5 FIELD OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
The present invention relates to a flatcon shell metal drum component
having dumbbell shaped edges (100). The present invention also relates
to an apparatus for manufacturing a flatcon shell metal drum component
having dumbbell shaped edges (100) and a method for manufacturing a
10 flatcon shell metal drum component having dumbbell shaped edges
(100). The said flatcon shell metal drum component having dumbbell
shaped edges (100) enables shipping of drum parts in dis-assembled
condition and reassembling them at a location required, whereby solving
the problem of shipping empty drums or barrels in bulk while saving
15 huge shipping costs by optimizing effective use of transport space.
BACKGROUND OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
Metal or steel drums or containers in the volume size of 150L to 280L are
used for the storage and transportation of semi-solid or liquid. In most of
20 the cases, the transportation of Containers, such as steel/metal drums,
is regularly done on a large scale through sea-shipping or through road
transport. There are mainly three components used in the manufacturing
of closed empty drum or container. First is the middle drum component
which is a circular or round body hollow shell; the second component is a
25 lid to close the top portion of the middle drum component; and the third
component is a bottom portion which is affixed tightly to the bottom of
the middle drum component and ensures leakage proof fixation.
Containers such as metal or steel drums are generally manufactured by
affixing or seaming top and bottom components to a drum shell
30 component or body with the resulting assembled drum and shipped as
an empty container to user location. Empty containers such as metal or
steel drums are expensive to transport because of the space which they
consume. Thus, the cost of metal or steel drums can be high if they are
manufactured and shipped empty from a remote site to be filled. Further,
35 the transportation of assembled drums involves substantial freight
Page 3 of 20
5 charges due to the void volume of the empty containers and thus involves
huge shipping costs in transportation.
There are several references available who have attempted in providing
the solution for metal or steel drum transportation by changing the shape
10 of the cylindrical or tubular shell component.
US4413400A has disclosed a novel apparatus and process for nesting a
plurality of drum bodies or shells of deformable material wherein a
cylindrically-shaped drum body is subjected to a force in a plane
substantially parallel to the axis of the drum body to deform the drum
15 body to the extent necessary to permit the positioning of a second drum
body about the initially deformed drum body whereupon the deforming
procedure is repeated for the nested first and second drum bodies, and is
thereafter again repeated until a desired number of drum shells are
contained in the resulting nested assembled of drum bodies or shells.
20 The invention allows easy reassembly of the components unlike in the
earlier system where either shell is de-nested manually which creates
safety hazards and also risks coating scratches or with complicated denesting automation. The invention also incorporates use of multiple types
of paints namely Polyurethane, Polyester, clear top coat topcoat lacquer
25 and combination of others linings inside of a drum body for a single
drum body to address the issue of paint peeling while seaming (Joining
top and bottom lids to a drum body) as well as rusting while being as
high seas for prolonged amount of time subject to high moisture added
with salt alkali.
30 US2006277742A1 has disclosed a method of manufacturing the body of
drum kit, the said method includes the steps of rolling a flat, unpainted
metal sheet (10) to a cylindrical form (12) and welding free edges (14) of
the form to produce a cylindrical body (18). This body is temporarily
stiffened and paint is applied to the exterior of the temporarily stiffened
Page 4 of 20
5 body. Thereafter the body is de-stiffened before it is deformed to a
suitable shape for nesting with other such bodies.
In the prior art technologies, sirco drum technology is used for producing
metal or steel drums. In case of the so-called Sirco drum, to produce
drum kits having three separate components, namely a tubular body, a
10 top end and a bottom end. The kits are supplied to the customer who
then assembles the drums as required.
A problem which arises in the use of the Sirco system is that the weld is
unsightly and destroys the continuity of the originally applied paintwork,
often necessitating a localized touch-up of the paint. This is particularly
15 problematical in situations where the body is painted different colours in
different regions along its length, for instance where a central region of
the body is to be one colour or carries screen-printed markings and end
regions are to be another colour. The end result is invariably unsightly.
In situations where one surface of the initial flat sheet is precoated with a
20 rust inhibitor or other treatment, the further problem which arises is that
the protection provided by the internal coat is discontinuous at the weld,
leading to the possibility of localized internal corrosion in this region if a
subsequent step to coat the weld line is not undertaken.
25 As the demand of metal or steel drums in the volume size of 150L to 280L
is very high and due to multiple disadvantages and problems in
nesting/stacking and transporting metal or steel drums, it is need of an
hour to provide a solution that will overcome the issues regarding
nesting/stacking of multiple drums at a time and transporting metal or
30 steel drums in a safer and convenient manner which further helps in
saving time, labor and money associated in stacking and transporting
metal or steel drums from one location to another location.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
25 The present invention relates to a flatcon shell metal drum component
having dumbbell shaped edges. The present invention also relates to an
apparatus for manufacturing a flatcon shell metal drum component
having dumbbell shaped edges and a process for manufacturing a flatcon
shell metal drum component having dumbbell shaped edges. For the
30 purpose of making a flatcon shell metal drum component having
dumbbell shaped edges, round shell as a middle drum component is
selected from the metal or steel drum having a volume capacity of a drum
shell between 150L to 280L.
5 As per the prior art technologies, there are mainly three components
used in the manufacturing of closed empty drum having a volume
capacity between 150L to 280L.
First is the middle drum component which is a circular or round body
hollow shell; the second component is a lid to close the top portion of the
10 middle drum component; and the third component is a bottom portion
which is affixed tightly to the bottom of the middle drum component and
ensures leakage proof fixation.
Prior art technologies have provided several solutions for transporting
empty drums through sea-route or via road transportation.
15 One is providing closed empty drums with all three components for
transportation purpose.
Second solution is to separately transporting middle drum component in
either round or circular shape or knock-down shape along with top and
bottom components and all three components may be affixed after it
20 reaches to a final destination.
In both the cases, transporting empty drums requires lot of spaces and
involves higher expenses that makes the above solutions commercially
not viable options while transporting the drums from one place to
another.
25 Further, there are higher chances of deterioration or damage of painting
or coating of inner or outer portion of the painted drums if painted drum
components are transported from one place to another.
The present invention is an attempt for providing a concrete solution for
30 above problems in stacking and transporting the drum components
wherein round or circular shaped middle drum component selected from
the metal or steel drum having the volume capacity between 150L to
280L is converted into a flatcon shell metal drum component having
dumbbell shaped edges at both the sides, the flat shaped metal drum
35 component with dumbbell shaped edges of the present invention makes
Page 8 of 20
5 possible of stacking a plurality of drums with dumbbell shaped edges,
one on another or next to each other laying vertically or horizontally.
In the first embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a

for the purpose of converting it into a flatcon shell metal drum
15 component is selected from:
Vertical length: between 800mm to 1090mm
Figure-2(a) shows top view of a flatcon shell metal drum component
having dumbbell shaped edges (100), figure-2(b) shows cut view of drum
component (101a) with dumbbell shaped edges as per the present
20 invention, figure-3 shows front view of a flatcon shell metal drum
component having dumbbell shaped edges (100) and figure-4 shows cut
view of figure-3 showing rolled corner (detailed A) of dumbbell shaped
shell metal drum component as per the present invention.
Referring figure-1 to 4, a flatcon shell metal drum component having
25 dumbbell shaped edges (100) comprises dumbbell shaped edges (101a &
101b) on both the sides having middle portion (102) in a flat shaped
condition.
The flatcon shell metal drum component having dumbbell shaped edges
(100) made from a round shell is having following parameters:
30 Vertical length: between 800mm to 1090mm
Width: 850mm to 920mm
Diameter of dumbbell shaped edges on each size (Detail A): 15mm to
25mm.
5 According to another aspect of the present invention, middle portion
(102) of drum component (100) is flattened together with minimum
possible gap on opposite sides of dumbbell shaped edges to avoid
abrasion facilitating peeling of internal lining along with storing of
maximum possible numbers of drum components in a specified space.
10 This can include nesting or stacking of flat shaped metal drum
components (100) adjacent to each other to optimize the space while
transportation.
In the second embodiment, there is provided an apparatus (200) for
15 manufacturing a flatcon shell metal drum component having dumbbell
shaped edges (100).

invention.
Referring to Figure-5 & 6, there is provided an apparatus (200) for
making flatcon shell with dumbbell shaped edges (100) as per the
30 present invention in which Linear travel assembly (300) is shown.
Referring to figure-5,6, 7 & 8, linear travel assembly (300) comprises a
means for linear guiding force (301) and a linear guide frame (302) for
movement of means for linear guiding force in forward and backward
direction from one end (302a) to another end (302b) between the linear

5 A means for linear guiding force (301) is free to move on linear guide
frame (302) through which the movement of means for linear guiding
force in forward and backward direction from one end (302a) to
another end (302b) between guide frame (302) get enabled.
In the present invention, force is required for making a flatcon shell
10 with dumbbell shaped edges (100) in which the round shell drum
component of a volume capacity selected from 150L to 500mm having
vertical length between 800mm to 1090mm is kept on the pusher
assembly (500), the said pusher assembly (500) is passed through
flattening roller assembly (400) to convert the round shell drum
15 component in to flatcon shell drum component having dumbbell
shaped edges (100). The said force is provided by means for linear
guiding force (301).
A means for linear guiding force (301) may be selected from
commercially available pneumatic or hydraulic actuator, electric
20 actuator or may be a mechanism of providing mechanical force.
In pneumatic linear actuator, the force is created by pressure acting
on the surface area of a piston while in electric actuators, the force is
generated from the torque capability of the motor.
Pneumatic or hydraulic actuators are devices that convert the energy
25 of compressed air or gas into a mechanical motion that regulates one
or more final control elements and an electric actuator is a device that
can create movement of a load, or an action requiring a force, using
an electric motor to create the necessary force.
2. Flattening roller assembly (400):
30 Referring figure-5, 6 & 9, an apparatus (200) for making a flatcon
shell drum component having dumbbell shaped edges (100) has
disclosed flattening roller assembly (400) as a second part.
The said flattening roller assembly (400) comprises 2 flattening rollers
(401a and 401b) vertically placed in a support frame (402) and a
Page 12 of 20
5 support frame (402) affixed to a linear guide frame (302) of linear
travel assembly (300).
Accordingly, 2 flattening rollers (401a and 401b) are aligned in a
support frame (402). Vertical length of both rollers (401a and 401b) is
kept between 950mm to 1100mm while the radius or diameter is kept
10 between 60Ø to 150Ø. A gap (P1) of 14mm to 26mm is kept between
the rollers (401a and 401b) to be able to pass through the flat frame
(501) of pusher assembly (500) between the rollers (401a and 401b).
These 2 rollers (401a and 402b) are made of metal, steel or hard
plastic which can bear the force generated by actuator (301) and
15 making the flattening process of round shell in easy and convenient
manner.
The support frame (402) is affixed to a linear guide frame (302) of
linear travel assembly (300). The said support frame (402) is affixed
through welding it to linear guide frame (302) or optionally, it can be
20 affixed using nuts and bolts as per the user requirement. The said
support frame (402) is affixed in such a way that it can bear the force
generated by an actuator and easily and conveniently allow the
pusher assembly (300) with a round shell drum component to pass
through from the vertically placed flattening rollers (401a and 401b)
25 and thus playing an important role in converting the round shell
drum component in to flatcon shell drum component having
dumbbell shaped edges (100).
Support frame (402) is made of metal or steel and vertical
length/height of the support frame (402) is kept as per the user
30 requirement, preferably vertical length of the support frame (402) is
kept between 1100mm to 1150mm.
3. Pusher assembly (500):
Referring figure-5, 6 & 10, an apparatus (200) for making a flatcon
shell drum component having dumbbell shaped edges (100) has also
35 disclosed a pusher assembly (500) as a third part.
5 Pusher assembly (500) is vertically placed adjacent to flattening roller
assembly (400). There is a gap (P2) of 110mm to 140mm is kept
between the pusher assembly (500) and flattening roller assembly
(400) that will allow to keep the round shell between pusher assembly
(500) and flattening roller assembly (400) for the purpose of flattening
10 the round shell. The said pusher assembly (500) comprises a
vertically placed flat frame (501) having a round shaped metal rod
(502) fixed onto the front edge (501a) of flat frame (501), the said flat
frame (501) is affixed to a guiding roller (503); a guiding roller (503)
affixed to a means for linear guiding force (301) of a linear guiding
15 assembly (300).
A round shaped metal rod (502) is welded on to the front edge (501a)
of flat frame (501) and bottom portion (501b) of flat frame (501) is
affixed to a guiding roller (503) as shown in figure-6. Affixing of a
guiding roller (503) to a flat frame (501) may be done in either ways
20 like (i) upper portion (503a) of the guiding roller (503) is welded to the
bottom portion (501b) of flat frame (500) or (ii) it may optionally be
affixed with the help of bolts and nuts as shown in figure-6 & 10.
Guiding roller (503) is selected from a metal or steel pipe wherein the
upper portion (503a) of guiding roller (503) is affixed to a bottom
25 portion (501b) of a flat frame (501) while the lower portion (503b) of
guiding roller (503) is affixed to a means for linear guiding force (301)
of a linear guiding assembly (300). In the present invention, the
length of guiding roller is dependent on the bottom length of flat
frame and so the length of guiding roller is kept identical to the
30 bottom length of flat frame which is selected between 200mm to
400mm. Affixing of guiding roller (300) to a means for linear guiding
force (301) is done either by welding the lower portion (503b) of
guiding roller (503) directly with the front-top portion (301a) of a
means for linear guiding force (301) or it may be affixed with the use
Page 14 of 20
5 of nuts and bolts. Pusher assembly (500) is made in house as per the
user requirement.
In the present invention, the vertical length/height of flat frame (501)
and round shaped metal rod (502) is kept between 950mm to
1100mm. It is to be noted that the diameter of dumbbell shaped
10 edges (102a and 102b) of flattened shell metal component (100) is
dependent on the diameter or radius of a metal rod (502) so the
diameter or radius of a round shaped metal rod (502) is kept between
5mm to 12.5mm as per the user requirement.
15 A flatcon shell drum component having dumbbell shaped edges (100) is
made as per the user requirement which is dependent on the volume,
size and diameter of the round shell drum component. Round shell
drum having volume capacity between 150L to 280L and vertical Length
between 800mm to 1090mm is used for flatcon shell manufacture
20 purpose. Similarly, an apparatus (200) for making A flatcon shell drum
component having dumbbell shaped edges is also be made as per the
user requirement which is dependent on the volume, size and diameter
of the round shell drum component. All the important parameters,
criteria related to a flatcon shell drum component having dumbbell
25 shaped edges (100) and an apparatus for making a flatcon shell drum
component having dumbbell shaped edges (100) have already been
defined and described in the aforementioned paragraphs.
According to the third embodiment, there is also provided a method for
30 manufacturing a flatcon shell metal drum component having dumbbell
shaped edges using the disclosed apparatus (200). The method of
manufacturing is carried out in three different steps:
Figure-11(A): Step-1 of a method of making flatcon shell drum
component with dumbbell shaped edges using the said apparatus.
5 Figure-11(B): Step-2 of a method of making flatcon shell drum
component with dumbbell shaped edges using the said apparatus.
Figure-11(C): Step-3 of a method of making flatcon shell drum
component with dumbbell shaped edges using the said apparatus.
A general method is provided as under:
10 According to the Figures 11(A) to 11(C), the said apparatus (200) is
useful in making or converting round shell metal drum component to a
flat shell metal drum component having dumbbell shaped edges (100).
Once the round shell is placed between pusher assembly (500) and
flattening roller assembly (400) [Figure-11(A)], Pusher assembly (500)
15 along with the round shell passes through between 2 flattening rollers
(401a and 401b) with the help of a means for linear guiding force (301)
of linear travel assembly (300) [Figure-11(B)] and makes it possible of
converting round shaped shell into a flat shell metal drum component
having dumbbell shaped edges (100) [Figure-11(C)].
20
The present invention makes it possible for nesting/stacking of multiple
drums at a time and transporting metal or steel drums in a safer and
