"A Device For Dismantling Of Jammed Fasteners In Turbine Casings By Separating The Studs And Cap Nuts And Then Removing The Cap Nut"

Abstract: The invention relates to a device for dismantling of jammed fasteners in turbine casings by separating the studs and cap nuts and then removing the cap nut, comprising : at least a first and third U-clamp disposed respectively on a base plate and a top portion of the device; the cap nuts being located on the base plate wherein the studs are fitted to the nuts; a hydraulic jack placed at a central portion of the device on a second U-clamp disposed thereon; and the first and third U-clamp on application of pressure via the hydraulic jack are moved in opposite direction such the studs get locked which enables the nuts to be removed in isolation by a box spanner.

Specification

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention generally relates to separating jammed fasteners of
Turbine casings. More particularly the present invention relates to a device for
dismantling jammed fasteners used in Turbine casings.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
At present the problem of fasteners jamming is experienced in the following
areas:
A- Joint Planes of :
a- High Pressure Inner Casing,
b- Intermediate Pressure Inner Casing, and
c- L P Inner Casings.
B- Bends connected with :
a- High Pressure Inner Casing, and
b- Intermediate Pressure Inner Casing.
C- Various Hydraulic Testing apparatuses for:
a- High Pressure outer Casing,
b- Intermediate Pressure Outer Casing, and
c- Bend.
In all the above cases while dismantling the cap nuts, the entire assembly of
nuts and studs comes out as a single unit due to jamming. These Cap nuts can
not be separated from the Studs even after using rust-removing liquids for
example, Kerosene oil, rustin oil and thereafter hammering. Thus further
assembly process is stuck up till replacement of the studs and cap nuts, resulting
in delays. This problem is acute in case of repair of Turbine or dismantling of
fasteners at site.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore, an object of the present invention to propose a device for
separating jammed/seized Cap nuts from the studs, such that only the cap nuts
can be dismantled.
Another object of the present invention is to propose a device for separating
jammed/seized Cap nuts from the studs, such that only the cap nuts can be
dismantled, which eliminates wastage due to jamming of the fasteners (studs
and cap nuts).
Yet another object of the invention is to propose a device for separating
jammed/seized Cap nuts from the studs, such that only the cap nuts can be
dismantled, which reduces the production of cycle time.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
Figure 1 Shows a device for dismantling of jammed fasteners in assembled
condition, according to the invention.
Figure 2 Shows a U type clamp of the device of Figure 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE
INVENTION
Figure 1 shows the device where studs (A) are put in to the T-NUTS (7) of the
bed plate (8). A first U-clamp (1) is put on the bed (8) with a stud (A) in
between. A central portion of the jammed stud (A) is kept on a V-portion of the
first U clamp (1). A second U clamp (2) is placed on the stud (A) as shown in
figure 1.
A hydraulic jack (B) is kept on the second U clamp (2) as shown. A third U
clamp (3) is placed on the jack (B) as shown in figure 1. The whole assembly is
fixed using nuts (5) and washers (6). When the pressure is actuated in the
Hydraulic Jack (B), it pushes the first and third U - clamps (1 and 3) in opposite
direction thereby locking the jammed stud (A).
The cap nut (7) is now removed by using a box spanner (not shown) with impact
force.
WE CLAIM :
1. A device for dismantling of jammed fasteners in turbine casings by
separating the studs and cap nuts and then removing the cap nut,
comprising :
- at least a first and third U-clamp disposed respectively on a base plate
and a top portion of the device; the cap nuts being located on the base
plate wherein the studs are fitted to the nuts;
- a hydraulic jack placed at a central portion of the device on a second U-
clamp disposed thereon; and
- the first and third U-clamp on application of pressure via the hydraulic
jack are moved in opposite direction such the studs get locked which
enables the nuts to be removed in isolation by a box spanner.
2. A device for dismantling of jammed fasteners in turbine casings by
separating the studs and cap nuts and then removing the cap nut as
substantially described and illustrated herein with reference to the
accompanying drawings.

ABSTRACT

The invention relates to a device for dismantling of jammed fasteners in turbine casings by separating the studs and cap nuts and then removing the cap nut, comprising : at least a first and third U-clamp disposed respectively on a base plate and a top portion of the device; the cap nuts being located on the base plate wherein the studs are fitted to the nuts; a
hydraulic jack placed at a central portion of the device on a second U-clamp disposed thereon; and the first and third U-clamp on application of
pressure via the hydraulic jack are moved in opposite direction such the studs get locked which enables the nuts to be removed in isolation by a box spanner.
