals on said either lateral sides serving as a platform for receiving said switch to be installed on said clamp fitted onto said end shield.
4. An end shield as claimed in claim 1 wherein, each of said stepped portions is a
two-stepped end portion.
