Specification

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a common single device to determine the
efficiency of different categories of non-destructive test methods.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The prior art non-destructive test methods used in fabrication industry are
generally categorized as (a), penetrant test (b) Magnetic particle test, (c)
Radiography test, and (d) Ultrasonic test. Each category of NDT method has
variable capacities in terms of detectability of defects. It is an usual practice to
use an artificial defect of known dimensions as a datum reference and compare
the efficiency of a particular type of NDT method. One of the steps in NDT
testing is the setting up of the equipment sensitivity by using an artificial defect
for example, aft welding defect in groove/through holes/wires/flat bottom
hole/side drilled hole / notches of specific dimensions, which are also
recommended by the code / standard for the product. Artificial defects provide
an initial and starting data to set the sensitivity of the equipment. If the test
method is not able to detect a specific artificial defect, artificial defects of various
dimensions has to be prepared and tested to find out the actual capability of
each and every test method individually.
US 6723185 Bl describes a method for producing controlled cracks by thermal
fatigue in a localized area and when it is used to qualify NDT procedure, it is
used as reference only.
US2002/0116084A1 describes a method and system for quantitatively qualifying
and controlling NDT test processes in the areas of personnel qualification,
process audits, reliability testing of inspection technique.
Patent (RO 119569B1) describes a method for obtaining an image quality
indicator to estimate relative sensitivity of radiographic image. JP 8254600A
describes a method of assessing image quality of radiography test, by exposing
the combination of a screen and a step wedge of known dimensions, to X-rays.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore and object of the invention to propose, a common single device to
determine the efficiency of different categories of non-destructive test methods.
Another object of the invention is to propose a common single device to
determine the efficiency of different categories of non-destructive test methods,
which is enabled to determine the efficiency of a NDT test based on a range of
artificial defects.
A further object of the invention is to propose a common single device to
determine the efficiency of different categories of non-destructive test methods,
the determined parameters being used as a reference for subsequent sensitivity
setting of the NDT-equipment.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from
the ensuring description.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Accordingly there is provided common single device to determine the efficiency
of different categories of non-destructive test methods, comprising common
single block having two members to accommodate a testable job, the two
members being weldably joined in an end-to-end relationship to allow a variable
weld-penetration ranging from zero to full, said two members are formed of
material identical to that of the testable job, a gap developed between the ends
of the members in a no weld area, from the shrinkage force generated during
the welding process varies between a minimum and maximum range of artificial
defects enabling correctly determine the efficiency of each category of NDT-test.
The present invention allows to assess the efficiency of detection of a range of
defects within minimum and maximum dimensions of the defect.
The present invention assesses the capability of detection of NDT test itself.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
At the outset of the description, which follows, it is to be understood that the
ensuring description only illustrates a particular form of this invention. However,
such a particular form is only an exemplary embodiment and the teaching of the
invention is not intended to be taken restrictively.
Figure 1 - shows an embodiment of the device according to the invention.
Figure 2 - shows the device of Figure-1 indicating artificial defects.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE
INVENTION
As shown in figure-1, the device comprises a single block (1) produced of two
members (2) and (3) of material identical to that of the job material. Members
are rigidly fixed end to end sot that the weld penetration varies from zero to full
(4,5,6). Due to generation of shrinkage force during welding, the gap between
the two members in the no-weld area (6) varies between minimum to maximum.
The device can be manufactured such as the two surfaces in contact before
welding a) can be of required shape, b) size, c) required surface finish, d)
required material, e) required metallurgical conditions, f) surface of the actual
defect or can have an actual defect itself sot-that the testing will truly assess the
defect size and nature. The device material has the same heat treatment and
metallurgical and other properties affecting NDT test as that of the job (not
shown) under test.
This device is tested with NDT test as applicable for the job. This device
produces the test result showing the capability of the applied NDT.
WE CLAIM

testable job,
characterized in that a gap developed between the ends of the members
(2,3) in a no weld area (6), from the shrinkage force generated during the
welding process varies between a minimum and maximum range of
artificial defects enabling correctly determine the efficiency of each
category of NDT-test.
2. A common single device to determine the efficiency of different categories
of non-destructive test methods as substantially described and illustrated
herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
