Specification

FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention i s , directed to a compact cable adjuster assembly for
transmission cables (MT cables) of vehicle.
BACKGROUPJD/PRIOR ART
The manual .transmission shift & select cable (1 and 2) (MT cable) is the
integral part of the gear actuation system which is connected to transmission
(T)at one end and the gear shifter lever assembly (GSLA) at other end as shown
in fig. 1. Its purpose is to act as interface between GSLA and the gear box
which enables driver to shift the gears. It also contributes towards the overall
shift efforts requirements. In the currenC system, quick adjuster (3) is
connected to the select cable (2) through eye end rod (4) as in figure 2
[indicating select lever (6) and select lever pin (7)] wherein the adjuster is
overmolded onto the eye end rod. Thus, the adjuster assembly comprises the
eye end rod (4) having plastic molded threads which engages with the
corresponding threads of a child part (5) of the adjuster. The child part is a C-
-s-,i- btion integrated with multiple threads in its internal surface. Locking of botn
the parts is followed by arresting movement of the child part by means of a
locking clip (6'). .
in addition to the above, for the adjustment of cable'length in both directions
as in fig. 2, a hollow space (H) is provided in proximity to the child part.
Here, the disadvantage is that, the adjuster is elongated constituting a bulky
. .
structure so as to accommodate the assembly of'locking mechanism (locking of
eye end rod with child part of adjuster) and sliding movement of rod there
inside for adjustment of cable length. Further, there is provision of a hole.(L)

assembly (GSLA).
The quick adjuster adjusts length of the cable by locking the external threads
of rod with internal threads of the adjuster at the desired position with the help
of the locking clip, thus ensuring the correct length of cable for compensating
the manufacturing variations.
In the current arrangement, quick adjuster is in free condition at the time of
cable delivery such that it .can move in the directions as shown in the figure. To
lock the quick adjuster, the locking bush is pushed inside and clip is moved in I
the direction as shown in the figure. 2. This helps in maintaining the gear

shifter knob position at neutral position and thus avoids the shifting problem I

by maintaining equal stroke in both directions
Another patent is,also available in the market with the Patent Application No.
CN 10351 1439 following the same concept as disclosed in the above, however I with different design of the eye end adjuster.
However, the above discussed known systems involve the following drawbacks:
. - The quick adjuster adds significant extra cost to the cable.
- Complex structure and operation of the quick adjuster causes increzsed .
assembly time during vehicle build.
- The quick adjuster acts as the weakest link in the cable and therefore
limits the cables operating load range. I
- The eye end can't be commonized for different models, which gives rise to
need of a new tool for adjuster molding as per the requirements of
various models.
A Chinese Patent relating to field of invention is discussed below:-

for an automobile. The adjustable gear shifting cable joint comprises a.
displacement cable ear ring joint and a displacement cable worm, wherein one
end of the displacement'cable ear ring joint is connected with a displacement
pin of a gear shifting handle and fixed by an elastic clamp, while the other end
is provided with an external thread; one end of the displacement cable worm is
provided with an internal thread and connected with the external thread at the
.
other end of the displacement cable ear ring jaint, while the other end.is fixedly
connected with the core wire of the displacement cable. During assembly, the
ear ring joint is rotated to be adjusted to a proper position on the worm and
then is arranged in the displacement pin and is fixed by the elastic clamp so as
to finish the adjustment.
.in. this patent, the external threads of eye end are locked with internal threads
of eye end rod with the use of a locking pin to lock the select cable. This
structure is somewhat complex and expensive.

present invention.
DETAIL DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION WITH REFERENCE TO THE
ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
The invention. is directed to a compact cable adjuster assembly' for
transmission cables (MT cables) of vehicle.
The cable adjuster assembly. comprises a specially designed eye end rod and
adjuster. In this regard, reference may be made to fig. 3 in which the cable
adjuster assembly (1) is having an eye end rod (2) engaged with eye end
adjuster. (3).
i
i
The rod (2) is integrated with a plurality of threads on the outer surface therecf
at one end for engagement with the corresponding threads of the adjuster (3).
The integration of the threads on the rod itself avoids plastic molding unlike I
I P Q D E L M I X 7 - 0 3 - 2 8 P 5 1%:4B
The adjuster (3) as illustrated in fig. 3 comprising a compact structure as
compared to the existing adjuster. In the said adjuster, one end of which forms
a substantially circular member, which is extended and reduced to a bore hole
(HI.) at other end thereof.
The hole (HI) constitutes opening of bore (B) of the adjuster. In the said bore,
the internal surface is integrally provided with multitude threads for locking
with the corresponding threads of the rod.
Thus, the circular member is nearly a flat part and the bore is substantially a I
hollow cylindrical part integrated with each other to form a single piece.
in conjunction with the above, a bush(S) is nscommodated inside the hole (H2)
at the end of the adjuster like in prior art to establish connectivity with gear
shifter lever assembly (GSLA) pin and for tight fitment as well.
The locking between the eye end rod and adjuster is carried out through
rotational movement avoiding sliding movement. This eliminates. the
requirement of extra open space in the adjuster for adjustment of cable length.
Thus, the select cable length adjustment is carried out in both directions
according to thread locking position.
The length of the cable can be adjusted at desired'position by rotating the eye
end followed by locking it into gear shifter.
Once there is positive locking of the eye end with the mating part, there will not
be any further rotational motion in quick adjuster assembly, providing for
sufficient compensation in the process.
The adjuster can be made of metal/plastic without restricting scope of the
invention to the same.
