A Handle Bar Assembly For A Motor Vehicle

Abstract: A handle bar assembly for a motor vehicle comprising a handle bar tube provided with. a hand grip on either side of the assembly, characterized in that each grip closely surrounds the corresponding handle bar tube in a light push fit, the inner surface of the hand grip being meshed while the outer surface of the handle bar tube is knurled, such that the said surfaces come into tight contractual- engagement with each other, to restrain any relative rotational and linear movements between the said surfaces. Specification

This invention relates to a handle bar assembly for a motor vehicle, more particularly, though not exclusively, for a motor vehicle, such as, a two wheeler, three wheeler and the like, having a handle bar for steering the vehicle.

Such assemblies known to the art comprise a plain-surface handle bar tube and a hand grip provided on either side of the said assembly. The hand grip closely surrounds the handle bar tube in a push fit, whereby the outer surface of the said tube is in contact with the inner surface of the hand grip.

In order to keep the hand grip fixed to the handle bar tube, the known assembly resorts to adhesive bonding between the handle bar tube and the hand grip. This is done by coating the outer surface of the said tube or the inner surface of the hand grip with an adhesive and thereafter curing the bond.

The adhesive bond between the tube and the hand grip is all right so long as it lasts. Once the adhesive bond gives way due to ageing, lack of proper application of the adhesive and general wear and tear, the hand grip is very likely to move around or linearly along, relative to the handle bar tube; and finally even come off the said tube. In any event, failure of the adhesive results in a relative rotational or linear movement between the hand grip and the tube resulting in the hand grip ceasing to perform its intended purpose. The consequences of this detachment can be serious if the fault occurs while the vehicle is in motion, because the rider is highly likely to lose control over the vehicle, involving himself and, possibly, others, in traffic accidents.

It is therefore an object of this invention to propose a handier bar assembly as aforesaid, which dispenses with the need to use adhesives for fixing the hand grip to the tube.

Some of the salient benefits and advantages which accrue from this invention are listed below:

Eliminating the use of adhesive and its attendant cumbersome process.

The faulty detachment of the hand grip from the said tube, which is likely to lead to serious traffic accidents, is no longer a hazardous possibility.

Assembling the hand grip on to the tube according to this invention is a quick and clean operation, unlike the known adhesive-based procedure which is time consuming.

There is substantial saving in cost since the use of adhesives is avoided.

This invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate by way of example, and not by way of limitation, one of possible embodiments of the handle bar assembly proposed herein.

In the drawings,
Fig. 1 illustrates a general assembly of the handle bar assembly
Fig. 2 illustrates the handle bar tube (hand grip not shown) for the left side of the assembly. The said tube is Knurled on its outer surface along its length A.
Fig. 3 illustrates the handle bar tube (hand grip not shown) for the right side of the assembly. The said tube is knurled on its outer surface along its length B.
Fig. 4 separately illustrates the hand grip whose inner surface is meshed.

The embodiment illustrated consists of a handle bar assembly 5. The assembly has a handle bar tube on either side. The handier bar tube 60 on the left hand side of the vehicle has its outer surface 50 knurled over its length A. So also the handier bar tube 90 on the right hand side of the vehicle has its outer surface 80 knurled over its length B.

The assembly also has a hand grip on either side, separately shown as 100. The hand grips, fixed to the handier bar tubes, on the left hand side and the right hand side of the vehicle are shown as 20 and 30 and have each of their inner surfaces at 120 meshed over each of their lengths. The inner surface 120 of the hand grips 20 and 30 have a mesh like pattern formed during the manufacturing process to provide better grip on the handier bar tubes. Each hand grip closely surrounds the corresponding handier bar tube in a tight push fit whereby the outer knurled surfaces 50 and 80 of the said tubes come 'into tight contractual-engagement respectively with the inner surfaces 120 of the hand grip (20 and 30) shown separately as 100. Such engagement restrains any relative rotational and linear movement between the said surfaces.

It will be appreciated that various other embodiments are possible without departing from the scope and ambit of this invention.

We Claim:

1. A handle bar assembly for a motor vehicle comprising a handle bar tube provided with a hand grip on either side of the assembly, characterized in that each hand grip closely surrounds the corresponding handle bar tube in a tight push fit, the inner surface of the hand grip being meshed while the outer surface of the handle bar tube is knurled, such that the said surfaces come into tight contractual engagement with each other, to restrain any relative rotational and linear movements between the said surfaces.

2. A handle bar assembly for a motor vehicle substantially as herein described with reference to, and as illustrated in, the accompanying drawings.
