FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a digital television system with device for
creating special effects from digital still images. More specifically the invention
relates to a digital television and a digital television player for creating special
effects from digital still images by adding visual effects like transition effect,
presentation time of the images, or adding audio like speech / music, etc.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Digital television (DTV) is a new broadcasting technology that transmits, like a
computer, the information used to make the television picture and sound as data
bits. A digital broadcaster can carry more information than is currently possible
with analog broadcast technology. Digital television technology can also be used
to provide interactive video and data services that are not possible with current
analog technology. Digital television devices are capable of displaying still digital
images stored in digital cameras, camcorders, universal serial bus (USB) storage,
or local hard disks by applications available for digital televisions, like media
viewers.

-3-
In PC-based prior art applications like Windows Movie Maker, Sony Vegas and
Microsoft Power Point encoding of the movie file is required to create, edit and
add special effects to movies and playing digital images. However, porting such
an encoder onto existing digital television hardware is a costly and complex
method. Presently digital television analog with universal serial bus (USB)
interface or VCD / DVD players are in use for viewing digital still images on a
large scale. Main reasons for this are availability of large sized screen and / or
non-availability of PC with a common consumer electronic user.
There was therefore, a need for an on demand and immediate special effects
presentation maker and player without switching from the existing digital
television to a PC-based application.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The main object of the present invention is to provide facilities in digital
television devices for editing special effects into digital still images.

-4-
The special effects may be in the form of controlling the display time of each
image on the screen. Or it may contain adding spatial visual effects on each
image by manipulating intensity, colors, luma, and chroma parameters. It may
also be adding transition effect between images.
The special effect may also contain adding title and credits date and time or
adding audio.
Another object of the present invention is to play a sequence of digital still
images with these special images edited into them.
Yet another object of the invention is to access data like titles and credits, dates
and time, place, or other media data (text, audio-visual) already attached with
the digital images for making a movie.
The titles and credits, and data and time can be added. Audio can also be added
through microphone or from audio file stored locally or supported storage
devices.

-5-
The special effects described above are provided by the system of the present
invention by creating an un-disclosed format (UDF) profile during runtime, which
can store an entire sequence and identifiers of adding special effects.
The created sequence of images with special effects can be played in the DTV or
a media viewer of the system of the present invention. Once the playing of
sequence of images with the special effects is completed the UDF profile can be
deleted from the temporary memory. The user however, has the option of
storing the profile for future viewing of the created sequence of images with
special effects. The un-disclosed format (UDF) profile will be compatible only for
the digital televisions of the system of the present invention for which it has
been developed.
Thus the user can create in the digital television an effective presentation of
digital still images for playing like a movie on the media player of the system
without the need for the use of an encoder. The user can select the number of
digital still photographs used, the visual special effects, transitions and adding
music / speech for the created movie and play it on the digital television. The
user can also store and replay it on a media player of the system.

-6-
The present invention removes the need of movie encoder to be ported on
existing digital television hardware. This way, the invention develops techno-
economical solution for movie like presentation of sequence of still digital
images. User can directly plug in their USB, CD / DVD, digital cameras,
camcorders or any digital television supported storage device to the digital
television of the present invention and can convert sequence of images into a
special effects edited presentation which can be played on the digital televisions
of the present invention. The user can distribute the presentation profile with
selected still digital images across multiple media viewers and players along with
digital televisions of the present invention and can replay the special effects
presentation. The system of the present invention converts traditional media
viewers available for digital televisions into effective media editors. The system
of the present invention removes the need of separate hardware to be attached
to digital television device for development of such application. The system of
present invention also has inbuilt default profiles (in UDF) which user can apply
to sequence of images. These inbuilt profiles contain visual effects in original
image format, built transition effects, and audio clips.

-7-
By utilizing a remote control device a MENU item can be configured for special
effects editing, selecting images, adding image effects, transitions, time control,
adding music / speech, and playing, storing, or distributing the presentation.
MENU item will also be configured for adding default (or inbuilt) special effects
profile for creating such presentations on a single shot.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The system of the present invention is capable of creating and editing special
effects for sequence of still digital images and playing, storing, and distributing
the presentation. Special effects presentation can be played back in compatible
media viewers and players. Following raw data is taken as input for creating and
playing the special effects presentation on sequence of still digital images:

-9-
- Digital still images in row format (RGB format) fetched into DTV device
through any DTV supported media storage.
- Visual effects for each still image (optional, default is image in its original
form).
- Transition effects while transiting from one image to another (optional,
default is simple transition and appear the next image).
- Presentation time for each image (optional, default is 3 seconds).
- Music or speech (optional, no default).
- In case of speech, user needs to narrate using microphone.
- In case of music, user should have music files stored on local DTV storage
or USB storage.
- Titles and credits, date and time, place watermarks, or any other media
(text-audio-visual) data attached with the digital still images.
In the present invention the purpose is not to encode the images into a standard
video file format like MPEG-x, WMV, AVI etc. but to provide a specialized format
in which a collection of images (from external and internal memory sources) and
effects (visual and transition) titles and credits, audio file links, and presentation

time for each image which they are played with are stored. Visual effects and
transition effects will be developed in separate modules. Modules in which visual
and transition effects are coded will be called as per their IDs stored in the
profile. Audio will be stored on the local digital television storage and memory
address for the local storage will be passed on and stored in the profile. Titles
and credits image will be created separately and stored on the local digital
television storage and memory address for the local storage will be passed on
and stored in the profile.
The profile format in which this sequence and effects are stored is compatible
with digital televisions and media players of the present invention. The profile
can be distributed across multiple viewers of such media players for local storage
and replay. The user can add / edit the effects by editing this script file using a
remote control device, however, script file will always be hidden to the user. The
special effects presentation "create and play" modules will be ported into digital
