SIYARAM SILK MILLS LIMITED, A COMPANY INCORPORATED UNDER COMPANIES ACT 1956, WHOSE ADDRESS IS H-3/2, MIDC, A-ROAD, TARAPUR, BOISAR, DISTRICT THANE-401 506, MAHARASTRA, INDIA;
THE FOLLOWING SPECIFICATION PARTICULARLY DESCRIBES THE INVENTION AND THE MANNER IN WHICH IT IS TO BE PERFORMED:

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention in general relates to collar stays in a collar, a method for
manufacturing a collar and a collar/shirt thereof.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
When a collared shirt is new, the corners of the collar lay flat and have a crisp appearance. However, after the shirt has been worn, washed and dried one or more times or exposure to humid atmosphere, the comers of the collar may curl up or down or wrinkle forms on the corner of the collar that results in loss in the appearance of shirt which had when it was first purchased. This occurrence can also happen due to natural body postures and neck movements of an individual during the day. Till date several solutions have been developed to solve this problem. Some shirts have button-down collars, which comprise buttons connected to the shirt beneath the collar and buttonholes located in the collar. When the buttons are connected to the buttonholes, the corner of the collar is securely connected to the shirt, thus preventing it from curling or otherwise becoming deformed. Although this solution helps the collar to remain neat and flat, the buttons are visible on the outside of the collar. Additional drawbacks of this solution include the fact that effort must be made to button the collar down, which may be difficult for some people to accomplish, and the possibility that the button will fall off of the shirt. Finding replacement buttons that match can be difficult, especially if the shirt comprises buttons, which are unusual in color or shape. Most importantly, the button-down collar system cannot be easily retrofitted to work with a collared shirt that was not originally manufactured to include it.

To avoid above problem, collar stays are used which are also known as collar bone, stiffener etc which is hereinafter referred to as a stay. Typically, collar stay is a flat and straight strip with smooth coplanar surfaces as shown in Figure 1 having a tapered lower end. Generally, these typical collar stay is located in a cooperating pocket. In some shirt constructions, the cooperating pocket is fixed within the collar to permanently house the collar stay. In other shirt constructions, the pocket is formed such that it can removably receive the collar stay. In such a construction, the collar stay is inserted in the cooperating pocket to extend from the neckline, or in proximity to the neckline, toward the tips of the collar to maintain an unwrinkled and unbended appearance. However, despite the use of collar stays with collars, it is not uncommon, when the garment is worn, for the collar stay to shift position within its cooperating pocket, or slip completely out of its cooperating pocket. Further, these collar stays may bend or refuse to retain original shape. These collar stays generally stabilize the collar in one direction and area covered by these stays are also minimum.
Hence there is need of a shirt collar stay that is simple to use and can be used on any collared shirt, without significantly modifying the shirt. This collar stay can display a design or message on the outside of a collar, or be hidden beneath the collar flap. Whether used on the inside or outside of the collar, the stay must be capable of securely holding the collar in place to create a neat appearance.

A collar stay (100) in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention is
illustrated in Figure 2. The collar stay (100) includes two thin legs namely first leg (110)
and second leg (120) merging to form a V shaped body. According to the present
invention one (110) of the legs (110, 120) is adapted parallel with the selvedge of the
collar. The leg adapted parallel to the selvedge of the collar is referred herein below as
stitching leg and the other leg is referred as Free leg .
According to the present invention, the legs (110, 120) make a predetermined angle '6'.
The angle '6' between the legs of the collar stay depends upon the dimensions and style
of the collar. Advantageously, the angle is between 30-45°. The more preferable angle is
37°.
According to the present invention, the width of each leg depends upon the design and
dimensions of the collar. Preferably, the width (W1)of the stitching leg is less than the
width (W2) of free leg. Alternatively, the width (W1) of the stitching leg can be equal or
more than that of the free leg.
Another embodiment of a collar stay (200) having a stitching leg (210) and a free leg

(220) comprises an extended protrusions (215) for stitching between the collar.
According to the present invention, length of the both legs (110, 120; 210, 220) may be
same. Advantageously, the length of the stitching leg (110; 210) can be less than the
free leg (120; 220). The length of the stitching leg depends upon the length of the
stitched and/or length of the collar edge to be stitched with the leg.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the free end of each leg (110, 120;

210, 220) of the collar stay is preferably rounded.
According to the preset invention, a slip resistant member may be disposed over either
surface of the legs of the stay.
According to the present invention, the collar stay can be formed from a material
including metals, stainless steels, plastic, woven hard fabric materials, a thick paper
stock material etc.
Figures 4-6 show a portion of the collars (300, 400, 500) manufactured by the various
methods of the present invention.
The collar (300, 400, 500) for a shirt comprises a sewing edge (314, 414, 514) adapted
to be attached to the shirt, a finished edge (318, 418, 518), two selvedges (316, 416,
416), and a collar stay (100, 200) of the present invention is disposed in the each
selvedges (316, 416, 416). The stitching leg of collar stay can be adapted removably or
permanently parallel with the selvedge of the collar.
Referring to Figure 4 and 5 shows a portion of the collar (300,400) manufactured by
stitching method in accordance to one embodiment of the present invention and
illustrates the insertion of collar stay.
As shown in Figure 4, firstly finished edge (318) of the collar (300) is stitched and the V-
section of the collar stay (100) shown in Figure 2 is inserted in such a way that the
stitching leg (110) of collar stay (100) is parallel to the selvedge (316) of collar (300)
overlapping stitching area (not shown) of the selvedge of collar and then the selvedge
(316) is stitched along with the stitching leg (110) of collar stay (100) to form a collar
(300) according to the present invention. The stitching is shown by reference number
312.

As shown in Figure 5, firstly finished edge (418) of collar (400) is stitched and the V-
section of the collar stay (200) shown in Figure 2 is inserted in such a way that the
stitching leg (210) of collar stay is parallel to the selvedge (416) of the collar and allowing
overlapping of the protrusion (215) of the collar stay (200) in stitching area (not shown)
of the selvedge (416) of collar and then the selvedge (416) is stitched along with the
protrusion (215) provided on the stitching leg (210) of collar stay (200) to form a collar
(400) according to the present invention. The stitching is shown by reference number
412.
As shown in Figure 6, a V-shaped pocket (520) is formed with a bottom closed by the
finished edge at each of two selvedges (516) and the V-section of the collar stay (100)
shown in Figure 2 is inserted in such a way that the both legs (210, 220) of collar stay
are parallel to two side of the pocket (520) to form a collar (500). The collar stay is easily
removable from the collar pocket, if necessary. Removal of collar stay is achieved by
holding the collar stay and then withdrawing the collar stay from the pocket.
As the collar stay of the present invention is stitched / adhered to the collar, the collar
stay remains at its place providing a crispier look than a normal collar after repeated
washes. Further, the color point /tip of the collar won't curl after wearing the shirt.
The nouns "stitching leg" and "free leg" are referred throughout the specification for
understanding the invention and do not limit the invention to exact meaning of the noun
for example stitching leg mentioned in the specification is not required to be stitched
when collar stay is used as a removable collar stay.
Other embodiments of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from
consideration of the specification and practice of the invention disclosed herein. It is

intended that the specification and examples be considered as exemplary only and that the invention be only defined in the appended claims.
