Specification

DESC:TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present subject matter described herein generally relates to a frame assembly of a vehicle, and particularly but not exclusively relates to a rear frame assembly of the vehicle.

BACKGROUND
[0002] Typically, a frame assembly is the main supporting structure of a vehicle. The frame assembly serves to support different parts of the vehicle. Besides acting as the main supporting structure of the vehicle, the construction of the frame assembly also defines the shape and appeal of the vehicle. The structure and construction of the frame also plays a critical role for the packaging of components of the vehicle.
[0003] Specifically, a rear portion of the vehicle the frame assembly faces durability challenges as it is primarily exposed to occupant pay load in addition to the weight of powertrain, batteries, transmission system, utility box, wiring harness, controllers, fuel storage unit etc. as major vehicle aggregates. A optimally stiff and durable rear frame assembly is necessary to provide a compact vehicle layout and ergonomically comfortable seating to a rider; one which can also accommodate several parts including a wide utility box and a wiring harness.

[0009] Fig.5 illustrates a front view of the utility box and the frame of the vehicle in accordance with an embodiment of the present subject matter.
[00010] Fig.6 illustrates a front sectional view of the utility box and the frame of the vehicle in accordance with an embodiment of the present subject matter.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[00011] The frame assembly forms the core structure of the vehicle. The vehicles include a two wheeled vehicle and a three wheeled vehicle which are typically provided with a frame assembly having a first frame member and a second frame member on a laterally opposite side of the vehicle.
[00012] Typically, the frame assembly provides for seating of the rider and supports several components of the vehicle such as a power unit, a front and rear suspensions, the utility box and several other parts of the vehicle. Over the continuous use of the vehicle for carrying passengers or carrying other forms of load, the frame assembly of the vehicle may witness several changes. These changes include deformation of a portion of the frame assembly or breakage of any joint of the frame assembly. Such changes are often observed in the rear frame assembly which experience any form of impact or continuous application of heavy load.
[00013] The frame assembly undergoes a vertical elastic deformation when the vehicle experiences any additional load than what it was originally designed for. This is a common problem when light weight two wheeled straddle type vehicle is used by more than two persons of heavy weight or when the two wheeled vehicle is used for commercial purposes such as carrying large quantity of milk by mounting big size and heavy weight containers the vehicle. In several rural areas, the additional load is subjected to the frame of the vehicle, especially the sides of the frame of the vehicle to carry farming equipment and farm produce.
[00014] Also, an associated problem witnessed by such vehicles relates to utility space of the vehicle. Conventionally, the utility box is provided between the opposite side frame members of the vehicle. However, such frame assembly compromises the capacity of the utility box because the utility box is mounted to the frame assembly of the vehicle with bulky sized brackets. Conventionally, such brackets are necessary because the frame members of the frame assembly does not have any provision for directly mounting the utility box. Thus, a large weld joint with the frame assembly is provided to attached the mounting bracket. Such brackets occupy the space on either side of the frame assembly which is undesirable. Also, more space occupancy by such brackets causes space constraints for routing of wiring harness near the utility box and the frame members. The width of a straddle type vehicle is typically constrained by the anthropometric considerations of ground reach of the rider and pillion legs as well as ergonomic seating for the users.
[00015] In known arts, the utility space is improved by shifting the position of the fuel tank. However, separate or dedicated mounting brackets are still being used which adversely impacts the compact layout of vehicle, utility box space, part count and weight of the vehicle. Additionally, any extra attached or welded brackets can lead to structural weakness of the frame and its joints arising out of welding heat which tend to adversely impact the durability and reliability of the frame assembly and the vehicle as whole.
[00016] Therefore, there is need to provide an improved frame assembly for the vehicle which is durable and can withstand vertical load from the passenger and the carriage. Also, the vehicle should eliminate bulky sized brackets which are being used to mount the utility box. The purpose behind elimination of such brackets being improving space for the utility box and the nearby components such as the wiring harness.
[00017] In view of the above, it is an object of the present subject matter to provide an improved frame assembly for a vehicle. The frame assembly as per the present invention includes : a first frame member, a second frame member, and a one or more third frame member. The first frame member being disposed on a first lateral side along a lateral axis of the frame assembly. The second frame member being disposed downwards from the first frame member on the first lateral side. The one or more third frame member connecting the first frame member and the second frame member on the first lateral side of the frame assembly, and the one or more third frame member being provided with a mounting portion for mounting a one or more additional components. The advantage of the one or more third frame member is to provide additional support to the frame assembly to prevent sagging and deformation of the frame assembly when excess load is applied. Also, the mounting portion ensures that additional mountings such as the utility box is mounted to the frame assembly directly thereby eliminating the need for extra brackets which occupy a large space and contribute significantly to the weight of the vehicle. The one or more third frame member, being an integral aspect of the frame assembly, ensures that more utility space is available, the frame assembly is more durable, the number of parts are reduced and additional components can be mounted on the frame assembly from either side of the frame assembly. The additional components include carriage mountings holders for carrying heavy containers, utility box etc.
[00018] As per an aspect of the present subject matter, the frame assembly includes a fifth frame member which is being disposed on a second lateral side along the lateral axis of the frame assembly. Also, the frame assembly includes a sixth frame member which is being disposed downwards from said fifth frame member on the second lateral side. The one or more third frame member connects the fifth frame member and the sixth frame member on the second lateral side of the frame assembly and the one or more third frame member being provided with the mounting portion for mounting a one or more additional components.
[00019] Summary provided above explains the basic features of the invention and does not limit the scope of the invention. The nature and further characteristic features of the present subject matter will be made clearer from the following descriptions made with reference to the accompanying drawings.
[00020] The embodiments detailing features of the frame assembly and its construction, in accordance with the present subject matter will be described hereunder with reference to the accompanying drawings.
