Abstract: A high pressure fuel pump 10 is described. The high pressure fuel pump 10 comprises a barrel 12, and a plunger 14 adapted to reciprocate within the barrel 12 and deliver pressurized fuel from within the barrel 12 to a fuel injector. A control rod 16 is secured 10 to the barrel 12, the control rod 16 adapted to rotate the barrel 12 to facilitate controlling a quantity of pressurized fuel that is delivered from the high pressure fuel pump 10. A control rod plug 18 is secured to an end of the control rod 16 at its first end portion, the control rod plug 18 adapted to be positioned against a cam 20 at its opposite second end portion to facilitate actuating the control rod 16. The control rod 15 plug 18 is detachably secured to the end of the control rod 16 at its first end portion.
Claims:1. A high pressure fuel pump (10), said high pressure fuel pump (10) comprising:
10 a barrel (12);
a plunger (14) adapted to reciprocate within said barrel (12) and deliver
pressurized fuel from within said barrel (12) to a fuel injector via a fuel delivery
valve;
a control rod (16) secured to said barrel (12), said control rod (16) adapted to
15 rotate said barrel (12) to facilitate controlling a quantity of pressurized fuel that
is delivered from said high pressure fuel pump (10); characterized in that
a control rod plug (18) secured to an end of said control rod (16) at its first end
portion, said control rod plug (18) adapted to be positioned against a cam (20)
at its opposite second end portion to facilitate actuating said control rod (16)
20 due to a rotation of said cam (20), and wherein said control rod plug (18) is
detachably secured to the end of said control rod (16) at its first end portion.
2.The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1 wherein the
opposite second end portion of said control rod plug (18) comprises a
25 substantially parabolic shaped profile, the substantially parabolic shaped
profile of said control rod plug (18) facilitates reducing wear of said control
rod plug (18) due to the rotation of said cam (20) on said control rod plug (18)
due to a larger surface area of contact between said cam (20) and said control
rod plug (18).
3.The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1 wherein said
control rod plug (18) comprises a plurality of screw threads (22) that are
defined on its shank portion (21), the screw threads (22) that 5 are defined on the
shank portion (21) of said control rod plug (18) adapted to mate against a
plurality of screw threads (24) that are defined on said control rod (16) to
facilitate securing said control rod plug (18) to said control rod (16).
4. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1 wherein said
control rod plug (18) comprises a first circular groove (26) and a second
circular groove (28) that are spaced apart from one another and defined on the
shank portion (21) of said control rod plug (18), the first circular groove (26)
and the second circular groove (28) that are spaced apart from one another and
15 defined on the shank portion (21) of said control rod plug (18) adapted to mate
against a first projection (30) and a second projection (32) that are spaced apart
from one another and defined on said control rod (16) to facilitate securing said
control rod plug (18) to said control rod (16).
5.The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1 wherein said
control rod plug (18) comprises a pin shaped projection (34) extending from a
shank portion (21) of said control rod plug (18), the pin shaped projection (34)
extending from the shank portion (21) of said control rod plug (18) adapted to
be inserted within an L-shaped socket (36) and rotated therein to facilitate
25 securing said control rod plug (18) to said control rod (16).
6.The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1 wherein said
control rod plug (18) comprises a first circular groove (38) defined on the
shank portion (21) of said control rod plug (18), the first circular groove (38)
30 defined on the shank portion (21) of said control rod plug (18) adapted to mate
against a circlip (40) defined on said control rod (16) to facilitate securing said
control rod plug (18) to said control rod (16). , Description:A high pressure fuel pump 10 is described. The high pressure fuel pump 10 comprises
a barrel 12, and a plunger 14 adapted to reciprocate within the barrel 12 and deliver
pressurized fuel from within the barrel 12 to a fuel injector. A control rod 16 is secured
10 to the barrel 12, the control rod 16 adapted to rotate the barrel 12 to facilitate
controlling a quantity of pressurized fuel that is delivered from the high pressure fuel
pump 10. A control rod plug 18 is secured to an end of the control rod 16 at its first
end portion, the control rod plug 18 adapted to be positioned against a cam 20 at its
opposite second end portion to facilitate actuating the control rod 16. The control rod
15 plug 18 is detachably secured to the end of the control rod 16 at its first end portion.
