Specification

This invention relates to a device for the utilisation of exhaust gas energy of an IC engine including that of an automobile engine, for the purpose of harnessing such energy, which would otherwise be wasted by the discharge of exhaust gases into the atmosphere.
Presently, a substantial portion of the total energy supplied to an IC engine is wasted through the exhaust.
It is therefore an object of this invention to propose device which utilises this energy..
Another object of this invention is to propose a device as aforesaid which needs very little alteration in the automobile engine structure. Such alteration

can be carried out during manufacture without encountering any problems on the assembly line.
Yet another object of this invention is to propose a device as aforesaid which involves a marginal increase in cost of the vehicle. In any event, the

increase in cost is more than compensated by the saving in fuel resulting from utilisation of exhaust gas energy.
Other features of this invention will be apparent from the further description thereof given hereunder.
The device for the utilisation of exhaust gas energy of an IC engine, according to this invention, comprises a gas turbine provided for the said engine, the turbine being enabled, with the engine running, to rotate under the thrust of exhaust gases of the engine impinging on the turbine vanes; an electric generator provided for the engine, said generator being coupled to the said turbine for generating electric power.
This invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings the single Figure in which illustrates, by way of example, and not by way of limitation, one of possible embodiments of this invention.

A gas turbine T is provided for the automobile engine E. When the engine is running with exhaust gases
emerging from the exhaust pipe P, the turbine is
enabled to rotate under the thrust of the exhaust gases impinging on the vanes of the turbine.
An electric generator, such as, for instance, a magneto G is provided for the engine, said generator or being coupled to the said turbine(or generating electric power. The power for the generator is thus obtained by the energy imparted by' the exhaust gases. If, in any given case, such power alone is not sufficient to drive the generator, the power is augmented by power directly supplied by the engine itself whenever the engine is also coupled to the generator.
The inlet of the turbine is, preferably, located adjacent, and in close proximity, to the outlet of the exhaust pipe of the engine. The closer the outlet of the exhaust pipe to the inlet of the turbine, the greater the thrust available to the turbine, by avoiding transmission losses that may be incurred in the travel

of the said gases to the inlet of the turbine. As a matter of fact, the exhaust pipe is preferably made to have a minimum length with this purpose in view.
The electric energy thus generated can be supplied to the ignition system, stored in a battery and used for engine starting and other electrical applications.
It will be appreciated that various other embodiments of tins invention are possible without departing from the scope and ambit of this invention.

We Claim:
1. A device for the utilisation of exhaust gas energy
of an IC engine comprising a gas turbine
provided for the said engine, the turbine being
enabled, with the engine running, to rotate under
the thrust of exhaust gases of the engine
impinging on the vanes of the turbine; an electric
generator pro vided for the engine, said generator
being coupled to the said turbine for generating
electric power
3. A device as claimed in Claim I wherein the inlet of the turbine is located adjacent, and m close proximity, to the outlet of the exhaust pipe of the engine.
4. A device as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the exhaust pipe is of minimum possible length.
5. A device for the utilisation of exhaust gas energy of an IC engine substantially as herein described

with reference to, and as illustrated in, the accompanying drawings.
