, Description:Field of the invention
[0001] This invention relates to the field diesel fuel injection system for a two wheeler.

Background of the invention
[0002] Diesel engines for two wheelers are known in the art. However, the use of diesel engines are limited, as the size/ overall dimension of a two wheeler is limited. One another aspect that poses a problem in the use of diesel engines for two wheelers is high pressure leakage. This high pressure leakage also leads to safety issues, as there are chances of damage happening to the rail used in supplying fuel to the diesel engines. Hence, for two wheelers employing diesel engines, there is a need to protect damage to rail and other components of the fuel injection system, during high pressure operating condition.

[0003] Technical know-how for diesel engines in case of a two wheeler are known in the art. However, since two wheelers have constraints in terms of amount of space that an engine can occupy, the use of diesel engines in two wheelers is not common unlike the use of gasoline engines in two wheeler. However, if the existing diesel engines can be made compact enough without compromising on the safety related issues, then the use of diesel engines in two wheeler would present a better value proposition.

Brief description of the accompanying drawing
[0004] Different modes of the invention are disclosed in detail in the description and illustrated in the accompanying drawing:
[0005] FIG. 1 illustrates a common rail diesel fuel injection system for a two wheeler.
Detailed description of the embodiments
[0006] FIG. 1 illustrates a common rail diesel fuel injection system 100 for a two wheeler. The common rail diesel fuel injection system 100, comprises at least a fuel tank 102 in flow communication with a high pressure pump 104. At least one injector 106 in flow communication with the high pressure pump 104 through a pipe 108, the injector 106 is mounted on the cylinder head 110 of the engine. A shield 112 encloses at least a part of the outlet of the high pressure pump 104, and at least one frame 114 of the two wheeler is in engagement with the shield 112. The frame 114 is adapted to enclose the pipe 108 originating from the outlet of the high pressure pump 104 and ending into the inlet of said injector 106.

[0007] The constructional details for adapting a common rail diesel fuel injection system 100 in a two wheeler will be described in further detail. A two wheeler comprises at least a frame 114, the frame 114 defines the overall structure of the two wheeler and also provides stability and balance to the rider. A part of the frame 114 also supports the fuel tank 102. The flow of fuel from the fuel tank 102 to the high pressure pump 104 will be by the action of gravity. The high pressure pump 104 has an inlet to receive fuel from the fuel tank 102 and an outlet. A part of the outlet of the high pressure pump 104 is enclosed by a shield. The shield 112 has a prolongation that enables engagement with the frame 114. The frame 114 is adapted to enclose the pipe 108 originating from the outlet of the high pressure pump (104) and ending into the inlet of the injector 106. Hence, in the proposed common rail diesel fuel injection system 100, the frame 114 also supports the pipe 108. The frame 114 may be partially open along the length. This may be required for ease of assembling of the pipe 108 within the frame 114, and also during repair and maintenance. A cover plate can be used to cover the partial opening. Alternately, the partial opening can be closed permanently through welding or any other permanent joining process.

[0008] The working of diesel fuel injection system 100 for a two wheeler is now explained in further detail. The two wheeler disclosed herein, employs a gravity fed fuel injection system 100. Fuel, from the fuel tank 102 flows to the high pressure pump 104 by action of gravity. The high pressure pump 104 is integrated in the crankcase, where it is driven by the crankshaft. Pressurized fuel from the high pressure pump 104, will now flow through the pipe 108. The frame 114 of the two wheeler, encloses the pipe 108. By doing so, the frame 114, in addition to providing balance and support to the two wheeler, also protects the pipe 108 connecting the high pressure pump 104 and the injector 106. As a result, any problem in the injector 106, like high pressure leakage, malfunction, etc, the frame 114 of the two wheeler ensures that there is no damage to the pipe 108 or the components of the high pressure pump 104. Since the size of a two wheeler is small in comparison to a four wheeler, by incorporating the frame 114 in the common rail diesel system to support the pipe 108, the safety related issues due to high pressure leakage and the subsequent damage caused to the components of the high pressure pump 104 can be avoided.

[0009] By adapting the diesel engine as mentioned above, it is possible incorporate the benefits of diesel engine, like high power, torque, etc. in a two wheeler. Also, since the existing frame 114 of the two wheeler also supports the pipe in the common rail diesel fuel injection system 100, the diesel engine can be made of occupy a lesser amount of space, hence making the use of diesel engines in two wheeler, compact. The frame 114 also protects the pipe 108, from high pressure leakage encountered in common rail systems 100 using diesel. Also, the frame 114, can be suitably adapted irrespective of number of injectors 106 used in the common rail diesel fuel injection system 100.

[00010] It should be understood that embodiments explained in the description above are only illustrative and do not limit the scope of this invention in terms of the type of two wheeler used and the profile, geometry and material of the frame. Many such embodiments and other modifications and changes in the embodiment explained in the description are envisaged. The scope of the invention is only limited by the scope of the claims.
