Specification

FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a device for transportation and fitting of I-seal Rings in
high pressure outer casing of steam turbines. More particularly, the present invention
relates to a device for transporting and fitting of I-seal Rings to prevent the damage
during assembling in High Pressure Outer Casing, during repairing and dismantling of
High Pressure Steam Turbine and handling from one place to another.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
I-seal Ring is a very accurate component which restricts the radial and axial movement
of high pressure inner casing and high pressure outer casing. Finish machined I-seal
ring is to be lifted and then fitted accurately in precise groove at a depth greater than 2
meters of High pressure outer casing when kept in vertical position. The clearance
between walls of casing and groove is also very less so the I-seal Ring has to be fitted
very carefully. Also finish machined I-seal Ring is to be transported from machining
area to assembly area in shop. So far there was no such device to lift and transport the
I-seal ring as it was just done by lifting ropes with crane which results in damage of I-
seal rings and thus it required the rectifications before assembly. Also during repairing
of steam turbines, I-seal Rings gets damaged while dismantling from high pressure
outer casing as there is no such device to do the same. The cycle time of assembly and
dismantling of I-seal ring was also very high.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
An object of the present invention is to provide a device for transportation and fitting of
I-seal Rings in High Pressure Outer Casing of Steam Turbines which eliminates the
disadvantages of the prior art.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a device for transportation and
fitting of I-seal Rings in High Pressure Outer Casing of Steam Turbines which eliminates
the chances of rectification during assembly.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a device for easy dismantling
of I-seal Ring from High Pressure outer casing.
A further object of the present invention is to have a device which improves the quality
of assembly maintaining all design parameters.
A still further object is to reduce the assembly and fitting time of I-seal Ring in high
pressure Outer and Inner casings.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE
INVENTION
Accordingly, there is provided a device for transportation and fitting of I-seal Rings in
High Pressure Outer Casing of Steam Turbines comprising mainly of:
a) Lower Plate Sub-Assembly (1)
b) Upper Plate Sub-Assembly (2)
c) Bolt (3)
d) Nut (4)
e) Washer (5)
f) Cylindrical Pin (6)
Hg.l (a) shows the device for transportation and fitting of I-seal Rings in High Pressure
Outer Casing. The upper portion B of I-seal Ring is fixed between the collars of Lower
Plate Sub-Assembly (1) and Upper Plate Sub-Assembly (2) and then tightened by Bolt
(3), washer (5) and Nut (4) with hole H3 and HI as shown. This device is fitted at 2
positions diametrically opposite on I-seal Ring and then the Dee shackles (shown in
Fig.3) are assembled with hole H2 at both positions. Then the I-seal Ring can be
transported, lifted with the help of crane and ropes passing through Dee shackles.
Rg.l (b) shows the Lower Plate Sub-Assembly (1) with Lower plate (7) with holes HI
and H2 and 2 numbers of Pipes (8) welded on Lower plate (7) having inner diameter
H4.
Fig.l (c) shows Upper Plate Sub-Assembly (2) with Upper Plate (9) with hole H3 and
Pipe (10) welded on Upper Plate (9) having inner diameter H5.
The Upper Plate Sub-Assembly (2) is fitted on Lower Plate Sub Assembly (1) in such a
way that Pipe (10) of Upper Plate Sub-Assembly (2) is placed between gap G of Pipes
(8) in Lower Plate Sub-Assembly (1). Then the Cylindrical Pin (6) having outer diameter
H6 is press fitted inside the inner diameters H4 of Pipes (8) but there is nominal
allowance between outer diameter H6 of Cylindrical Pin (6) and Inner diameter H5 of
Pipe (10) to provide the rotation to Upper plate assembly (2) about the Cylindrical Pin
(6). This hinged system is provided to easily accommodate the I-seal Rings between
the collars of Upper Plate Sub-assembly (1) and Lower Plate Sub-assembly (2).
Fig.2 shows the layout of all items.
Fig.3 shows the scheme of using the device while lifting the I-seal Ring and fitting in
High Pressure Outer Casing of steam turbine according to present invention. The upper
portion B of I-seal Ring is fitted between the collars of device and then is lifted by crane
and ropes with Dee shackles assembled with devices with hole H2. The lower portion A
of I-seal ring is fitted in the groove C for I-seal ring in High pressure outer casing.
Fig.4 shows the actual assembly of I-seal Ring in grooves of High Pressure outer casing
and High Pressure Inner casing of steam turbine. First the I-seal ring is fitted in High
Pressure Outer casing such that lower portion A of I-seal ring goes into groove C and
then the High Pressure Inner casing is assembled such that upper portion B of I-seal
ring goes inside the corresponding groove in high pressure inner casing.
The device is designed to suitably accommodate all sizes of I-seal rings of all ratings of
steam turbine.
