Abstract: The controller 110 is characterized by, adapted to supply/apply voltage to each pair of phase winding of an Electric Machine (EM) 114 of the vehicle (not shown), measure characteristic parameters of the battery 112 corresponding to each pair of the phase windings, and determine health of the battery 112 based on the comparison of the characteristic parameters with respective threshold values. The controller 110 is also referred to as Engine Management System (EMS) of the vehicle 100. The characteristic parameter is selected from a voltage drop in the battery 112 corresponding to each phase winding of the EM 114 and time duration for voltage saturation. The solution uses no external sensors and provides an economical solution.
Claims:1. A controller (110) to determine health of a battery (112) in a vehicle,
characterized by, said controller (110) adapted to:
supply voltage to each pair of phase winding of an Electric Machine
(EM) (114) 5 of said vehicle;
measure characteristic parameters of said battery (112)
corresponding to each pair of said phase windings, and
determine health of the battery (112) based on said comparison of
said characteristic parameters with respective threshold values.
2. The controller (110) as claimed in claim 1, wherein a set of predetermined
conditions of said vehicle are verified before said determination of health of
said battery (112) is initiated.
3. The controller (110) as claimed in claim 1, wherein said characteristic
parameter is selected from a group comprising a voltage drop in said battery
(112) and time duration for voltage saturation.
4. The controller (110) as claimed in claim 1, wherein said supply voltage is
20 applied in Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal and said characteristic
parameters are measured during said PWM signal.
5. The controller (110) as claimed in claim 1, wherein said EM (114) is
selected from at least one of a drive motor, a starter motor, an alternator and
an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG).
6. A method for determining health of a battery (112) in a vehicle,
characterized by, said method comprises the steps of:
supplying voltage to each pair of phase winding of an Electric
Machine (EM) (114) of said vehicle;
measuring characteristic parameters of said battery (112)
corresponding to each pair of said phase windings, and
determining health of the battery (112) based on said comparison of
said characteristic parameters with respective threshold values.
7. The method as claimed in claim 6, comprises verifying a set of
predetermined conditions before initiating determination of health of said
battery (112).
8. The method as claimed in claim 6, wherein said characteristic feature is
selected from a group comprising a voltage drop in said battery (112) and
time duration for voltage saturation.
9. The method as claimed in claim 6, wherein said supply voltage is applied in
15 Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal and said characteristic parameters
are measured during said PWM signal.
10. The method as claimed in claim 6, wherein said EM (114) is selected from
at least one of a drive motor, a starter motor, an alternator and an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG). , Description:The controller 110 is characterized by, adapted to supply/apply voltage to each pair
of phase winding of an Electric Machine (EM) 114 of the vehicle (not shown),
measure characteristic parameters of the battery 112 corresponding to each pair of
the phase windings, and determine health of the battery 112 based on the
comparison of the characteristic parameters with respective threshold values. The
controller 110 is also referred to as Engine Management System (EMS) of the
vehicle 100. The characteristic parameter is selected from a voltage drop in the
battery 112 corresponding to each phase winding of the EM 114 and time duration
for voltage saturation. The solution uses no external sensors and provides an
economical solution.
