, Description:TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present subject matter relates generally to a motor vehicle. More particularly but not specifically, the present invention relates to a handle bar assembly for a motor vehicle.
BACKGROUND
[0002] Over the past few years, the public transport means becomes predominant means which include auto rickshaws or three wheeled vehicles which is especially in developing countries is one of the chief modes of transport. It is often observed that there is more number of auto rickshaws on the road than personal and public transport vehicles. So a commuter sees a lot of vehicle like auto rickshaws while commuting to his workplace. The typical three wheeler are is operated day and night on roads and such, increasing number of vehicles on road led to many innovations improving the comfort and safety of vehicle and also the safety of passengers in public transport is always a big challenge for automobile manufacturers as the increased safety features requires lot of controls and indication which is to be accommodated within defined space. Generally, in the three wheeler there is one front wheel and two wheels at rear, where the front wheel connected to the vehicle using steering tube assembly which is connected to the handle bar assembly. Generally, in three wheeler display member and various switches are placed on dashboard but in known art instrument clusters are mounted on handle bar in order to address the issue of space constraints, but because of increasing number of features the size of display member increasing which make it impossible to have control within ergonomic reach of the user or driver. Also there is a need to incorporate many indicative displays in speedometer area which makes the size of the display member vary large and also results in the cast handle bar size being made substantially bigger.
[0003] Placement of display member where display face is horizontal is known in art but it has poor visibility and the dials are not clearly seen when viewed from a normal driving position of the user. The condition become worse in afternoon when speedometer is positioned as described above because of undesirable glare and reflection which causes discomfort while viewing the plurality of features, Further, In the know art the cables such as speedometer cable, clutch cable, throttle cable and gear shift cables are all untidily going out of the handle bar which is typically exposed and can be seen from the outside of the vehicle leading to poor aesthetics looks.
[0004] Generally, a long-felt need in the three wheeler’s instrument cluster vision is to reduce the amount of time spent gathering information of the parameter of running vehicle and to focus on condition around the three wheeled vehicle in order to safely carry out a vehicle maneuver, such as a turn or a lane change. It has been known that more time spent on gathering information with conventional instrument cluster mounting. This typically requires viewing instrument cluster turning the head and body to check blind spots, and double-checking the vehicle parameters prior to executing the maneuver. Some improvement has been obtained by adjusting the observed field of windshield of the vehicle. However, this is achieved by increasing size of windshield which makes driver aware of conditions to the side of the vehicle even more difficult as in day light more sunlight will come which leads to more reflection and heat inside the three wheelers. In known arts the plurality of features shown in dashboard so one difficulty with proposed systems has been that they present a large amount of visual information in a manner which is difficult to comprehend. This difficulty arises from many factors. In order to significantly reduce blind spots plurality of features is given in dashboard which may further confuse the driver as to whether correct parameter is seen or not even difficult to access and also makes it ergonomically inferior and causes discomfort to the user and in severe cases this may leads to negligence on the part of user which can result into accidents.
[0005] So the challenge is not only to shown all features effectively, ergonomically in one place but to make these features visible, uncluttered, conspicuous without leading to distraction and confusion.
[0006] A three wheeled vehicle is used for commuting purposes in developing countries generally requires regular servicing and specially in three wheelers display member is prone to malfunctioning because of weather conditions such as heavy rainfall, heat due to the sunlight etc., Since no doors are provided in the driver/user compartment. The water use to come in the handle bar assembly during heavy rainfall and because of conventional designed handle bar where display face of display member is horizontal i.e. parallel to ground, this lets water to stay/stagnate there for long time leading to durability and reliability failures. Exposure to direct sunlight passing through windshield which is incident on display members, leads to rise in temperature of the display member and additionally the distant between the windshield and display member unit being less aggravates the failure. The display member is generally mounted in a position to keep the display face of the display member horizontal owing to which electrical or electronic parts are prone to malfunctioning, Further the serviceability of the display member require lot of time since it necessitates disassembly of whole handle bar unit and that includes detaching of the display member from the mounted position which leads to more time and cost.
[0007] In view of above drawbacks, there is a need for a stable structure of the handle bar assembly for a three wheeled vehicle which overcomes all the afore mentioned problems and other problems known in the art.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[00016] Various features and embodiments of the present invention here will be discernible from the following further description thereof, set out hereunder. According to an embodiment, three wheels is described here to operate a vehicle. Wherein the pair of wheels is installed in a rear and one front wheel to steer the vehicle typically called as auto-rickshaw. It is pertinent to note that the pair of wheels may be mounted in three wheeled vehicles in different arrangements. However, in the ensuing description, such pair of wheels is disposed at extreme ends of the three wheeled vehicle. It is contemplated that the concepts of the present invention may be applied to other types of vehicles and other types of casting methods within the spirit and scope of this invention. Further "front" and "rear", and "left" and "right" referred to in the ensuing description of the illustrated embodiment refer to front and rear, and left and right directions as seen from a rear portion of the vehicle and looking forward. The detailed explanation of the constitution of parts other than the present invention which constitutes an essential part has been omitted at suitable places.
[00017] Typically, in the vehicle such as a two or three wheeled vehicle, display member is located in front side of the said vehicle. Conventionally, the display member comprises an encoding apparatus for generating pulses as a function of the distance a vehicle is moved, a calibrating apparatus and an indicating circuit means for visually indicating the parameters like distance, speed of the movement etc. So for vehicle manufactures it is important to add many features in the vehicle with an objective of providing critical information to the user like low fuel indication, safe riding speed, safe engine rpm etc. as well as any possible diagnostic information. As an additional objective, the display cluster is also intended to be made attractive and appealing. However, for effective communication of information, the user generally desires to know more about the feature of the vehicle especially in running conditions. To share or to display all information related to the feature of the vehicle through a single display member is a herculean task for vehicle manufactures as well as it can lead to complexity due to overload of information bring presented to the user leading to discomfort, confusion and irritation. Further, there exists a challenge to provide maximum useful information with minimum cluttering of the display cluster as well as minimum size of the cluster considering space available as well as the cost impact.
[00018] The above-mentioned problem related to the display member is very much prevalent in modern era where the vehicle manufactures want to develop the vehicle with more features, more options at one place. Therefore, there is a high need to develop a display member for displaying all the features of the vehicle on single display member. In order to meet this requirement, the size of the display member increases and it became difficult to accommodate big size display member within the conventional designed handle bars and headlamp assembly of the vehicle.
[00019] Further the safety features and infotainment system having plurality of features, controls and switches which are placed apart from the ergonomic reach of the user, and additionally conventionally designed handle bar require more time for servicing since the whole handle bar assembly is to be disassembled before servicing, even in cases of malfunction of the display member the whole handle bar assembly is to be disassembled which leads to the user discomfort as it requires more time and cost.
[00020] The challenge for the automobile players is not only to have all features in one place and within best ergonomic reach but also to have display plurality of features in the best visual cone position of the user. In general state-of-art, the research is underway to solve the above-said problems by developing the handle bar which are having less weight and better serviceability and requires less assembly time. But to facilitate optimum positioning of the display member to suit height of the user the mounting of display member and design of cast handle bar plays a important role. In know arts, the display member mounted on handle bar where display face of the display member is in direction parallel to the ground, so this is inconvenient for the user as display panel is out of the vision zone of the user and at such angle which specially during afternoon leads to undesirable glare and reflection causes discomfort while viewing the plurality of features,
[00021] Further as the space between windshield and the handle bar is very less which make display members prone to malfunctioning because of direct sunlight coming from the windshield when the display member is placed in conventional position like on dashboards and on handle bar. Even in heavy rainfall conditions water may come inside the handle bar assembly since the three wheeler generally without any doors which can lead to malfunctioning of many other electrical switches and electronic components mounted on the handle bar.
[00022] So, the casting of handle bar and cover member is very crucial to ensure the best user comfort because handle bar is the connecting member and accommodates many electrical switches and display members. The conventional design of handle bars having negative drafts leads to more cost and manufacturing time. In the known art especially in four wheeled vehicles, the rider is disposed substantially offset from the mid plane of the vehicle & is a significantly reclining bucket seated condition. The dashboard of the vehicle presents a much larger area to dispose multiple information & at user convenience. However, all these feature ae luxuriously costly & not feasible for a low cost transport three wheeled vehicle. Additionally, the rider in a three wheeled vehicle is centrally disposed across the track width in a substantially upright seated position to enable distinct view of the road surface & with purpose of concentrating on the road owing to long term, continuous usage. Additionally, to keep cost low, such vehicle is typically enabled with a steering handle or simple steering wheel which collectively makes it difficult to provision a high cost, large size display cluster or any dashboard. However, the need for communication & display of essential information exists. Unlike in a four wheeled vehicle or a two wheeled vehicle, the number of control switches to be provided to the user of such a multi-track three wheeled transport vehicle pose a different challenge to minimize the physical fatigue of the arms of the rider, mental fatigue of information overload while still having adequate information & access to control systems & switches. In a four wheeled vehicle, while the user is ergonomically positioned in a relatively relaxed position, access to various control switched or interfaces can be done by releasing either of the hand from the steering wheel for a small moment of time. For a two wheeled vehicle, the required information to be displayed is relatively less or less fatiguing since the usage of the vehicle is predominantly in intervals of time with breaks. The two wheeled vehicle is also not taxed with the task of changing gears with the hand while activating the clutch in addition to driving for prolonged continuous travel. Typically for a motorcycle type vehicle, the clutch actuation is with the foot thereby reducing the stress & fatigue of the arms of the rider. As per an consideration, it will also be a challenge to provision a handle lever clutch operated two wheeler to minimize the physical & mental fatigue for effective communication of information & access of control switches. Therefore, there is a need to develop a handle bar assembly which overcomes all of the above problems and provide best visual cone to the user for comfortable and ergonomic display, require less service time, low cost, enables easy assembly and manufacturing including machining.
[00023] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a handle bar assembly for the vehicle, which is capable of overcoming the above-mentioned problems and other ancillary problems relevant to the handle bar assembly.
[00024] It is an object of the invention to provide the display member in best conical view of the user and avoiding undesirable glare and reflection.
[00025] It is another object of the invention to provide the handle bar cast with positive draft which ensures ease of manufacturing and less machining.
[00026] It is object of the invention to provide handle bar assembly with better serviceability and less weight.
[00027] It is another object of the invention to provide the handle bar assembly which can accommodate the different size of the display member.
[00028] It is an object of the invention to provide the handle bar assembly which is asethically appealing to the user and naked wires or cables are not visible from outside.
[00029] The present subject matter relates to the handle bar assembly is a three part assembly comprises a handle bar, a cover member, and a display member wherein the handle bar extending in a direction perpendicular to the vehicle travel direction and having switch assemblies disposed on both the ends such that it comes within the range of the user seated centrally in a substantially upright position. The handle bar having a throttle tube guided through one side and actuating means on the other side. The actuating means includes brake, clutch. The handle grip disposed at the ends of the handle bar and a cultch lever is mounted ergonomically at a position proximate to the handle grip on the handle bar, a cover member is detachably secured to the handle bar, a cover handle bar is provided below the handle bar to cover exposed wires. The display member is configured in handle bar such that the display surface of the display member is configured to pass through a Plane B making an angle ?A with a Plane C where the plane C is passing through the adjoining area of the cover member and the tapered area provided on handle bar in longitudinal direction (F-R), such that the Plane C passing through the lower most end of the adjoining area (encircled and labeled as D) formed by mated halves of cover member and handle bar when viewed from the side direction of the vehicle.
[00030] The plane B makes an angle ?B with the axis (A-A’). So the interrelation between ?A and ?B ensures the display member is coming within ?c range which is avoiding glare or reflection during afternoon and coming within best conical view of the user.
[00031] It is advantage of the present subject matter that the handle bar assembly is compact in shape with light weight and high strength and is implementable in any vehicle like scooter, motorcycle, a three-wheeler, or a multi-wheeler.
[00032] It is also another advantage of the present subject matter as the handle bar assembly gives easier and ergonomic access to more user controls.
[00033] It is another advantage of present subject matter that the display member having plurality of features positioned in best visual cone of the user and by avoiding any glare or reflection especially during afternoon.
[00034] The aforesaid and other advantages of the present subject matter would be described in greater detail in conjunction with the figures in the following description.
[00035] Figure. 1 illustrates a side perspective view of an exemplary three-wheeled vehicle (100) (hereinafter ‘vehicle’), in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. The vehicle has a front cowl (105) supporting a windscreen (102). The lower portion of the front cowl (105) is connected to a front wheel (104) with a wheel cover (103) disposed in between by using steering tube assembly. A handle bar assembly (114) is present behind the front cowl (105) which is used to operate the said vehicle (100). In this view, a steering tube assembly (not shown) is disposed along the steering axis of the vehicle (100). Further, as per one embodiment, the vehicle (100) is divided into two compartments along the line X-X’; a driver/user compartment (D) having a driver/user’s seat assembly (111) and a passenger compartment (P) having at least one passenger seat assembly (113). A rear cabin (106) along with the passenger compartment (P) of the vehicle (100) is supported on a pair of rear wheels (107) located on either side of the longitudinal axis (YY) of the vehicle 100.
[00036] Further in Figure.1, as per one embodiment, the vehicle (100) comprises a chassis frame structure (not shown), extending from a front portion (F) to a rear portion (R) along the vehicle longitudinal axis (YY). The chassis frame structure includes a head tube (400) (shown in Figure 4) and a main tube assembly (not shown) extending rearward from the head tube (shown in Figure 4). The front cowl (105) is positioned in the anterior portion of the head tube. A floorboard (108) is extending from the bottom portion of the front cowl (105) to the rearward direction of the vehicle (100), supported by the main frame assembly. The rear suspension includes a spring and a shock absorber unit (109) connected to the chassis frame structure. A hydraulic braking system is attached to the front wheel (104) and said pair of rear wheels (107). A hood (101) connects a top portion of the front cowl (105) and a top portion of the body panel (110). Referring to one embodiment of the present invention, a pair of headlamp assemblies (112L), (112R) including a left headlamp assembly (112L) and a right headlamp assembly (112R) (not shown) is disposed on at least a portion of the front cowl (105) of the vehicle (100).
[00037] Figure 2 illustrates the rear side view of the handle bar assembly (114), wherein handle bar cover (207) is extending in direction perpendicular to the direction of the vehicle travel. The handle bar cover (207) is having mounting provisions where the switches are disposed on the both ends of the handle bar cover (207) and placed apart such that it comes within the reach of the user. The handle grip (203) disposed at the both the ends of the handle bar cover (207), the clutch lever (202) is disposed on the left hand side of the user and mounted at a position proximate to the handle grip (203), Further as viewed from the rear end the handle bar cover (207) having plurality of switches and controls. The right side of the handle bar assembly (114) having wiper switch (205d), horn switch (205f) and self-start switch (205e). The wiper switch (205d) controls the wipers, provided ahead of the windshield to ensure clear vision during rainfall to the user. The self-start and stop switch (205e) is provided to start the vehicle (100) using single button without manually cranking the engine. The horn switch (205f) is provided to blow horn in traffic or emergency conditions or as per the need of the user. Further the left hand side of the handle bar assembly (114) is configured with an indicator switch (205a), parking switch (205b), and head lamp switch (205c). The turn signal indicator switch (205a) is provided to indicate the oncoming traffic that user intended to take turn or it can be used while overtaking or giving side to the other vehicles. The parking switch (205b) is provided to give signal about road side assistance or while parking of the vehicle (100). The parking switch (205b) makes all indicators to glow. The head lamp switch (205c) is provided to control the head lamps provided on the front cowl (105). The handle bar cover (207) is the connecting member as throttle tube (not shown) is guided from one side and gear shift tube (not shown) from the other side. The handle bar cover (207) is casted such as that it can ease the operation of gear shifting and same time protect the housed member like instrument clusters, switches etc. from any sudden impact from outside. The handle grip (203, 204) are provided on the both the ends and ergonomically designed which is elliptical in shape providing better grip to the user while driving. The cover handle (206) is provided to cover the many cables/ wires which are guided through the handle bar cover (207) like throttle cable, connecting wires for electrical switches etc. The said cover handle (206) is provided below the handle bar cover (207) detachably secured to at least one end of said handle bar cover (207). A display member (201) to show plurality of features is ergonomically accommodated in the handle bar cover (207). The display member (201) includes Liquid crystal display unit.
[00038] Figure 3 illustrates the exploded view of the handle bar assembly (114). The display member (201) is accommodated in the cavity area of irregular pentagon shape when viewed from the top of handle bar cover (207). The handle bar cover (207) having tapered area in rear to front (R-F) direction of the vehicle (100) and the handle bar cover (207) is converging conically in longitudinal direction when viewed from the side of the vehicle (100). The display member (201) used to display plurality of features is accommodated in the handle bar cover (207) using mounting bracket (303). The display member (201) is covered by the cover member (302). So it is a three-part assembly where the cover member (302) is placed on the top of the handle bar cover (207) and the cover handle (206) is below the handle bar cover (207). The handle bar cover (207) having a large cavity area which is pentagon in shape when viewed from the top of the vehicle (100) to accommodate various size of display member (201). Further the switch assemblies (301a, 301b) having plurality of switches which is operably disposed on the both the ends of the handle bar cover (207). The mating areas of both handle bar cover (207) and cover member (302) ensures better strength and rigidity and at the same time light weight with better drivability to the user. The rigidity is ensured because of inner (not shown) and outer layer (not shown) of the cover member (302) and large cross section of handle bar cover (207) to withstand at large torsional loads.
[00039] Figure 4 illustrates the left side cut section view of the vehicle (100), wherein a steering tube assembly rotatable around axis (A-A’) connected to the head tube (400). The steering tube assembly connects the front wheel (104) with the handle bar assembly (114). Generally, the axis (A-A’) known as steering axis. The angle made by the axis (A-A’) with the vertical line passing through the center of the wheel is ranging from 15 to 25 degrees. The angular range between the axis (A-A’) and vertical line passing through the center of the wheel may vary as per the use and type of the vehicle (100). Further a plane B is passing from the top of the display member (201) which is making an angle ?A with the Plane C. The plane C is passing from the adjoining area of the cover member (302) and the handle bar cover (207) in the longitudinal direction such that it passes from the lower most end of the adjoining area when viewed from the side direction of the vehicle (100) i.e. passing from nose (as encircled and labeled as D) formed from two mated halves of cover member (302) and handle bar cover (207). The plane B makes an angle ?B with the axis (A-A’) where the angle ?B lies in the range of 110 degree to 120 degree and angle ?A lies in the range of 55 degree to 65 degree. Here the mounting of the display member (201) with reference to the handle bar cover (207) design plays a vital role, as evident from the angular relation of ?A and. ?B So If an change in angle ?B carried out then angle ?A will automatically change.
[00040] The relation between ?A and ?B establishes the important interconnection between the mounting of the display member (201) and the handle bar cover (207). So any change in plane C from existing range will severely affect the mounted position of the display member (201) which in turn affects the display.
[00041] Figure 5 illustrates a left side view of an exemplary motor vehicle typically a three-wheeled vehicle with driver sitting in driver compartment (D), in accordance with an embodiment of the present subject matter; the display member (201) is mounted on the handle bar cover (207). The human eyes need to be turned to focus on objects outside the foveal area. The eyes normally turn by about 30 degrees before the head is turned, which can comfortably give a further vision angle ?C. The ?C is in range of 45 degrees view to either side. The ?c is formed between line of sight (LS) and maximum downward direction (Md). The maximum downward direction (Md) is w.r.t to eye movement as visual cone of human eye is complex; it is limited by many factors including anatomical and optical factors. Further the driver has to concentrate on direct view that is on road. So glancing away from the road for a short period is possible but not for a long time. The handle bar cover (207), display member (201) and its specific shape are the three determining factor for the view. As the plane B makes an angle ?B with the axis (A-A’) where the angle ?B lies in the range of 110 degree to 120 degree which makes display member (201) to come within ?C degree range below that horizontal eye line of driver with smallest sitting eye height so that driver does not require a much head and eye turn to have a look. The shape of cover member (302) configured to have side walls ensure better rigidity and protection from direct sunlight.
[00042] Figure 6(a) illustrates the handle bar assembly (114) in exploded and assembled view where the switch assembly (301a, 301b) is omitted from the handle bar assembly (114). The tapered area (encircled area and labeled as E) provided on the handle bar cover (207) in rear to front of the vehicle (100) ensures the sufficient service area for the display member (201). The cover member (302) is irregular pentagon in shape extending obliquely in downward direction around the circumference such that to make a matching profile with handle bar cover (207). When viewed from the front direction (F-R) the cover member (302) is conical in shape. The figure further clearly illustrates the electrical connection where the cover member (302) is removed, so during the service of the vehicle (100) the cover member (302) is to be removed and the display member (201) can be easily serviced if any malfunctioning happens by keeping the display member (201) in mounted position. This ensures less service time. Moreover, the present subject matter also ensures the positive draft while manufacturing of the handle bar cover (207). The handle bar cover (207) structure/ cover leads to the less material as compare to conventional design because the tapered area (encircled in the figure) is covered by the cover member (302) profile which is made of plastic. Generally, the material used for the handle bar cover (207) is metal like aluminum or other light weight alloys which is generally known in the art.
[00043] Figure 6 (b) shows the assembled view of handle bar assembly (114) The assembled profile provides the water proof handle assembly (114) as the profile of both the handle bar cover (207) and cover member (302) ensures snap fit type assembly.
[00044] The present subject matter according to present embodiment ensures the no additional machining to maintain the mating dimensions due to positive draft.
[00045] The present subject matter according to present embodiment ensures the display member (201) mounted such that it comes within best conical view of the user and causes no undesirable glare or reflection of sunlight specially during afternoon.
[00046] Moreover, the present subject matter according to present embodiment provide the tapered area on the handle bar cover (207) downwardly in rear to front direction of the vehicle when viewed from the side thereby improving the service area which is formed between Plane B and Plane C.
[00047] The present subject matter according to present embodiment provides the handle bar assembly (114) which can accommodate various size of the display member (201), where only cover member is to be changed.
[00048] The present subject matter according to present embodiment ensures the water proof handle bar assembly (114) as the three wheeler having no doors in driver/user compartment (D) hence the electrical and electronic devices are prone to the malfunctioning due to water, hence the present handle bar assembly (114) ensures the water will not stay on the handle bar cover (207) and display member (201) hence the display member (201) is made more inclined with respect to the rest of the handle bar assembly (114).
[00049] The present subject matter according to present embodiment where handle bar assembly (114) ensures reduced amount of time spent on gathering information of the parameter of running vehicle and to focus on condition around the three wheeled vehicle in order to safely carry out a vehicle maneuver as the display member (201) coming within best conical view of the driver i.e Line of sight (Ls) and maximum downward direction (Md).
[00050] The present subject matter according to present embodiment where handle bar assembly (114) ensures less fatigue to the driver as movement of head is reduced to view the parameters and driver can concentrate on direct view that is on road.
[00051] Furthermore, the present subject matter according to present embodiment provide aesthically appealing handle bar assembly because there are no exposed wires or cables are visible from outside of the vehicle.
[00052] While preferred embodiments of the present subject matter have been described above, it is to be understood that variations and modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing the scope and spirit of the present subject matter like In an embodiment, the handle bar assembly can accommodates different size of display member which is ranging from large size to small size, with various features include speed, distance, map, time, battery usage, fuel usage, side-stand status, lighting status, vehicle control unit status, and many electrical and electronic components working status. Further the display member orientation can be adjusted using adjustable means which can be mechanical means or electronics where adjustable functioning performed by the user manually or it can be done automatically. Further the shape of the handle bar cover is not limited to any specific profile.
